Product Description
Research has shown that writing is a process – writers gather information, organize, draft, revise, and publish their work. Kenneth Rosenauer has adapted this research to create Storycrafting: A Process Approach to Writing News, a fully developed, process-oriented news-writing textbook that provides students effective tools to grapple with the complex task of writing.

Storycrafting is based on the notion that all good writing is, in a sense, good storytelling. The text makes liberal use of writing examples from award-winning college and university newspapers, allowing readers to see how their peers successfully handled similar writing tasks. By focusing on the “how” instead of the “what” of news writing activity—the process rather than the product—Storycrafting: A Process Approach to Writing News shows student journalists how to proficiently craft compelling and meaningful news stories.

In the first five chapters, Rosenauer establishes the foundation for using the “process approach” to teach news writing. This approach enables students to start writing sooner and to write as they learn. Once the foundation is in place, closely related aspects of process follow: ownership, audience, peer review, and coaching. Beginning with chapter six, students discover additional in-depth resources to hone their news writing knowledge and skills, all presented through the filter of the process approach. The final three chapters of the book focus on journalistic conduct, legal and ethical issues, and current trends in journalism.

Each chapter includes numerous “For Practice” and “Crafting and Drafting” story-writing opportunities. The accompanying Instructor’s Resource Manual (available free on the Web) describes the theoretical underpinnings of process methodology and provides both new and experienced journalism educators the tools to make this book an effective and exciting component of the classroom experience ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Reporter is more than complete!
Although this publication is currently out-of-print, The Complete Reporter is one of the best journalism textbooks I've ever read.

As a seasoned reporter who holds a master's degree in journalism, I would recommend every aspiring journalist try their hardest to get an available copy of this journalistic treasure.I was fortunate enough to obtain a used -- and albeit tattered -- copy of this classic.

Chockful of wisdom and advise, this text lays the foundation for a successful trek to writing strong news and feature copy.I highly recommend you search the Out-of-Print section of Amazon.com to get a copy of this gem! ... Read more

Product Description
Fires, floods, celebrity lifestyles, heroic acts of humble people, and cute acts by family pets. Sensational news seems to take up an increasingly large part of contemporary broadcast journalism, but it is regularly dismissed as having no place on our screens.

In Tabloid Television, John Langer argues that television's "other news" must be recognized as equally important as "hard news" in the building of a comprehensive study of broadcast journalism. Using narrative analysis, theories of ideology, concepts from genre studies and detailed textual readings, "other news" is explored as a cultural discourse connected with story- telling, gossip, social memory, the horror film, national identity and the cult of fame. An eclectic and intriguing look at one of the most maligned areas of television news, Tabloid Television offers some interesting speculation about where the news might be heading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a scholarly treatise on a populist revolution
Five stars for effort and for filling-- at least somewhat-- a major gap in the coverage of television history.Mr. Langer's work is an expansive (and expensive) overview of a television revolution that still has not beeengiven its due respect. One would have liked to read an account of this genrefrom the INSIDE... to find out what made these television journalists (andextremists) tick... to get some of the dirt that these shows "dugup" on others... but for now this scholarly treatise will have tosuffice. The book has the facts, it has the university opinions... what'smissing is the fire, the spark, the soul-- the humor-- that made tabloid TVso vital in its day. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Writing Effective News Releases...
There is a lot of fluff and un-necessary information here just for the sake of filling pages. If you manage to go through all the fluff there are some good info as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Press Release book I've seen
This is the best book on writing press releases I've seen.I have written many press releases in my job over the years and this book is an excellent guide.I recommend to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
If you're thinking of purchasing this title, do it! I studied it over the course of one week. The next week, I drafted my news releases. The third week, I sent them out to 35 newspapers and two of them picked up the story. This is a hit rate of almost 10% and I know I wouldn't have achieved it without the principles I learned in this book. And by the way, this was the first news release I'd ever written. This book WILL teach you what you need to know.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insider's take
Did I get on the front page after reading this? Definitely NOT.

Did it give me insight on what an editor may be thinking when I write? Absolutely.

The examples are very to the point on what format to do and not to do. Very down to earth, a lot of examples, pretty well written. It covers a range of examples, from announcements for retirement parties to press releases for products. ... Read more

From the supplier: Network executives believe the quality of television newswriting is not up to par. Many on-air reporters and anchors do not know the fundamentals of writing, are sloppy, or do not feel that writing well is important. Some reporters do not have the common sense and general knowledge which underlies good writing. A difficulty in newsrooms is that TV writers are not given enough time to concentrate and think about stories they are writing. News directors appear not to be addressing the problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag
A strength of this book is the last chapter which discusses convergence and online journalism. Students need to be prepared for the reality of preparing copy for myriad delivery systems. Each medium has unique requrements for writers seeking to get their messages across. Some media forms are more visually oriented than others, for example.

The beginning of the book is another strong area as he discusses writing in conversational style and goes on to identify key terms in the industry. Chapter three on "people-izing" gets to the essence of what broadcast journalism is all about. If it isn't relevant to people there's no point.

While the book has a lot of valid things to say about the subject matter, the author has a blind spot. He's biased. This comes out in his examples. This illustrates how bias enters news when instructors and textbook writers are unaware of their own prejudices. I don't think it's intentional, but it's there nonetheless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book has made me realize how much I misuse the English language in both speech and text. I will probably never be able to commit all the information in the book to memory, but its still very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the best
If you care about the language, you'll find this book invaluable.I like it better than any English grammar book I've seen.Dr. Arnold's book is a remarkably strong, easy-to-understand book. It's a book I always turn to when I am in a crunch with my own writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for students and professionals alike
I was a student of Dr. Arnold's at Marshall University, so I'm not completely unbiased. With that said, however, this book, the author aside, is always the first or second book I consult for journalism problems, questions or concerns. Completely different than the AP Stylebook, which focuses more on getting names/places/things correctly identified (read: how to correctly spell and hyphenate "Band-Aid"), this book is a wonderful source for basic English refreshers, such as noun-pronoun agreement, prepositions and sentences and syntax; punctuation, including how and when to use and not use periods, question marks, etc.; and, it includes a terrific "Quick Reference" section detaiing words that are frequently confused and misspelled, such as "over" and "more than," and a section on wordiness and trite expressions, such as not using "first annual." I am still working out of my 1996 edition, and find there are many days I wouldn't make it through without it! Thank you, Dr. Arnold, for your instruction and this wonderful book I'll carry with me throughout my career. (I may even have to update to a more current version?)

4-0 out of 5 stars Who would have thought?
I've used Arnold's book since 1997, when I purchased it for a journalism course at Marshall University. If I had known what a valuable resource this book would prove to be, I would have bought several. As a writer, I turn to this book on a regular basis. The pages are worn, the metal binding is bent, but I will never stop using this book.Media Writer's Handbook is a great source for writers and editors in all genres.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable reference tool for any mass media writer.
Dr. Arnold's book should sit next to any journalist's AP Stylebook. That says a lot about the number of times I've pulled it off my shelf to double-check the use of a verb or just to make sure I'm using the correctword or punctuation for the writing situation at hand.

It's quick, it'seasy and it's also a reminder that despite the number of years I've beenwriting in journalistic style, there's an awful lot of ways to foul up.This book helps make sure I don't embarrass myself. ... Read more
