Product Description
"Academics are expected to write but seldom consider and discuss the nature of academic writing. As a result, the practice is shrouded in mystery. Writing for Academic Journals makes explicit much of what is normally opaque and it should be among the first ports of call for any academic who is contemplating getting published. This new edition achieves the near-impossible: improving on what was already acknowledged as a first-rate compendium".

Professor Ronald Barnett, Institute of Education, University of London, UK

"Our experience is that Rowena's practical approach works for busy academic staff. Not only does it enable them to increase their publication output and meet deadlines, but it boosts enthusiasm for writing and stimulates creative thinking."

Kate Morss, Director, Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh, UK

This book unravels the process of writing academic papers. It tells readers what good papers look like and how they can be written.

Busy academics must develop productive writing practices quickly. No one has time for trial and error. To pass external tests of research output we must write to a high standard while juggling other professional tasks. This may mean changing our writing behaviours.

Writing for Academic Journals, Second Edition, has been comprehensively updated to include the most recent research and theory in order to provide new knowledge on writing across the disciplines. Drawing on her extensive experience of running writing workshops and working closely with academics on developing writing, Rowena Murray offers practical and tested strategies for good academic writing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Phil Books and CD's
I have and read every book Dr. Phil has written and 2 of the CD Book's.There isn't any information that he proects that isn't helpful. This man is down to earth and I watch or tape his show every day.I have improved my own life from listening, reading, and watching him.I can't even imagine him being behind a desk and seeing clients on an hourly basis on his couch sort-of-speak.He is doing what he is suppose to be doing and God Bless him for including his family. He is Mr. Wonderful. It would be my dream to meet him some day.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh...
Repeats itself quite a bit. If you can get it cheap enough, then I reccomend it. If not, skip it.

1-0 out of 5 stars choose a better self help book
I was dissappointed in this journal, because it seemed like more of a workbook. I was expecting more of a self help book, not a book which I had to write my own opinions. I bought this book to hear the opinions of another person, that is not what I recieved. I do not think that is helpful, but if you like to do exercises, go ahead and try it.

1-0 out of 5 stars A MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT!
If you have read Life Strategies or have completed any of the exercses in the Life Strategies Workbook, then you are already on your way to self-discovery.Both are excellent self-help tools and highly recommended. However, this journal is not like the original book or the companion workbook and readers could be very disappointed. There is nothing contained in this journal that would lead one to self-discovery other than what the reader actually chooses to write. You are not prompted for ideas, thoughts or feelings but left to your own resources to express your own thoughts. There are a variety of basic journals on the market, many for more outstanding than this one, so invest your money in the Life Strategies book and the Life Strategies Workbook and pass on the Self-Discovery Journal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Personal Growth!
This journal will help you to map out and record your quest for self-discovery and enlightenment. The lay out is great and you will find all of the extra tools and hints are useful and somewhat inspiring. Dr. McGraw has done it again! I also like to use this journal to record my personal growth from a book by Matt Pasquinilli called "The Child Whisperer." Even though the book is written with parents and teachers in mind, the ideas are simple to understand and apply to any person of any age. ... Read more

When nomad artist and free spirit Dan Price began jotting down his musings in the form of whimsical drawings and inspired prose, he hardly could have imagined that his self-published journal-zine, the MOONLIGHT CHRONICLES, would earn him a cult following across the country. Now in its twentieth edition, the MOONLIGHT CHRONICLES has brought Dan's creed of "truth, beauty, and really big sabbaticals from the convention of life" to thousands across the countryWith such a following, Dan figured it was time to collect his offbeat observations into book form in hopes of inspiring other would-be journal writers to take pen, camera, and brush in hand. As Dan is fond of noting "Seems there's tons of empty journal books, but not too many on how to fill 'em up!" 5-0 out of 5 stars journal of life book review
I totally enjoyed this book and have been inspired to keep my own sketchbook - journal. This book is a gift from the author to the reader. The author puts his creative heart into it and makes the daily journal process accessible to everyone, at any age or level of skill, or artistic talent. All that is required is the creative inclination and courage to start. This is a fun little book that helps you drop any blocks and start where you are utilizing a little journal to record of the best and often overlooked occurrences in your daily life.

5-0 out of 5 stars So inspiring and creative
I have found this book so inspirational, it was exactly what I expected. It has inspired to want to live a life like Dan Prices, creative, free-spririted traveller and explorer, to be at one with nature, not materialistic, and to draw my life for the rest of my live, anything and everything. He has helped me to define my artistic skills and create and appreciate my own style. Will never forget this book, will cherish it forever and refer to it again and again if ever i'm in need of a bit of artistic inspiration.

3-0 out of 5 stars Might be good for you, not so much for me...
I was looking to read this book for a couple of main reasons.First I wanted some motivation in helping me start a journal and second I really wanted some input and guidance on how to use that journal for reflection and analysis of my thoughts and events.

This book does a great job of motivating the reader to go out and experience lots of offerings in life and to see the beauty of the world. It makes great references to expanding out and using the journal for drawings and adding photos to it to capture life's moments.I would best characterize the author's interpretation of a journal as a an album of your life containing writings, sketches, and photos that capture your life's events. However, I see that as part of journal; but, also I see a journal as a way to capture your thoughts and events that may be good and/or bad in your life and use it for reflection and I had expected there to be some of that in there in terms of helpfulness to guide that process.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet - and great if you are a beginner
This is a very sweet little book. I enjoyed it but found it a little hard to read because of the color of some of the pages. Author could have used lighter color for his accent pages.

Does not provide much "how-to", but rich in encouraging journaling, sketching and using photos (scrapbooking-like). If you have never ventured into journaling, or have only written your observations, this may be just right for you.

As someone who teaches creative journaling and is not afraid to put pen to paper (whether as a scribe or artist), I found it far too basic for me and what I was expecting. I like his approach, but would have preferred to have had a bit deeper discussion, or more ideas about how to get started. Then I would have given it more stars.

This book is as much doodles of the mind as it is doodles of the pen. It was too "lite" for my wishes. I give him 5 stars for the idea, 3 stars for the execution of the idea, thus my 4 star rating and why I am reselling my copy.

I suggest you also look at any of Sark's books Succulent Wild Woman, Sark's Journal and Play!Book : A Place to Dream While Awake or Juicy Pens, Thirsty Paper: Gifting the World with Your Words and Stories, and Creating the Time and Energy to Actually Do It to see what is possible.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun little book, but fall apart easily
I just love the way it is written and the playfulness of the book.

It doesn't teach you how to draw necessarily but ideas what to draw and how to go about it.

I like it, but I'm sorry to say that It did fall apart after just a few days. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Writing and Being: Embracing Your Life Through Creative Journaling
Like many people, my experiences in English class were uninspired and downright dreary. The teacher told us to write about our summer vacation so painstakingly we all wrote some sort of drivel, as short and quickly as possible. Inevitably, that work came back with red marks all over it. I really wish I would have had G. Lynn Nelson as a teacher.

G. Lynn Nelson started out his career just like every other English teacher, ready with that red pen in his hand. Then, he had an epiphany which changed his teaching style and the lives of many of his students. Creative writing became his weapon against lack of creativity and the hatred of writing.

Writing and Being is an excellent guide to the beginnings of creative write either for person journal writing or for pieces that will eventually be seen by the public. This book would make an excellent text for a high school creative writing course but could easily be tailored to suit younger students or even adults wishing to reconnect with themselves. Personally, writing in my journal is an automatic part of my day, like brushing my teeth or checking my email. It keeps me centered and allows me to look to the heart of the issues that I face each day.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best writing exercises ever!
This is a gem of a book. I've read through the entire book, and have worked my way through about half of the exercises, and the author has the most tremendous, deep writing experiences that I've ever seen. But not for the faint of heart, because the journal writing prompts he gives are truly deep. They may take you to interior places that you haven't visited in a while.

A superb book. The best I've seen. ... Read more

This is full of ideas on keeping a journal. What type you may want to keep. How to keep it from being boring, and not just a list of what you did.It shows you how to make journaling a way to pass you thoughts, what you seen, how events in history were view, on to future generations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Need Inspiration to Write? You'll find it here...
This has become my favorite book on writing, any type of writing. I know that the book's title contains the phrase "on keeping a journal" and it is certainly about that, but it is so much more. This is a perfect book for a person looking to write a memoir. Johnson's writing is so lyrical; it's almost like reading a song in places. I have found it extremely inspiring. I barely make it through a page without having to stop and write down some wisp of prose brought forth by her words. I highly recommend this book for anyone needing inspiration to write...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good companion piece to The Hidden Writer
A well-written book on the rich rewards of keeping a journal.Full of luminous personal anecdotes. It is intended for the somewhat experienced journal-keeper so it doesn't detail all the various types you can keep, nor does it assign you basic writing exercises.Instead it gets into the psychology of journal-writing, and examines fascinating topics like tracing long-term patterns through your life and shaping material from your journals into memoir. The author alludes to some of the rich material she covered in The Hidden Writer, but only slightly. This is a good companion to The Hidden Writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly inspirational!
"Leaving a Trace: On Keeping a Journal" is simply inspiring! I began reading other books about journaling, and they were so factual with stringent journaling exercises that were geared for the artistically inclined - even experienced - journal keepers, and they were extremely intimidating. If you're a beginner in the world of journals, this book is the best out there, as it's geared for the "every person," giving realistic examples for real people to journal, and very creative exercises to jump start your journaling experience, which only require you to sit down and write. If you're already a journal keeper, this book will renew that love you have for your journal and will re-open your eyes to the wonderful world of journaling, giving it new life.I've been inspired by author Alexandra Johnson, and I cannot wait to explore my journal even further.I recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars What to do with your journals...
I am an avid journaler, and this book was a delight to read.It wouldn't be a book for a beginner, however.Only the first few chapters really talk about how to journal. The rest of the book is more about how to "harvest" your journals and what to do with them to turn them into other creative writing, seeing patterns and writing about those, etc.

The book has some excellent quotes. Here's a good one: "To keep a journal is to know the present is still under consideration, merely a first draft of your experience."So there's some food for thought - and pen!

My favorite books on journaling are "Journal Keeping" by Luann Budd and "How to Keep a Spiritual Journal" by Ron Klug. ... Read more

In the tradition of Annie Dillard and Natalie Goldberg, this resource for writers and non-writers alike shows the act of writing to be a dynamic means of knowing, healing, and creating the body, mind, and spirit.Amazon.com Review
Writing for Your Life is an inspiring companion for anywriter, professional or personal, who sees writing as a spiritualact. Early chapters on creativity and story would appeal to anyoneinterested in breaking through self-imposed boundaries, by encouragingthe writer to "set yourself the task to write not only what you knowbut more especially what you don't know." We've all heard this before, but Deena Metzger (A Sabbath Among the Ruins) provides suchresonant anecdotes and enticing exercises that it begins to seem notonly doable but fun. "Even when writing about ourselves or an eventthat we know well," she says, "we sometimes find that the story ... istaking a direction we never expected. As it is always possible to comeback to the known, it is politic, under these circumstances, to seewhere the story wants to go." Later chapters help writers access theirinner worlds through meditation, spirit guides, mythology, tarotcards, the muse, visions, nature, and dreams. To follow Metzger's bookclosely requires a great deal of hard but rewarding, work. "Maintaining a spiritual practice is an ordeal like climbing amountain," Metzger warns, "and it demands the same of us: commitment, discipline, endurance, focus, and awareness. There at the top is thesky and, perhaps, the large vision, but ultimately the meaning is inthe climbing."--Jane Steinberg ... Read more

There is a major distinction between those who absorb media images as spectators, and those who absorb them as commentators.Responding to images as a journalist, broadcaster, essayist, or critic, requires keen precision and a unique originality. In today's media-saturated environment, the only way to be heard over the din of all the other news reports and commentaries is to write and respond in a manner that is fresh and inviting.MEDIA JOURNAL is a reader containing 40 selections focusing on cultural studies, the media and popular culture. The authors have organized the book by asking readers to do three things:to keep media journals in which they reflect on the uses they make of the voices and images of popular culture, to read and respond to the work of other media critics, and to try their hands at writing media criticism themselves.Readings are drawn from a wide range of writings, and are selected for their liveliness, contemporaneity, and insight.Updated readings better address the diverse media culture of the 1990s.Each reading selection is followed by: "Coming to Terms"--understanding the author in one's own words; "Reading as a Writer"--looking at style and strategy; and "Writing Criticism"--making an author's words and ideas a source for one's own writing. Journalists, writers, cultural historians, critics, philosophers, and anyone interested in popular culture, the media, and cultural studies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny!
Having been abused as a child, I thought I had (through therapy) worked through everything.I still had some residual issues and this daily devotional has been a godsend. The daily readings are on point, not preachy, and have put what is left of my anger and inability to "let go" into perspective.I recommend this devotional/journal to anyone that has some emotional baggage that they have had trouble getting rid of.I look forward to other such books from this author. This one has been a blessing!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ...and I don't usually journal...
Each Day a New Beginning has been a meditation book of mine for years - a dear and beloved start for each day of mine. Then this journal came along and I thought, oh why not....I've never been a journaler, have been given many "beautiful" books, but just never used them. This one I use, EVERY DAY!!!!One of the reasons is that there is a limited and rather small amount of room to write each day - so I can jot down the highlights and not feel like I "failed" becauase I did not fill a page or whatever.Love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent journal
Excellent journal. I've been reading the daily meditations book for many years now and have been writing thoughts on the margins of the pages. Now I have space to write my thoughts. It's great to be able to go back years later and see how my views on different subjects have changed ... or how I've grown. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Examples Throughout
This book is an illuminating look at what is required for successful and engaging feature writing. The examples throughout the book are some of the best newswriting I have ever read. The author does a great job of laying out methods and pointing out things the novice may not think of and the expert may have forgotten.

The strong point of this book is definitely the examples and the included narratives that explain why these stories were successful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Targeted at journalists but useful for academics and other professionals whose work involves significant writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS.
This book is extremely well written and is helping me a lot in my job as a technical writer. It clearly lays out elements to make story telling -- even about the most boring subject -- interesting. It has the most 'bang for the buck' than any other book I've read on this subject; I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good man, that Blundell
The most important concept for a feature writer is capturing and retaining a reader's attention. From everyday living to world catastrophe, a journalist's stories should remain worth telling and reading. William Blundell gives the aspiring student nine chapters worth of calculated steps from his own experience on how to become this writer: working with raw material, story dimensions, planning, execution and organization. He wraps it all up by explaining word craft and editing.
In the beginning section he describes in great detail how to create the thesis for a story, or as he calls it "The Main Theme Statement". This structural tool guides the work from start to finish. Another chapter relates sections of stories he and other journalists have written to know what questions and angles are needed even before heading out the door. Character building and connecting with the people closest to the story, i.e.: the farmer, not the statistics, is emphasized. These example stories teach us about structure and clarity.
Finally, he instructs the student on the value of organization and self-criticism. To organize, one must first grab the reader's attention, explain what the story is about, give details with proof and finish with a selling point. When it comes to being critical, Blundell encourages a dialogue between your left and right brain (the editor and the artist). While the artist writes the piece with a lovely flowing beauty, the critic/editor relentlessly cuts it up using the most crucial bits of information to redefine the story.
This book serves as a wonderful lesson to anyone wishing to become a better writer/storyteller, whatever your individual skill level. Be wary however, after getting half way through the book, I found the stories to be long and almost painful to read. A few times I found myself questioning the effectiveness of the story and skimmed through them. On a positive note, this didn't seem to distract me and his subject matter was easily understood.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a terrific book!
This is a terrific book!Buy it!You'll use it and enjoy it.

This is a tell & show book.First, Blundell tells you what is important and why. Then he supports each assertion with an example in the form of a well written piece. The examples alone are worth reading.\

This the best book I've ever read about writing. ... Read more

Product Description
Studies confirm what avid journalers have always known: that writing about difficult experiences helps the writer move forward. Many self-help books recommend journaling as a way to express emotions and explore past hurts - as well as to simply get organized, make plans, and set goals - yet few of the books show how to do it. In Journalution, Sandy Grason combines the writing guidance of Julia Cameron with the emotional nurturing of Shakti Gawain. With chapters including "Completing Your Incompletions," "Masterminding Your Destiny," and "Communicating with a Higher Power," the book balances basic instruction in the art of journaling with intimate entries from the author and her workshop participants. Activities, such as timed and stream-of-consciousness writing exercises and keeping a dream log, follow each chapter. Throughout, Grason offers guidelines and prompts, encouraging readers to pick up the pen and journal their way to greater self-awareness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So far, so good!
I've only been writing out of this guided journal for a couple weeks, but so far I really like the prompts - they really get me thinking about things and they help give me an outlet.I have a tendency to only write about my day and never really get deep into my emotions or my past too much and I like that this gives me good ideas for journaling.I would reccomend this to someone who is looking to find themselves and learn about what makes them who they are.

5-0 out of 5 stars nurture yourself
A great book that encourages journaling for your soul. I have found this is one of the best ways of taking care of myself from the inside out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Journalution
Sometimes, it's very hard to gain perspective during a difficult time. We see ourselves reacting in an unhealthy way or repeating the same mistakes like some sort of broken machine. Yet, we just can't seem to figure out why we such things or how to break the cycle.

Journaling helps. It's very interesting. You can go for years repeating the same cycle and not see it but spend two weeks writing on a single fixated subject and suddenly you find that you can't deny these issues anymore. Everything is right there in black and white (or blue or whatever).

Still, some people find that they need a little help getting started. That's what Journalution is for. It takes the fear out of the process and gives some really good questions to begin the exploration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listening through Writing
Although I have been journaling since "forever", this book gave me valuable insight on how to become more in tune to my private writings and how they reflect on what my inner-spirit is trying to tell me.I went to a whole new level of using my diary as a way for God to speak to me. Take the time out to read "Journalution", and you will definitely be inspired as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Powerful Tool
This book is a powerful tool for self analysis as well as for anyone that meditates.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow it's a tough one
This book is VERY in depth, probably more than most people want to go.It's allot of work and time consuming although I like it.If you buy it, be prepared to work at it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Many gems, but not well-organized.
I am a fan of Progoff's Intensive Journal and have been doing the journal method for over 20 years. This book is a valuable tool for learning this technique, but it is not well-organized.

The first third of the book does a good job of explaining the method, but the rest of the book has a very meandering style. This is in keeping with the spirit of the journal, but without having done a workshop it will be difficult for people to learn what they need to know on their own with only this book as a guide.

However, AT A JOURNAL WORKSHOP is invaluable commentary for those who have done the various Progoff's workshops. It is also valuable to those who haven't, but it isn't written is such a way that you can learn what you need to know without plodding through the whole book carefully.

It would be great if someone could edit this text and organize it more efficiently. The metaphors and examples are excellent, but it definitely needs some updating and serious editing.

I encourage anyone who has not tried this method to give it a shot. It has been invaluable to me over the years and it's great to hear Dr. Progoff's own words on how to do it.

Although Progoff was a wonderful depth psychologist, he wasn't as good a writer in the conventional sense of the word. However, you need this book to truly capture the full spirit of the Intensive Journal Method. It will be a lot of work to go through it and make sense of it all in the way it's presented. However, it contains pearls of wisdom and excellent tips on how to make the most of the technique.

3-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Reading on this Topic
As a reader with a degree in English and a master's degree too, it dismayed me to have such a hard time comprehending At a Journal Workshop. Maybe I was looking more for quick exercises that I could use with my journal and that made me impatient with the heavy language and obscure concepts of this book.
Perhaps the concepts of Twilight Imagery, Steppingstone Periods and Inner Wisdom Dialogue are easier to grasp in an actual workshop.
More in depth than I wanted to deal with. I recommend The Creative Journal by L. Capacchione which I found sparked some valuable insights for me in my journal writing.

3-0 out of 5 stars In need of an inner editor
I cannot speak to the method itself, as I haven't been using it long enough. However, the book should have had the services of a good editor.Just b/c good journaling requires one to turn off one's inner editor doesn't mean a book about it should be written the same way!Needed someone to tighten up the structure and put signposts in the texts to help the reader follow the structure better. ... Product Description
From 1837 to 1861, Thoreau kept a Journal that began as a conventional record of ideas, grew into a writer's notebook, and eventually became the principal imaginative work of his career. The source of much of his published writing, the Journal is also a record of his interior life and of his monumental studies of the natural history of his native Concord, Massachusetts. Unlike earlier editions, the Princeton edition reproduces the Journal in its original and complete form, in a reading text free of editorial interpolations but keyed to a comprehensive scholarly apparatus.

Journal 8: 1854 is edited from the 467-page notebook that Thoreau kept February 13-September 3, 1854. It reveals him as an increasingly confident taxonomist creating lists that distill his observations about plant leafing and seasonal birds. Two particularly significant public events took place in his life in the summer of 1854. On July 4, at an antislavery rally at Framingham, Massachusetts, Thoreau appeared for the first time in the company of prominent abolitionists, delivering as heated a statement against slavery as he had yet made. And on August 9, Ticknor and Fields published Walden, the book Thoreau had been working on since 1846. In Journal 8 Thoreau indicates that these public accomplishments, though satisfying, took a toll on his creative life and did not fully compensate him for the hours spent away from the woods. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Be careful when you buy this particular item from Amazon
Hello all, I just wanted to say that you should definitely be careful when you purchase this version from amazon.com.I thought that it maybe was that they just did not have the actual picture of it up, but it is totally different. It is not like the other ones in the journal series with Thoreau's face on it and its kind of brown, this one is just a blueish-brown kind of color material and does not look like the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars A day by day look at Thoreau
"Oct. 22nd, 1837. 'What are you doing now?' he asked, 'Do you keep a journal?'-- So I make my first entry today." Thus begins Thoreau's Journal, made up of more then two million words and covering about twenty-five years of his life.No other work of Thoreau's better exhibits his discipline as a writer and his devotion to the natural world. In the Journal can be found the fragmented foundations ofmasterpieces such as Walden, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, The Maine Woods, and Cape Cod.But what is perhaps more interesting to a reader of Thoreau's Journal are his thoughts and insights on topics such as friendship, love, religion, nature, bravery, heroism, war, slavery, the art of writing, and, most important to Thoreau, the art of living.Anyone with any interest in Thoreau will find his Journal to be an invaluable aid in understanding and following the life of one of America's most profound prose writers ...
