Product Description
"Six o'clock silence of a new day beginnin'Is heard in the small Texas town.Like a signal from nowhere, the people who live thereAre up and moving around."Singer-songwriter Steven Fromholz's earliest memories go back to a small Texas town where he spent summers with his grandmother. He gave those memories expression in three songs--"Daybreak," "Trainride," and "Bosque County Romance"--that together form his "Texas Trilogy." This classic folksong has resonated with listeners from its first recording on the 1969 Frummox album From Here to There to Lyle Lovett's recent rendition on his album Step Inside This House. In this book, Craig Hillis and Bruce Jordan offer their own take on Fromholz's "Texas Trilogy." At the heart of the book are over 140 photographs of Bosque County, Texas, which capture the moods and some of the actual locales mentioned in the songs. Accompanying them are comments from local residents, Fromholz, Hillis, and Jordan, who talk about life "in the small Texas town." In addition to the photos, Fromholz explains how he wrote "Texas Trilogy," and Hillis and Jordan discuss why the song has such enduring meaning. Hillis also provides a history of Bosque County. A digitally remastered CD of the original recording is included in the book. ... Read more

Product Description
This set provides comprehensive materials concerning Josephine Butler's campaign for the repeal of the Contagious Diseases Acts in Britain and the Colonies, and sets her workin its appropriate historical context. Until now, these papers have been difficult to access; many of the relevant anthologies are out of print, and the fragile originals have been deteriorating after over a century of use. In addition to Butler's own work, the thematically organized volumes include related texts which are important for understanding her campaign. The collection includes reset versions of pamphlets, books, media responses to Butler's activities, letters to The Times, articles from The Lancet, Pall Mall Gazette, The Shield and The Dawn as well as private letters both to and from Butler.
The set is introduced through a substantial essay by Jane Jordan, one of the leading international scholars on Butler's life and works, and each volume contains a short introduction by the editors. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction with NO NO BASIS IN RESEARCH
Of all the possible history books out there, this rates near the bottom. In a histroy book, you look for three things:
1. An array of scholarly views
2. Research backing, i.e., it doesn't contradict known facts, and it cites research, making it a credible report of history, and not some essay or historical narrative.
3. Lack of basic simplicity of persons and events.

This book fails all three of these tests. It has only one scholarly view, the main narrative, which is not only riddled with grammatical errors, but has such a weak vocabularly that a five-year-old could read it. The basis in opinion for 90 percent of the content is UNREAL. They simplify each and every event so as to create such gross generalizations as "the southwestern tribes of the native americans could be best classified as 'the peaceful ones'". This is not only horribly generalized, but factually incorrect for the tiem period. The name 'the peaceful ones' is also an insulting attempt at sounding 'indian' in their opinion, in attempt at gross simplification.
In addition, this book contains iconization to the point that you have very little idea who these people were. It goes over the clevarness of 'our founding fathers' in such a way that you expect the coulds to part above one's head while reading it.
How does this text deal with such other, less romantic views of history? Well it finds way to include a history of the genicide that occured in america in the 1600's of such tribes as the powhattan, but includes the notion that the Jamestown Settlers were peaceful with the Indians, unless provoked, and includes such equalization, that you might think that they went to the 'rainbow room to work through their problems'. The authors go through such obvious pains to not offend anybody, that 'nobody did anything wrong,' we might as well go watch the sunset and read about the wonderful history of our country.
I'm not an anti-patriot. I believe in this country, but I also believe in being fair, accurate, and up front. The text contains literal jugements upon historical figures, and they are distributed in such a way that you'd think they and certain people were best friends, while others were social enemies.
I am an editor for a local newspaper, a style which is very similar to historical reporting. If this book were content, I would promptly fire the authors, and then ask who approved it in the first place? This is irresponsible! Something must be done!

This is not a factual book. This is a book of not only pure fiction in some parts, but is an insult to america. The authors also try very hard to talk about 'you and me', that is, the reader and the author. I pity any school who employs this book in its curricilum. It's no wonder that many people dislike our country; they sit around classrooms being told to worship it! ... Read more
