Product Description
Between the world wars, Paris welcomed not only a numberof glamorous American expatriates, including Josephine Baker andF. Scott Fitzgerald, but also a dynamic musical style emerging in theUnited States: jazz. Roaring through cabarets, music halls, and danceclubs, the upbeat, syncopated rhythms of jazz soon added to the allureof Paris as a center of international nightlife and cutting-edgemodern culture. In Making Jazz French, Jeffrey H. Jackson examines notonly how and why jazz became so widely performed in Paris during the1920s and 1930s but also why it was so controversial.

Drawing on memoirs, press accounts, and cultural criticism, Jacksonuses the history of jazz in Paris to illuminate the challengesconfounding French national identity during the interwar years. As heexplains, many French people initially regarded jazz as alien becauseof its associations with America and Africa. Some reveled in itsexplosive energy and the exoticism of its racial connotations, whileothers saw it as a dangerous reversal of France’s most cherishednotions of "civilization." At the same time, many French musicians, though not threatened by jazz as a musical style, feared their jobswould vanish with the arrival of American performers. By the 1930s,however, a core group of French fans, critics, and musicians hadincorporated jazz into the French entertainment tradition. Today it isan integral part of Parisian musical performance. In showing how jazzbecame French, Jackson reveals some of the ways a musical form createdin the United States became an international phenomenon andacquired new meanings unique to the places where it was heard andperformed. ... The only complaint I had was the condition of the book. It was labeled as in "Good" condition but there was writing all over the spine and in the pages, and the book was thoroughly worn. Other than that, I'm happy with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Improv Book for Jazz Saxophone
This is really a good book on jazz improvisation for saxophone. The book starts out with a brief introduction of chords and their chord symbols. All of the scales and patterns described in the book are written out in all of the keys except for the enharmonically spelled keys.A big plus for this book is that there is a section that describes how to play the special effects sound on the saxophone, like microtonics, growls, harmonics, etc.It gives specific fingerings for them. Now, there may be additional fingerings. It's just that I've seen no other sax book describe these. This book clearly illustrates the styles of some of our most famous saxophone players including Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Jr. Walker to name a few.I think this helps in understanding what we are hearing when we hear their music. The author also describes how to perform the chordal and scalar passages and sound musical by using different types of articulations. He also talks about the challenges of practicing and learning improvisation of which I think is important to talk about.Because sometimes as a musicians we need motivation as to why we are practicing everyday when we don't see immediate results. It's reality to understand that it takes months of practicing before one can get a real handle on certain musical expressions.
Each chapter has a new style of improvisation with music pattern. This book is not an end all to improvisation but is certainly a good start for any sax player who wants to improve his or her improvisational skills. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must
If only for the music. This collection, book and cd contains recipes and music in the french style, lively and lovely. For those of you who love good food and great music, here you will find both. The recipes are in great french fashion, ie: Coq au Vin, Lentils with ham, Soft boiled eggs with Morels, Provencal Garlic Soup and the desserts here are as rich as the food offerings. The music is oh so lovely, not a sour note in the lot. If you enjoy cooking and eating, especially french food, you can now do so with fabulous, jazzy yet gentle music to match. Sharon O' Connor has really done her research.

I give it a four because I fell the content of the book could have been expanded upon. For what this book costs, I would wait for a better deal.

Overall, a job beautifully executed. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Lauded Cookbook I Own
First, the CD:Everyone loves it.It's fantastic atmosphere music. But the book-- A miraculous compilation. She begins by explaining bistro origins and culture in Paris, then focuses on one of the many Parisian bistros covered in the book-- its story, a walk around the neighborhood, how to find it.Then a few of their star recipes. This book boils down centuries of combined knowledge of the cooking-est culture in the world.

Everything I've tried has been nothing short of an unqualified triumph. You'll understand when the people you invite over begin using every superlative in their arsenal to describe not just what they are tasting, but what they are feeling.I'm somewhat of a 5-star restaurant hopper, so I've got a basis for comparison.

And the Coq au Vin-- quite possibly the best thing anyone has ever eaten.Anyone.Ever.Honest to God, I nearly cried. It's Beethoven's 7th symphony. It's Citizen Kane.It could bring about world peace.Do not die without having eaten this dish.Is that emphatic enough?

To sum up-- the CD is great, the hisotories are interesting, the illustrations are helpful, the content is educational, and the recipies are divine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent escape from the everyday ho-hum
My fiancee and I love to travel and have been to Paris several times; however, we haven't been able to make any trips for a long time because of health and financial issues. I received this book as a gift and fell in love with it right away. The recipes are a perfect cross-section of bistro cuisine, and the music is indeed relaxing. For us, this is a great way to get our "Paris fix" until we're able to travel again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sucess in the kitchen!
I have had great sucess with many of the recipes here. The recipes are easy to follow, the photos of the finished dish are inspiring, and the result is very tasty! There is just a step or two in these recipes that really elevate these dishes. The best Coq a vin and cauliflower gratin I have ever tasted! I look forward to trying the desserts next. The accompanying CD was a fun surprise...It is actually very pleasant to listen to when cooking: upbeat but not too loud, all rather "hummable" and fun. This cookbook and CD is perfect for a relaxing Sunday afternoon preparing a special Sunday dinner.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for anyfrancophile
Now a confirmed francophile after honeymooning in Paris, my daughter is delighted with this collection of authentic bistro recipes and music. With the CD and recipes, easy enough even for her novice cooking skills, she can re-create the Parisian mood at home while entertaining family and friends. The only thing lacking are more photographs ofthe prepared recipes as food is to be savored by our mouth, nose and eyes. ... Product Description
In this major update of the acclaimed and award-winning jazz history, Alyn Shipton challenges many of the assumptions that surround the birth and growth of jazz music. How was it that it took off all over the United States early in the 20th century, despite the accepted wisdom that everything began in New Orleans? Shipton also re-evaluates the transition from swing to be-bop, asking just how political this supposed modern jazz revolution actually was. He makes the case for jazz as a truly international music from its earliest days, charting significant developments outside the USA from the 1920s onwards. All the great names in jazz history are here, from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis and from Sidney Bechet to Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. But unlike those historians who call a halt with the death of Coltrane in 1967, Shipton continues the story with the major trends in jazz over the last 40 years: free jazz, jazz rock, world music influences, and the re-emergence of the popular jazz singer. This new edition brings the book completely up-to-date, including such names as John Medeski, Diana Krall, Django Bates, and Matthias Ruegg. There are also important new sections on Latin Jazz, and the repertory movement. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Recomendo
Outra noite estava eu dormindo e lendo o imenso livro A New History Of Jazz, de Alyn Shipton. Olhei desconfiado: piano solo?

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially recommended for college library and music history shelves.
Now in a newly revised and updated edition, A New History of Jazz is the award-winning chronicle of the evolution of this widely beloved form of music, as told by music author, publisher, editor, and critic Alyn Shipton. From the precursors to the first jazz tunes, to variations regional styles, to the "big picture" of the jazz scene that is so easily lost amid tracing its popularity in underground clubs, to the unique and colorful individuals who espoused jazz, to the migration of jazz worldwide, A New History of Jazz strives above all to be comprehensive in its chronicling. Written in a highly detailed yet accessible tone, A New History of Jazz will prove as invaluable to curious lay readers and music scholars alike. Especially recommended for college library and music history shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shipton is a master!
Alyn Shipton knows more about the history of jazz than any human on the face of the planet, and this book displays his skills at their finest.Shipton is a masterful writer and this belongs on the shelf of all who consider themselves an afficionado.Buy two copies and give one to a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Authoritative
Jazz has always been a bit of a mystery for me, and only in the past few months have I made a (thus far rewarding) attempt to really understand it. I have read a couple of more basic introductions (the NPR Guide, the Complete Idiot's Guide) and found Shipton's book to be very well written and researched. It provides a great background, not only on the music, but also on the environment that created jazz.He takes pleasure in debunking some of the myths that have grown up around the music (sometimes too much pleasure), but his arguments are always backed up with research. While giving ample coverage to the giants of jazz, he also introduces the reader to many other figures who have shaped the music.Shipton is opinionated, but it always clear where he is stating an opinion. All in all, I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking to deepen their understanding and curiosity about jazz. The only real shortcoming is that the book only has a small section of photographs.I am now reading the Ken Burns book, and while I'm not ready to offer a judgment on the overall text, the pictures are certainly great--I get to see many of the people and places Shipton refers to in this very good book. ... Product Description
In jazz circles, players and listeners with "big ears" hear and engage complexity in the moment, as it unfolds. Taking gender as part of the intricate, unpredictable action in jazz culture, this interdisciplinary collection explores the terrain opened up by listening, with big ears, for gender in jazz. Essays range from a reflection on the female boogie-woogie pianists who played at New York's Café Society during the 1930s and 1940s to an interpretation of representations of the jazzman in Dorothy Baker's 1938 novel, Young Man with a Horn, and Michael Curtiz's 1952 film adaptation. Taken together, the essays enrich the field of jazz studies by showing how gender dynamics have shaped the production, reception, and criticism of jazz culture.

Scholars of music, ethnomusicology, American studies, literature, anthropology, and cultural studies approach the question of gender in jazz from multiple perspectives. One contributor scrutinizes the tendency of jazz historiography to treat singing as subordinate to the predominantly male domain of instrumental music, while another examines pianist and composer George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept as a critique of mid-twentieth-century discourses of embodiment, madness, and black masculinity. Other essays include an exploration of performances of "female hysteria" by Les Diaboliques, a feminist improvising trio; an examination of BBC radio broadcasts of Ivy Benson and her Ladies' Dance Orchestra during World War II; and a reflection by Ingrid Monson on her doubly inappropriate position as a female trumpet player and a white jazz musician and scholar. By incorporating gender analysis into jazz studies, Big Ears transforms ideas of who counts as a subject of study and even of what counts as jazz.

Somehow they managed to simplify the arrangements so that they still sound professional, but not so tricky that onlya gifted few can play them. I have many sheet music transcriptions of Bill Evan, Chick Corea, Mehegan jazz studies, etc that I purchased over the years, but most are so technically challenging that you can forget about getting in a relaxed groove, so I ended up just playing some playable classical sheet music from time to time to keep in practice. 3-0 out of 5 stars Of limited use
If you have no other Jazz sheet music this is worth buying at the right price. It covers the basic harmony you need to know and it covers some of the more common Jazz styles such as block chord, stride etc. However it is noteably poor in its discussion of improvisation. There is none! Thats pretty poor for a book on Jazz.

It also only only covers 'modern voicings' and 'scales and modes' in the last few pages of the book. This book was published in 1980 originally, and what in the authors eyes might have been seen as minority stylings then, are now the standard way modern Jazz Pianists play. BTW I'm not running down old-style Jazz Piano - I love stride Piano. But the truth these days is that most Jazz Pianists now continue in the tradition of Bill Evans/Keith Jarrett/Herbie Hancock etc.

I could certainly recommend this to a relative beginner, but for the more experienced musician there are many more interesting and informative books to get.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best and not a Hanon type of book
This is not a bad book, there are some good exercises, not all of them but there are few useful ones. But it should be said that the title offers something the book is not exactly. Yes, the book is a Book on Technique, with etudes and exercises on specific technical aspects, but it is not conceived as a Hanon type (which, in my opinion is not necessarily a bad thing). The problem with this book is that even though it is not a bad book, there are other books with better exercises, a more progressive selection of material and in some cases with a greater develop and explanations about the concepts to work at and its applications. If you are looking for a modern Hannon on Jazz try the other Jazz Hannon by Petter Deneff (more on the Hannon style: repetitive patterns, but less musical examples than this one), but even better try Oscar Peterson's book on jazz etudes or Dan Haerle's books. Finally, for more than a book on technique I will also recommend the Alfred's Jazz Keyboards Series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete jazz exercise lacks rhythm application
This was probably my first jazz piano book when I first bought it 6 years ago. Honestly, it did not teach me much about jazz but the exercise help me a lot in term of playing major 7th and minor 7th chords at that time. The book did not emphasis much about rhythm, as many jazz pianist would tell you a big difference between classical and jazz music is the rhythm. A swing feel is not easily explained to many traditional classical pianist. This book did not dwell on that at all. However, after knowing what a swing feel is, this book would be a practical exercise book. I would suggest to play the example in the book with a swing feel instead of a steady rhythm like written. Honestly it is a breakthrough once I understand to apply the exercise in jazz rhythm.
The book is very useful in explaning the many sub-genres of jazz. You will know what a bebop, a walking bass, a swing base, and others after going through the exercise. You will also be able to create opened and closed voicing after this. It does take an intermediate jazz pianist to understand the application process of this exercise.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
it's a good book for those who want to learn the basics of the Jazz Music.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hanon are great exercises
The Hanon are great exercises, but it's important to do a variety of exercises. Going through 50 Hanon Exercises each day may be a little overkill and somewhat unbalanced, especially if you're playing them all at the same tempo.

I couldn't play at all unless I warmed up for 45 minutes. What I learned was, in addition to "exercises" it's important to play some tunes...

Try some of these:
-Hanon 1st exercise, all keys quarter note 100
-All Major scales, 4 octaves, various tempi

-Apreggios - same
-Pick one or two a day of the following:
Brahms 51 exercises
Pischna
Schmitt Preparatory Exercises
Bach Two Part Inventions
Chopin Etudes, Waltzes (anything really)
Scott Joplin rags
Blues - in various keys
Tunes you'd play on gigs in different keys each day

just mix it up and don't spend more time on exercises than you do playing tunes. ... Read more

Product Description

Subversive Sounds probes New Orleans’s history, uncovering a web of racial interconnections and animosities that was instrumental to the creation of a vital American art form—jazz. Drawing on oral histories, police reports, newspaper accounts, and vintage recordings, Charles Hersch brings to vivid life the neighborhoods and nightspots where jazz was born.

This volume shows how musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton, Nick La Rocca, and Louis Armstrong negotiated New Orleans’s complex racial rules to pursue their craft and how, in order to widen their audiences, they became fluent in a variety of musical traditions from diverse ethnic sources. These encounters with other music and races subverted their own racial identities and changed the way they played—a musical miscegenation that, in the shadow of Jim Crow, undermined the pursuit of racial purity and indelibly transformed American culture.

“More than timely . . . Hersch orchestrates voices of musicians on both sides of the racial divide in underscoring how porous the music made the boundaries of race and class.”—New Orleans Times-Picayune

Product Description

The scientific approach of this book transcends the limits of art literature in that it also develops geometric theories of gestures and distributed identities, also known as swarm intelligence.

We exemplify this approach in the framework of free jazz, which is a prototypical creative and collaborative art form. Leader artists such as John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, and Archie Shepp are presented in their strongest works and theories. A CD with new recordings of the group Tetrade (Jeff Kaiser on trumpet, Guerino Mazzola on piano, Sirone on bass, Heinz Geisser on percussion) is included.

The pillars of our theory of collaboration are built from psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s flow, physicist Gilles Châtelet’s gestures, and computer scientist Bill Wulf's collaboratories.

For Introduction to Jazz courses. Jazz: An American Journey places jazz music within its rich historical and cultural context. The book explains how and why jazz evolved as it did, as it emphasizes chronology, historical cause and effect, and the interactions between music and American history and culture. Presented from the point of view of the original participants (musicians, critics and audiences), the book focuses on the music with fifty-five recorded examples that are accompanied by a listening chart, commentary and analysis, all to provide a more vivid setting for jazz grounded in the time, place and worldview of its creators. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars What happened to the CD?
I was under the impression (from the detailed ad) when I ordered this textbook for my daughter that the CD was included. In fact, I made sure of it because the class would be difficult for her otherwise. But, no CD came with the book. My daughter was forced to rely on a classmate to burn a copy for her. ... Read more

Mr. Mancuso has really integrated visualls into music through his teachingand lectures... His book is a reflection of his style. Not one book hasmore pictures (a lot rare) of artists and composers to show how music hasgrown in the last 100 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
It is the most thorough accessment of American Popular Music I have seen.Mancuso's theory of underground inluences is a unique slant on the subject.

Product Description
Jazz is the most colorful and varied art form in the world and it was born in one of the most colorful and varied cities, New Orleans. From the seed first planted by slave dances held in Congo Square and nurtured by early ensembles led by Buddy Belden and Joe "King" Oliver, jazz began its long winding odyssey across America and around the world, giving flower to a thousand different forms--swing, bebop, cool jazz, jazz-rock fusion--and a thousand great musicians. Now, in The History of Jazz, Ted Gioia tells the story of this music as it has never been told before, in a book that brilliantly portrays the legendary jazz players, the breakthrough styles, and the world in which it evolved. Here are the giants of jazz and the great moments of jazz history--Jelly Roll Morton ("the world's greatest hot tune writer"), Louis Armstrong (whose O-keh recordings of the mid-1920s still stand as the most significant body of work that jazz has produced), Duke Ellington at the Cotton Club, cool jazz greats such as Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, and Lester Young, Charlie Parker's surgical precision of attack, Miles Davis's 1955 performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, Ornette Coleman's experiments with atonality, Pat Metheny's visionary extension of jazz-rock fusion, the contemporary sounds of Wynton Marsalis, and the post-modernists of the Knitting Factory. Gioia provides the reader with lively portraits of these and many other great musicians, intertwined with vibrant commentary on the music they created. Gioia also evokes the many worlds of jazz, taking the reader to the swamp lands of the Mississippi Delta, the bawdy houses of New Orleans, the rent parties of Harlem, the speakeasies of Chicago during the Jazz Age, the after hours spots of corrupt Kansas city, the Cotton Club, the Savoy, and the other locales where the history of jazz was made. And as he traces the spread of this protean form, Gioia provides much insight into the social context in which the music was born. He shows for instance how the development of technology helped promote the growth of jazz--how ragtime blossomed hand-in-hand with the spread of parlor and player pianos, and how jazz rode the growing popularity of the record industry in the 1920s. We also discover how bebop grew out of the racial unrest of the 1940s and '50s, when black players, no longer content with being "entertainers," wanted to be recognized as practitioners of a serious musical form.

Jazz is a chameleon art, delighting us with the ease and rapidity with which it changes colors. Now, in Ted Gioia's The History of Jazz, we have at last a book that captures all these colors on one glorious palate. Knowledgeable, vibrant, and comprehensive, it is among the small group of books that can truly be called classics of jazz literature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn about the real Jazz!
I would highly recommend this book to all Jazz lovers and those who want to learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Source for the Origins of Jazz
Very interesting study of the origin and history of jazz.
Confirms our debt to Black music in America. What an
incredible contribution to our culture!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Thorough
This book seems to be a thorough tale through the south east of playing seemingly non-sensical patterns to the current popular view of Jazz as it is played today, in verious forms.I am excited to read more of the book and learn more about Jazz' roots.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good college text
When I was in college as a music major I took Jazz History. We used another of Ted Gioia's texts on West Coast Jazz as part of the required reading. Now that I am leading my own Jazz Band and trying to teach history to individuals right out of high school, I needed a quick touch-up to my foundational knowledge. This book let me know that I was on the right track and gave me some good directions to get more information.

5-0 out of 5 stars fills in many gaps
I have read practically every jazz history book that was published in the past 50 years. Some, such as the seminal "Blues People", do a great job of exposing the socio - political aspects of the music and its makers. Others did a thorough job of detailing the events that were connected to the music. Gioia is the first that I know of to give as much attention to the social aspects as well as the musical and chronological aspects. I teach a Jazz and Politics course in the university (PoliSci dept) and Gioia's book helped me in some of the issues I needed to raise. It is still not the ultimate book - this has to written, but it is a big step forward in Jazz writing and a must for every student of the music. ... Read more
