Editorial Review Product Description Tied to the land by a mixture of hardscrabble farming, free-range hill herding, hunting, gathering, and fishing, the region's inhabitants have perpetuated traditional handicrafts and passed on a complex folklore. They speak a distinct nasal dialect and compose and play a "mournful" genre of country music. Their adherence to an emotionally vigorous Calvinism does not stand in the way of their production of moonshine whiskey, and they bury their dead in graveyards that reflect a particular deathlore. In The Upland South, the geographer Terry Jordan-Bychkov explores the region's character through an analysis of its traditional cultural landscape. Seen through Jordan-Bychkov's eyes, the built environment and its artifacts--houses, barns, town plans, graveyards, church structure, fences, and the like-- reveal much about the nature and distribution of Upland South life and culture. The Upland South is an uplifting, informative, and richly illustrated book about a distinctive region in America. It is sure to be a welcome addition to the literature of the South, for scholars and general readers alike. |

Editorial Review Product Description A house is a site, the bounds and focus of a community. It is also an artifact, a material extension of its occupants' lives. This book takes the Japanese house in both senses, as site and as artifact, and explores the spaces, commodities, and conceptions of community associated with it in the modern era. As Japan modernized, the principles that had traditionally related house and family began to break down. Even where the traditional class markers surrounding the house persisted, they became vessels for new meanings, as housing was resituated in a new nexus of relations. The house as artifact and the artifacts it housed were affected in turn. The construction and ornament of houses ceased to be stable indications of their occupants' social status, the home became a means of personal expression, and the act of dwelling was reconceived in terms of consumption. Amid the breakdown of inherited meanings and the fluidity of modern society, not only did the increased diversity of commodities lead to material elaboration of dwellings, but home itself became an object of special attention, its importance emphasized in writing, invoked in politics, and articulated in architectural design. The aim of this book is to show the features of this culture of the home as it took shape in Japan. (20040901) |

Editorial Review Product Description Water is a key issue on the agenda of peace between Israel and its Arab neighbours. The circumstances in which Gaza gained its autonomy leaves it in a disadvantageous position with respect to water, and a deal on the hotly contested issue of the West Bank aquifers will be a protracted process. This book brings together the work of individuals involved directly in the negotiations and experts from various disciplines who have devoted their professional lives to the study of water and its management in the Jordan Basin. It looks at the issue from many different perspectives, offers new ideas and presents a realistic picture for the future. Customer Reviews (1)

Editorial Review Product Description
The book’s 11 chapters, written by prominent authorities in water resources management, offer a thorough description of the tri-state geophysical setting, policy issues, and stakeholder interests in the ACF-ACT compact negotiations, as well as the long, rich legal history of interstate agreements and the role of the federal government in these agreements. The result of an 18-month project by the U.S. Geological Survey through the Alabama Water Resources Research Institute, which allowed for cooperative research among co-principal investigators from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, this book will be of immediate interest to researchers, policy makers, and stakeholders in the ACT/ACF, as well as those involved in natural resources management, economics, environmental management, conflict resolution, and water law.

Editorial Review Product Description The Essential Earth is a whole new way to open students’ eyes to the physical world around them, to learn how scientists explore it, and what we need to do to both protect ourselves from it (hazards) as well as protect it from us (global change). In just 14 chapters, it offers a well-focused introduction to the basics of geology that emphasize the process of science and how humans interact with our home, Spaceship Earth. The Essential Earth is NOT an abridged version of Understanding Earth, cowritten by the same authors. It is a wholly re-envisioned book, written specifically for instructors who want a scientifically sound text that a non-scientific audience will embrace—one that is clearer, briefer, more exciting, and less expensive that anything else available. Editorial Review Product Description Why is the West--both in the United States and Canada--not like the East? Traditionally, two answers have been given to the question: Either the West is a pioneer culture--the old frontier moved westward from what we now call the East--or the West is a unique subculture originating in a human response to the demands of a dry, rugged physical environment. In this groundbreaking volume, Terry Jordan and his co-authors look to the log folk buildings of the Mountain West, from New Mexico to Alaska, to explain why the West is "the West." Arguing that artifacts such as dwellings, barns, and fences can, if correctly interpreted, reveal much about the origins and character of the regional culture, they set forth not only the first comprehensive description and analysis of Western folk architecture but also a systematic explanation of the culture of the West. "The West," the authors conclude, "is at once indigenous and imported, innovative and ultraconservative, Anglo-American and ethnic, unitary and plural." Westerners tinkered, invented, modified, and diversified. No single adaptive strategy brought to the West worked flawlessly in the new habitat. By extensive field investigation of still-extant folk houses, fences, barns, hay derricks, and cabins--all elements of material culture--they explain what the land tells us about the West. |

Editorial Review Product Description For years the prevailing view among scholars has been that postcolonial Australia is "an undifferentiated composite of Anglo-Celtic culture," in which English, Irish, Welsh, and Scottish components quickly fused into a singular culture. But based on extensive field research, this study questions that view: the authors' compilation of data from 13,271 tombstones revealing the birth place of the interred, from 565 graveyards throughout Australia, shows "point-to-point and shire-to-shire migration from the British Isles to Australia." As a result, they also uncover Australia's distinct regional clusters of specific groups from the British Isles—and the differences of religion, dialect, urbanization, and agriculture that accompany them. |
