4-0 out of 5 stars Self-esteem, not always given sometimes it's built
Never really did any journal before, so i was really interested to see if this "Self Esteem" Journal would work to help me achieve a healthier self esteem level. The questions they propose for us to answer in our journal entries helps us to go deeper within ourselves, our minds and habits and find out what exactly makes you who you are. Overall, i'm still trying to reach towards a better self-esteem level but along the way i have taken a step back (with the help of the book) and found out more intimate things about myself. I have been meaning to keep a pain journal for a long time, and even more so since starting the disability process, but hated the idea of "dwelling" (facing/seeing the issues in b&w)on where I hurt and intensities, didn't know what to write, how to start, excuses, excuses. 5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful book
I love this book.I have gone through it twice, making notes, rereading parts of it again and again. As someone else mentioned earlier this book is worth its price for the bibliography alone. In the pages of this book I have been introduced to new writers who after I read their books introduced me to more new writers and on and on. The book gives examples of the writing journey to selfhood of many women writers. The chapter on dreams and their importance to understanding the inner journey was insightful. For the writer in you the appendix of the book includes writing topics to accompany some of the chapters. It is an encouraging and affirming book of women and their writing primarily journaling. It is a good gift book for mothers, sisters, friends, daughters - for any woman who likes to write.

5-0 out of 5 stars In between journaling, treat yourself to this book...
This is such a lovely read, I enjoyed it thoroughly and always looked forward to getting back to it.Schiwy has a psychoanalytic approach and an accessible writing style that bond together beautifully. She mixes techniques, encouragement, and deep thinking about why and how women can keep journals. The excerpts from various journals merge seamlessly with her own text, and I am now enjoying researching some of the journals to which she has introduced me.An appendix gives a long list of journal-writing topics, corresponding to the chapter themes, and the endnotes and bibliography are similarly extensive.

Schiwy demonstrates such respect and love for the women's journals into which she has either peeked or delved, she sidesteps the voyeuristic aspect of reading someone else's most private words.Perhaps to narrow her theme, Schiwy focuses on women's journals, but using a journal to break free of patriarchic strangleholds is not limited to women only, and I found some of the feminism to come dangerously near to male-bashing, so gents, approach with caution. Some of these journals are from famous women; some are the you and me of the secret society of diarists.Still, women's journals should not be of interest only to women, so gents, take the plunge along with us!This is both a practical and a theoretical handbook, one of the best overviews of journal writing I've had the pleasure to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work!
This is not a "how-to" book AT ALL. (It could be used that way if you want it to be that sort of book - and it would probably be among the best!) It's a book about all that it means to be a woman and to keep a journal while living a life. Absolutely wonderful work - great thinking and great writing. If you've kept a journal, or have possesion of a family members journal, if you've ever wanted to keep a journal, or if you wonder what journal keeping is all about - this is a first rate book.

Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Overview of Women's Journal Writing
This is not so much an exercise book, as it is a book about the practice of women's journal writing. It provides a really good overview of different aspects of keeping a journal. Ms.Schiwy gives suggestions for things suchas choosing a journal and journal privacy, the reasons for keeping ajournal and it's importance in a woman's life. Also included are excerptsfrom published diaries, and an extensive bibliography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Journal writing is an important tool in life
This is a wonderful book on journaling. If you liked this book and would like to read and use more books on journaling, read "The Healing Journey" and "The Healing Journey for Couples," both by PhilRich. There are also 5 other journaling books in the Healing Journeyseries, including "The Healing Journey Through Menopause," and"The Healing Journey Through Divorce." ... Read more

Product Description

A guided journal to help overeaters get to the heart and soul of their eating patterns.

Debbie Danowski guides readers through approximately sixty writing exercises on topics such as fear, shame, forgiveness, progress, abstinence, and goals. The Overeater's Journal is divided into three sections: physical, emotional, spiritual and includes a reproducible food log. Many sources were used to identify the need for a journal on this topic, and Danowski has a solid trade and professional presence, which makes her the best choice today to reach readers.

The Overeater's Journal is inspirational and prescriptive. Danowski's knack for lively narrative will make readers feel motivated and hopeful. Her recent book, Locked Up for Eating Too Much was based on her journal entries while going through treatment for an eating disorder. As a recovering food-addict herself, Danowski has a special ability to connect with readers while her credentials as a Ph.D. qualify her to offer concrete assistance that is both professionally sound and very accessible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help if you're really serious
This book will help you to explore your inner self and your reasons for overeating. It is not light, fun reading. It is a serious book and it demands that you be serious and honest with yourself in order to successfully learn how to abstain from overeating. The steps are simple to understand.Being honest with yourself about your eating habits is not at all simple.A very helpful book when you're ready for that challenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will inspire you
I am a huge fan of Debbie Danowski.Reading her previous book, Locked up for Eating Too Much, literally saved my life.

I had been waiting with anticipation for the Overeater's Journal and Debbie did not disappoint!

This Journal, which is in trade paperback size is absolutely wonderful. It comes with inspirational quotes and valuable information on how to assess whether you may have an unhealthy relationship with food. The questions you are asked to answer are thought provoking and will help you to understand yourself better.

The author knows her subject well (overeating) as she has herself been though the nightmare that is food addiction.

If you feel you may have a problem with food or, if you want some help in staying abstinent, this is the tool for you.

The size makes it convenient to carry around with you and I have been toting it around and jotting notes when I feel I need to "vent" my feelings.Excellent book.

NOW! A cookbook containing recipes for food addicts (no sugar, no flour and measured ingredients) would be the perfect companion to this Journal.

Hopefully, this is next on our author's list!!! ... Read more

Product Description

The loss of a love is a nearly universal emotional crisis, whether the end is divorce, desertion, or a mutually agreed-upon separation. At first, friends and family are there to offer a shoulder to cry on, but after a few months there's an expectation that we just need to get over the crisis and move on. Thus, unprocessed, painful feelings are buried, leaving us numb. Or we repeat damaging relationship patterns over and over again.

The situation doesn't have to be like that. Healing a Broken Heart guides those of us grieving for a lost love through four metaphorical seasons of recovery with provocative questions -- and journal pages on which to respond -- to help move us forward.

The four seasons serve as powerful metaphors for the stages of the grieving process. Summer is the season for charting the course of a relationship: remembering hopes and expectations, the warning signs that went unheeded. During autumn, journalers accept the reality of breaking up and acknowledge things about the relationship that didn't serve their needs. Winter brings the pain of grief over the profound loss. Finally, spring -- and, with it, renewal -- invites readers to examine and understand how their family history may have affected their past relationships.

Punctuated throughout with poems and moving meditations, the thoughtful, interactive approach of this book offers the time and space we all need to heal when our hearts are broken. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great after a break up
This book was very thorough and just what I needed after my boyfriend broke up with me onemail! It made me really think back to the good and bad times and I realized that it was for the better.I actually chose not to write on the pages as I never know if I will have to use it again.(Hopefully not)While not all of the questions fit my situation, I just skipped over them.It really helped me move through the grieving process.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
THIS BOOK IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND JUST SO GREAT EVERY PERSON SHOULD HAVE A COPY!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I'm really glad I bought this. It provides many thought-provoking questions and prompts. The book consists mostly of pages with a question at the top followed by blank lines for you to write. There are some poems, quotations and words of guidance, but it's not about the reading, it's about the writing, which I liked a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book healed not only my heart, but my soul
When my nearly 3 year relationship ended, I was surprisingly relieved- it had been going nowhere for quite some time. But even in the midst of my newfound freedom and happiness, I knew that I still needed to grieve and learn from my mistakes. This journal was a godsend to me. I didn't want to read an advice book since that was not what I was looking for. This journal allowed me to reflect upon what had happened and then look toward the future. The various anecdotes and poems were extremely helpful as well. This journal also fit well into my life; I am often quite busy, and it really allows you to do as little or as much as you want/need to at a time. I can honestly say that I am completely healed and loving life more now than ever after completing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars In-depth way to really heal relationship pain
This is one of the best self-help books I've seen. It actually takes you through a process by which you can understand what happened in your relationship and get your thoughts and feelings out so you can move on. It makes you dig deep and think hard as you go back to the root of the problems that interfered with your relationship. The poetry used is a nice touch and the exercises very effective in helping one get to the grief that's left when your heart is broken. The technique the authors use could be applied to healing other emotional pains as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Preserve And Rescue Your Own Truth By Writing It Down
Writing to Save Your Life is like sitting on the verandah with a much loved friend who encourages and affirms your need to write your life. Every time you see her, your friend reminds you of the importance of your story, not for publication or fame and fortune, but for the healing that occurs when you write your truth.

The friend tells her story, too, at the end of each chapter with essays previously published by Michele Weldon. The author lets us know that she also faces the challenges of everyday life (three kids, a job, a house) taking time and energy and making it difficult to sit down and write. The essays show Weldon as a real-life woman who sought and found help in the writing process rather than just a published-writer.

The words in the title of the book, "to save your life" mean to rescue as well as preserve your own truth. Weldon encourages readers to answer the questions posed in the book to give their words physical space. While writing, "you are using your hands as instruments of your heart and mind," she says. Weldon's term for such therapeutic writing is "scribotherapy."

I don't think of this book as a "how to." What has stayed with me is the memory of that encouraging friend. Though in looking back to refresh my memory, I see that there are steps and suggestions for good writing--focus on the big idea, make an outline, etc. The most powerful exercise follows a description of who we write for--ourselves, of course. It was a powerful exercise in that I honored all the cute and quirky parts of myself. The "me" I write for, I discovered, is the me who calls a writing circle, once the candle is lit, the realm of the sacred. The me who laughs at the same jokes I told in eighth grade. The me who has an insatiable desire not just for reading but for the physical books themselves. I write for the me who still has her fourth-grade composition book. You get the idea. Other women in one of the writing circles I facilitate did the same exercise, and we were able to see one another in a revealing, touching and affirming way.

The author quotes famous writers who found healing in writing, including Anne Tyler and Frank McCourt. Most of the quotes, though, are the thoughts of participants in Weldon's workshops. They illustrate that writing is accessible to all, and anyone who writes can heal from the process.

Weldon has written a personal memoir titled I Closed My Eyes. She also is an essayist, journalist, and lecturer at her alma mater, the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Living in the Chicago area with her three sons, she serves on the board of directors of Sarah's Inn, a domestic violence services agency in Oak Park, Illinois.

I leave you with the words of Weldon, my encouraging friend: "Your story is important. By writing it down and committing your truth to paper, you have honored your life, your truth, and who you are in the world."

5-0 out of 5 stars Writing to Save Your Life: How to Honor Your Story Through Journaling
I have noticed a pattern in my own life. During those periods of my life when I am journaling, I am much more focused and willing to examine those parts of myself that need healing or parts of my life that need to be revamped. Therefore, I wholeheartedly agree with the author that writing is a healing process that can save a life or can help recreate an unhealthy one.

Writing to Save Your Life takes the reader through various exercises to get them started with the journaling process. It provides tips on how to get to the crux of the real problem in order to reduce unnecessary distractions and to quicken the healing effects of the process. The author also provides various strategies and general themes to start journaling as well as strategies about how to deal with the raw emotions that will come up when exploring the past and present issues.

I have to say that the part of the book that I found most relevant and useful was the story about the pillows. Basically, the author had been making countless pillows to fill her time so she never actually had to deal with her pain. We all have our pillows. There is always some excuse why we can't face ourselves or follow our dreams. What is your pillow?

4-0 out of 5 stars Every word is one step closer to closure
Narrative writing is the best, easiest/hardest, and most thorough method of coming to terms with loss and grief.I highly recommend a romp through this book for inspiration and tips.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too female-centerd
This book is really geared toward women who are into feminism. All the quotes in the book are from women in her groups. If you're not into the female-identity world, pick another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Will Change Your Life
It's true.
Last year I took one of Ms. Weldon's "Writing To Save Your Life" workshops. Her workshop appeared in my life at a time when I knew I needed to give voice to my life experiences, but I didn't know how or where to start. And I was scared. As a writer of romance novels, I've always invented stories and been in control of a paper world. I knew it was time to write something for me, about me, but I was paralyzed with fear.

With Ms.Weldon's guidance, something broke inside of me and I started writing and writing, and during the journey I met someone I thought I had lost -- me.

Michele Weldon's workshop was a gift. I'mthrilled that her workshop is in book form to guide people everywhere! Her wit, honesty, and down-to-earth sensibilities come shining through in every chapter.

Ms. Weldon showed me that exploring and giving voice to my story, my emotional truths, was an act of power and courage. She is the guide-friend you've been waiting for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Writing
I wasn't aware, while reading these brilliant journals, that the book is "abridged," but what's here is staggeringly clever, honest and just plain great writing.Even when Plath is writing at her most depressed, it is not a depressing experience to read her journals because they're so wonderfully written.Really good stuff.I enjoyed her journals more than her poetry, to be honest.

3-0 out of 5 stars "White as a knuckle and terribly upset..."
Since her death by suicide in 1963 at age thirty, Sylvia Plath has become an iconic figure of the young tormented soul trapped by the irrationality of the modern world.

These abridged journals (for too long the only ones available) are an indispensable adjunct to the poetry and other writings of Sylvia Plath, giving the reader a window into the mind and creative processes of this brilliant, unbalanced, creative and self-destructive woman.

Between these covers Plath strikes the reader as remote and too measured---as if she was writing even her journals for an audience. This sensation is also heightened by the far too pernicious editing, supervised by her ex-husband, poet Ted Hughes, who effectively censored Plath posthumously, even admitting (in the Foreword) that he destroyed one of the final volumes of her journal, ostensibly to protect their children.

With the release of the unedited version, this abridgement becomes a supernumerary volume, except for the reader who wants to gain a quick glimpse of Plath engaged in the work of her existence. The serious reader is best advised to take up the unexpurgated edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars under the water with sylvia plath
The Journals of Sylvia Plath are an undisputible link to the base of her poetry. For a journal of a life, the entries are incredibly written and interesting.I have been very interested in her death by suicide which was the reason why I picked up these journals in the first place, but I found myself underlining sentences of her different viewpoints on life, ironically. If you you want to figure out about how Plath wrote her poetry and what events formed the woman who is such a mystery today, read this book. The only place where I thought that the diaries lacked was that all the information was not included. Some of her most passionate outrages and angry words have been taken out which I think are definitely a key to her poems that we do not possess. I am aware that the people in the journals must be protected but hope that the full works will be published in the future. The first half of the journals while Sylvia was in college have spoken to me and given me words and reasonings for my feelings that I had not been able to form myself before.I think any college student would benefit from reading her viewpoints and beautiful words. Anyone who is interested in the author will be impressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Book
If you love Sylvia Plath's amazing poetry; if you have an affinity for either reading journals, or writing your own; or if you simply have an interest in the lifestyles and choices of women of some 50 years ago, thesecollected journals are a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real
Another reviewer wrote that this book was a big disappointment - that it stinks. How can one criticize someone's journals? I'm pretty sure Plath didn't expect these to be published one day - and so she didn't write themfor the general public to read. These words are honest, riviting, disturbing, wonderful, priceless. ... Product Description

A beautiful, artistic offering that offers projects on challenging, but universal subjects.

In follow up to Faith Books & Spiritual Journaling, author Sharon Soneff will continue to show that there is a richer, deeper reward to artistic, creative journals beyond the beauty they supply. In this new volume, Art Journals & Creative Healing, she demonstrates with real excerpts from beautiful and unusual artistic journals that the process of journaling can be a tool in navigating through some of lifeÆs more challenging seasons, as well as a tool to support personal growth and achievement. Challenging and complex experiences are treated with dignity and sensitivity, and will inspire readers dealing with their own issues, by placing the greater emphasis on the positive outcome that was yielded for the artist who is willing to be vulnerable in the process. 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
This is a beautiful, informative book and I loved it. I bought it as a reference in teaching workshops on Altered Books and Artists Trading Cards. I created several altered books after reading it ([...] under "January 2009: Altered Book, part 2"). The book would be a great gift for any craft person who is into ATCs or altered art, or who is interested in art as a way to interpret and reflect on one's life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wife loved it.
Ordered this for my wife. She is into crafts and art and loves the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars True Healing Expressions
I have long found art journaling to be a healing process. This book shares some profoundly moving journal entries.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I should have known by the cover art or the author's name, but I was curious. It is disappointingly "scrapbooky" and god heavy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I really liked this book. The pages shown in it were raw with emotion, but there were also several clever ideas for journaling outside of the pages of a book.My favorite part was the blurb in the words of the contributors after each of their projects.I wish more art journaling books included that because having the peek into the mind of the creator really helped me to appreciate their art on a deeper level.

I think this is a great book for anyone serious about any kind of journaling.Exploring negative feelings and experiences and growing from them is a wonderful lesson whether your preferred journaling medium is a full arsenal of art supplies or just a pen and paper. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why this speaks to me
Memoirs, by definition tend to be rote and rife with nothing but facts and places. This publication helps one get to the core of what forces were at work within one's self when the past situation was developing. It helps you put a perspective on your life you may not have known existed. This book also provides the tools (should you care to use them) to begin writing your own memoir from a more "whole" place.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource For Memoir Writers
I was impressed with this book because it doesn't just tell how to write a memoir. It helps its readers to explore themselves in such a way their writing gains more depth. It is full of exercises that can increase the vitality and impact of one's personal writing, and can help one's writing become more vivid and descriptive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Greenwich Village History -- The Real Thing
In every age and culture, young, idealistic artists have wrestled passionately with themselves, their work, and the society that spawned them, fiercely dedicated to making a better world.Greenwich Village had its heyday as a hotbed of culture and revolution, and this volume of daily journal entries by Holly Beye gives us a tactile, gritty, moving portrait of one year in that singular strata of Village life.

The four volumes of Holly's journals that make up this book, covering October 1949 to October 1950, were lost for over fifty years. When she found them, she writes, "I sat back in my chair, overwhelmed with emotion. I could hardly believe what I had been reading."Now in her eighties, she had come face-to-face with herself as a bright, earnest, spunky 27-28 year old. It's easy (especially if you can look back on your twenties) to identify with Holly, a writer, and her painter-printmaker husband David Ruff, living in a dilapidated $30/month basement apartment. They are pennies from destitution at every turn.Yet they remain hopeful: surely, just next week her stories or his prints will sell and they will be rescued.Against a backdrop of Cold War, Korean "Police Action," and McCarthyism, and with the White Horse Tavern as their anchor, Beye and Ruff and their spirited gaggle of creative pacifist friends live anything but a safe, consumerist American dream.Among their closest friends who make regular appearances are the influential writer/artist Kenneth Patchen and his wife Miriam, plus Jonathan Williams, later to be among the most important publishers of the avant-garde.The journals end with Holly and David's exodus from NYC, heading for "sunnier skies" in San Francisco.

The journal form reveals life as it really is: day by day, the sublime and the mundane are equal.Along with Beye's astute, deeply-felt explorations of the creative process and the aims of art, we learn each day's weather, meals, pleasures and discomforts. Both the constant battle with poverty and the rousing tumult of social life among the hordes of NYC are persistent themes that Beye captures in lively, economic, unself-conscious prose. The entries abound with the kind of concrete detail that speaks truth; passages often left me full of a mixture of excitement, inspiration, camaraderie, and sadness.

Since moving to Woodstock, NY in 1955, Holly has stayed politically and artistically active. She helped found the Kingston, NY chapter of the Congress on Racial Equality and participated in demonstrations. She won writing awards and saw her plays produced in NYC, San Francisco, and Woodstock. She directed numerous performances of two actor's troupes, the Heads and Holly's Comets.Suffering a serious accident in 2004 which left her unable to walk, Holly now lives in a nursing home, where she writes, works on The Tibetan Center newsletter, and leads a meditation group for residents.

In more than half a century, life has changed dramatically in so many details, but the fundamental truths of human existence have altered very little.Lives lived with honesty and courage, like Holly Beye's, are an example to us all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Growth Through Meditation and Journal Writing
From book's back cover:

"Growth Through Meditation and Journal Writing: A Jungian Perspective of Christian Spirituality shows how Jung's concept of the feminine aspect of human personality, or the receptive mode, is essential in the development of a mature adult spirituality. The author observes that many psychological problems of adulthood are symptomatic of a deeper spiritual concern, i.e., a search for life meaning and purpose and, ultimately, a search for God.

The psychology of C.G. Jung provides a unique perspective to deal with this problem, because it offers a bridge between the scientific and religious aspects of human experience. This work presents seven dimensions of mature Christian spirituality, providing scriptural references, theological and psychological foundations, exercises in guided meditation and journal writing, as well as a brief bibliography for each dimension." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Life Raft to Write out the Storm
I was expecting a lot from this book and was pleasantly surprised to see it meet those expectations.

This book covers many topics that face writers during their writing process/life.It takes you by the hand and walks you through each one as if you have a coach right there with you. It also has 'try this' exercises at the end of each chapter giving you suggestions of how to work through that perticular road block - a very nice bonus to the book.

There were a couple of very minor typos on the first Introduction page, but aside from that it is a very well written and quite useful book and well worth the price of admission.

It reflects care and skill of the author, who has synthesized many years of writing and teaching writing into a book that's slim in size but huge in ideas. Not one word iswasted here--every quote, writing sample, and idea has purpose. A lovelyeffort and better than 95% of writing how-to books on the market. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I love this book it is illustrated very well and that alone is worth the price, in addition you are given very clear instructions for a number of creative journals. This is definately a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and delicate book
This book is so beautiful and inspiring.
The watercolors are delicate, the instructions are very clear and many different kinds of journals are suggested.
It's a must for anyone who intends to begin a journal, and also for scrapbookers.
The author is a very talented illustrator, and her ideas full of good taste.
Loved it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Several good ideas, instructions a bit sparse
There are some good ideas in this book, and very lovely artwork throughout, although some of her travel projects (like the envelope/stamp holder made from the file folder) are not really sturdy enough to drag with you traveling, unless you are the type who travels to a destination and stays there for weeks at time. And, why go through the hassle of making an attached cover for a clipboard, when you could make a sleeve for it instead?

Also, some of the directions could have been fleshed out a little more--there was plenty of blank space in the book to do so. One example: the author mentions a "weaver's knot", but doesn't have an illustration to show how to tie it.

3.5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artful Journaling
This book is filled with wonderful ways to journal things that go on in your life.
It gives you so many suggestions of ways to make your memories more meaningful.
I especially like the idea of making little diagrams or inserting pictures to help you
remember something in better detail.
The authors illustrations are so beautifully done.
This book also makes a wonderful gift.......
Thank you Janet for sharing your talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it and you will love it !!!
This is the perfect book for beginners in journaling and also someone already accomplished. I was really inspired by her ideas.
Her illustrations are very sweet and beautiful and she gives you ideas on how to start painting. She shows you how to collect tickets, leaves and other items from your trip and include them in your journals.
Her details on how to do binding with her illustrations make it easy. My journals aren't boring anymore! I now have more colors and details!
I can't wait to go another one of her workshops !

Product Description

These previously unpublished journals of England’s first voyage to India illuminate a fascinating cultural achievement: the first performances of Shakespeare outside Europe. The journals of the London East India Company voice the ambitions, divisions, and traumas of a pivotal moment in the emergence of global capitalism, as London’s merchants strived for distant markets and cultivated relationships with non-Europeans. Barbour’s commentary situates the voyage historically, describes the key personnel and writing community, examines the culture of performance at sea, and consolidates the evidence for the shipboard productions of Hamlet and Richard II.
