Excerpt: The Jordan River Foundation is a non-profit organization started in December 1995 in Amman, Jordan to empower society, especially women and children, and in turn, improve the quality of life to secure a better future for all Jordanians. The foundation was founded by and is chaired by Queen Rania Al-Abdullah. The foundation's mission statement reads as follows: "The foundation's mission is to promote, in partnership with stakeholders, the development of a dynamic Jordanian society by initiating and supporting sustainable social, economic and cultural programs that empower communities and individuals based on their needs and priorities." The main entrance of the showroom.Located on Jabal Amman, the Jordan River Foundation showroom occupies the house built in the 1936 by Salim al-Odat. Odat rented the house to the British army which then occupied Jordan throughout the 1930s to be used as offices. He sold it in 1939, after which it went through a number of owners in which it was used as a house, a police station, and a school during the 1960s. But in the 1980s, the house was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Then, at the end of the decade, when a potential buyer threatened to tear down the house, architect Zaid al-Qoussous bought it so as to preserve the house. In 1994, the house was bought and renovated by the Jordan River Foundation to be used as their showroom. Several companies and embassies contributed to the renovation: Bani Hamida weavingsThe Bani Hamida Women's Weaving Project is one of the projects hosted by the Jordan Ri...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=17891149 ... Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts in Jordan face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts to Jordan? How important is Jordan compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts vary from one country of origin to another in Jordan? On the supply side, Jordan also exports human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts. Which countries receive the most exports from Jordan? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts in Jordan. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts for those countries serving Jordan via exports, or supplying from Jordan via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Jordan fits into the world market for imported and exported human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Jordan in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Jordan is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Jordan compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes. ... Read more

Product Description

In Edith Wharton’s works, references to architecture, interior decoration, painting, sculpture, and fashion abound. As these essays demonstrate, art and objects are for Wharton evidence of cultural belief and reflect the values, assumptions, and customs of the burgeoning consumer culture in which she lived and about which she wrote. Furthermore, her meditations about issues of architecture, design, and decoration serve as important commentaries on her vision of the literary arts.

In The Decoration of Houses she notes that furniture and bric-à-brac are often crowded into a room in order to compensate for a "lack of architectural composition in the treatment of the walls," and that unless an ornamental object "adequately expresses an artistic conception" it is better removed from the room. These aesthetic standards apply equally to her construction of narratives and are evidence of a sensibility that counters typical understandings of Wharton as a novelist of manners and place her instead as an important figure in the development of American literary modernism.

Essays in this collection address issues such as parallels between her characters and the houses they occupy; dress as a metaphor for the flux of critical fashion; the marketing of Wharton's work to a growing female readership ; her relationship to mass culture industries such as advertising, theater, and cinema; the tableaux vivant both as set piece and as fictional strategy; the representation of female bodies as objets d’art; and her characters’ attempts at self-definition through the acquisition and consumption of material goods. All of Wharton’s major novels&#151The House of Mirth, The Fruit of the Tree, Ethan Frome, The Custom of the Country, Summer, The Age of Innocence, and Twilight Sleep&#151as well as her short stories, criticism, and essays are explored.

Gary Totten is Assistant Professor of English at North Dakota State University. His essays on Wharton and her contemporaries have appeared in American Indian Quarterly, American Literary Realism, College Literature, Dreiser Studies, and MELUS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Insight Into Life In the Middle East!
This book is exceptionally well written. And my Mother and I both vied for it when we were reading it.It provides insight into the personal experience of a girl whose best friend is subsequently killed by her father for being seen with a non-Muslim guy. It is absolutely chilling what goes on in that part of the world. And this author brings to light an issue that people don't want to think about, but which is very real nonetheless. The Muslim world is in dire need of reform especially where its treatment of women is concerned. And this book provides a fascinating chapter towards the end of just how in depth the killing of women is in Middle Eastern culture. In my opinion, the author deserves an award for best writing.Phenomenal!

3-0 out of 5 stars okay book
I don't care if the book is real or if the author stole money from someone or 'made up' this story. I care about how MEN treat WOMEN, and I have lived/worked in a number of islamic stronghold countries over the past 30 years. I'm in my 60s now. When I lived in Jordan no one (not even my employer) knew that I spoke the language. I was over 40 at the time. When a woman is over 40 islamic men treat them as 'token men', because women of that age or older are no longer considered 'sex objects'. The men will talk freely in front of the women. Cavaet: Since I am American, I only know how they talk in front of American women over 40. They did not know I understood what they were saying, not at all.

There are 'honor killings' in islamic countries. Moreover there are honor killings in the 'free world' too, by ISLAMIC transplant families.

All religions are designed by MEN to subjugate WOMEN. They are NOT 'inspired words of God' since God would not discriminate against one half of its creation, not according to what I believe. God is omniscient, omnipotent and not 'sexist' at all.

Islamic countries like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, etc. DO mistreat women. RICH women, maybe not, because they have protection and they have no reason to do anything but lead lives of indolence. POOR women (there being no middle class) are the ones who are enslaved, disdained, and murdered 'at will'. Are there women who are beloved by their men? Sure. Not everything or anyone is 100% evil. Even Hitler had a 'good' side (he didn't turn people into lampshades on his own, he had a LOT of help, so don't slam for saying he may have had some good in him. No one knows.)

That's all. Don't trust Islam to do any kind of 'good' for WOMEN. What it may do for MEN, who cares, not me.

5-0 out of 5 stars HONOR LOST: an eye opener
HONOR LOST is a provocative and true account of an atrocious but accepted treatment of women who dare to step outside the bounds of a narrow, controlling Muslim patriarchy. It gives one something to think about as countries continue to acquiesse to the demands of people who share a similar world view and wish to impose their alien way of life on gullable and politically correct countries of the west.

4-0 out of 5 stars Honor Lost
A riveting story, well-written, revealing mores and traditions which we have no idea of in America. The author was very brave to reveal what goes on in her native land between family members. Hopefully, this will lead to some reforms in Jordan.

1-0 out of 5 stars 100% Fiction....
It has been recently revealed that the novel is completely a work of fiction. The author has never even lived in Jordan and bases a book from her own imagination as the truth. Don't even bother with this book. ... Read more
