Extractions: In an information age, literacy demands not only the ability to read and write, but also the ability to process information and communicate effectively. Research suggests that reading proficiency increases with the amount of time spent reading voluntarily. Unfortunately, independent reading is often a casualty in our fast paced, media-oriented society. Todays students know how to read but have little or no interest in doing so. They have failed to catch the love of reading; therefore, they choose not to read. The adoption of Goals 2000 has made literacy an issue of national importance; therefore, a primary goal of the school library media program must be to create life-long readers. To become life-long readers, students must have . . . 1.) access to current, quality, high interest, and extensive collections of books and other print materials in their library media centers, classrooms, and public libraries;
Extractions: May 1997 ATSDR AND EPA Warn the Public About Continuing Patterns of Metallic Mercury Esposure Metallic mercury is a hazardous chemical that can cause serious health problems. Children (especially very young children) and fetuses are most vulnerable. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), part of the U.S. Public Health Service, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are jointly issuing an alert to the general public. There is a continuing pattern of metallic mercury exposure in children and teenagers and in persons using certain folk medicines or participating in certain ethnic or religious practices. It is important for the general public to understand that either short-term or long-term exposures to metallic mercury can lead to serious health problems. Human exposure to metallic mercury occurs primarily from breathing contaminated air. Other forms of mercury can be absorbed by drinking contaminated water, eating food (usually fish containing mercury), and from skin contact. At high levels, metallic mercury can cause effects on the nervous system and the developing fetus. Other forms of mercury can damage other organs. Even at low levels, metallic mercury can cause health problems.

Extractions: Wamego High School Library Home of the Red Raiders (USD 320 Board Handbook IFBD) "The principle functions of the library media centers are to process and circulate materials and equipment through an orderly procedure and to provide reference and other services to students and faculty. Media specialists should be committed to work toward excellence in providing students with resources so that they have the opportunity to achieve at their highest levels of performance. The collection shall reflect the broad interests represented in the district curriculum, complemented by appropriate, educationally oriented enrichment materials in a variety of forms. To meet recommended standards, the administration and board must support the development of a collection adequate to meet the curricular needs of the students. Such collections should be large enough so that materials can be placed in classrooms for extended periods of time, should be designed to provide for personal growth and should be adequate for those engaged in independent study. In keeping with Kansas State school recommendations, building principals and the superintendents of the district have the responsibility of leadership in providing a good library media program. In order to establish a quality library media program, there must be necessary funds and facilities according to the standards set by the state board, there must be qualified library media specialists available to schools and there must be a schedule that will encourage the use of the library media center by students and teachers."

Extractions: Remarks to Eisenhower Elementary School Secretary Cohen: Thanks very much. Pleasure for me to be here. I'm especially proud to be here at the Eisenhower Elementary School. Ike, of course, is one of all of our favorites. I don't have a button that Pat and Jim have on, but "I like Ike" as well as most Americans. But he was dedicated to education. He was not only a great military hero and President, but he was also the president of the university and had committed much of his life to the pursuit of education, especially for our children. And so I wanted to be here to promote the President's program and that of Secretary Riley back to school, get involved. Our military schools have unique problems and challenges in terms of being required to have children come to them. They might be here only for a year and these are the challenges that face all of the children of our military personnel who can be called upon to transfer every two, possibly every three years. Requiring them to get an outstanding education is one of our highest priorities and so this elementary school, I think we can see in a very brief tour, truly measures up to that. Education has always been a high priority for me in addition to having been a public servant in Congress. I also had an occasion to teach at the University of Maine for nearly six years. And so education has been a part of my life as well and something I put a very high premium on. But with that, I know you're anxious to ask other questions other than my commitment and that of the President to education. But we believe that educating our children in order to prepare them for the future is one of the most important national security interests that we have.
