Extractions: Welcome to the Kansas Water Office web page. The Kansas Water Office works with Kansans and the state's water resource agencies to develop the comprehensive State Water Plan. It's a multi-faceted plan that deals with issues including water quality, water conservation, water management, water-based recreation, public water supplies, flood management, and wetland and riparian management. F inancial support for the State Water Plan programs comes from all Kansans through fees, Economic Development Initiative Fund (lottery money), royalties on mined sand and the State General Fund (tax dollars). A lot of that work may be made possible thanks to federal funds available through the 2002 Farm Bills Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP). The Water Office helps communities establish water conservation plans. They do several things. For one, they help communities prepare should a drought occur as it did in 2002 in Kansas. As the water supplies grow tighter, communities take successively stricter actions to be sure all customers will be served. The Water Office also works with communities to insure that the water drawn from surface water (streams or lakes) in eastern Kansas or groundwater (Ogallala aquifer) in western Kansas and treated is not lost due to leaks in the delivery system. The costs of pumping, treating and delivering
