During the 17th and early 18th centuries, first under its own central rulers and then later under clans from the main islands of Japan, a small ruling elite outlawed the possession of weapons by the general population. The secret study of weaponless fighting, or te as it was called, became one of the only means native Okinawans had to protect themselves from heavily armed warriors and brigands. It was during this time that Okinawans put their own stamp on unarmed fighting methods by emphasizing the use of the natural physics of the body and connection to mother earth to achieve high levels of power. Early practitioners spent a lifetime developing and organizing the technical skills needed to perfect elements of various foreign and native weaponless fighting schools. As time went by, the need and therefore the emphasis on fighting for purely reasons of self-preservation began to diminish. At the same time, practitioners of this pure fighting method began to recognize that many aspects of native religious and philosophical beliefs primarily from Buddhism and Taoism provided unarmed warriors with a level of mental peace and disconnection from worldly concerns needed to enhance chances for success during combat. Practitioners of unarmed martial arts realized too that the focused application of the art itself led the warrior to a greater level of self-awareness and inner peace. This melding of the outer, physical and inner, mental elements is what defines eastern martial arts.

He graduated with a Degree in literature from Tokyo Imperial University in 1881 and took a Philosophy Degree the following year. Apart from being the founder of Judo, Kano was also a leading educationalist and a prominent figure in the Japanese Olympic movement. When Kano began his study of Jiujutsu as a young man, the Jiujutsu Masters of the Martial Arts were struggling to earn a living. Although they were willing to teach the skills handed down to them over many generations, there was little interest among people of the succeeding generation. Additionally the demise of the Samurai (warrior) class had reduced the need for instruction. At the age of 18 Kano studied the Jiujutsu of the Tenshin Shinyo Ryu under Fukudo and Iso, both instructors at the prestigious Komu Sho. Following the death of Fukuda, Kano remained briefly with Master Iso before finishing his pupillage with Master Ilkubo. Ju - an adjective meaning soft, gentle. This word is taken from Taoist philosophy and embodies the opposite of hard, extreme or unreasonable. Hence the use of Ju in Judo does not imply soft (as a synonym of easy), but rather reasonable, efficient. Physical action in Judo is not meant to be easy (weak) so much as economic, by using the body to its best advantage and taking active advantage of any and all weaknesses the opponent may offer, so that maximum effect can be attained with maximum efficiency. Judo has also been described as a form of wrestling in which clothes are worn by the contestants. The clothes and belt (encircling the waist twice) allow for greater range of technique.

He arrived at this prestigious position in 1983 by virtue of his success as an athlete in competitive judo. Saylor had won the U.S. Heavyweight Championship three times and was a Pan American silver medalist. He had recently retired from the sport of judo after a serious shoulder injury sustained in the 1982 U.S. Judo National Championships. During his tenure as coach of the Olympic Training Center, John Saylor was exposed to some of the best judo technicians in the world. The leading judo teams from Asia, Europe and the Americas visited the Olympic Training Center regularly and John Saylor wasted no effort in observing their training methods and discussing judo technique with the world's top judo athletes and coaches. Not only did he work with the top judo people, Saylor worked closely with some of the top strength and conditioning coaches in the world who coached and did research at the Olympic Research Center or were visiting form other nations. John Saylor built on his already considerable strong base of grappling knowledge by this experience at the Olympic Training Center. He served as the coach from 1983 until 1991. However, before he left his position at the Olympic Training Center, Saylor began a more thorough and extensive study of "martial arts".

The club is situated in Cork city within 5 minutes walking distance from the city centre. We are primarily a Shotokan Karate club which also offers classes in Tai Chi Chuan but Martial artists of all styles are welcome to the club at any time. The club is well equipped for anyone wishing to take a class or train on their own and is open seven days a week . The main Dojo hall is available for training outside of the class hours and we also have a well equipped gym, changing rooms, showers and an outdoor training area . The Club is also available for use by non martial arts groups such as The Cork Dance Academy which began ballet classes for children and adults at the club in September 2000.
