Lezing Door Sensei Leon Pantanowitz problem of finance, since governments give money to olympic sports first, nonolympicsports second, and no money to traditional activities such as karate. http://home.planet.nl/~tamo/lecture_leon.htm
Extractions: Lecture by Leon Pantanowitz at the Okinawa Budosai '98 - symposium on the future of karate-do What is tradition? The definition of the word tradition is a "passing over" or "handing down" of some tangible material thing, from one generation to another, from father to son, etc., in its original form with no changes. The "handing down" or "passing on" of a tradition usually has two facets to it: the first being a transfer or teaching of the physical elements of the tradition and the second is the handing down of the oral tradition that compliments, fills in, explains and thus completes the physical elements of the first phase. Kata is a simple example that we can all recognise. The form of the kata is the physical aspect but would remain almost statuesque-like without the oral tradition that accompanies it, breathing life into the kata, giving it its timing, movement, focus, muchimi, chiru no chan chan and all its other innate qualities together with its traditional bunkai and self-defence usage, thus turning the "statue" into a martial art an art of powerful beauty. From its root beginnings, the tradition of Okinawan karate-do has been influenced by the philosophy of Buddhism and, in particular, Zen Buddhism, the essence of which is to deny the ego as an entity or as something that has real existence. Zen Buddhism emphasises the emptiness of things, e.g., the "kara" of the "te" or of the mind, and consequently the emptiness of the ego. Practising karate with the understanding that it is a form of "moving Zen", we train ourselves to gain control of it so that in a real "life and death" situation we will be capable of

"Hanshi Bowen in really among the elite," said Alex Semilof, a first-degree black belt at Bowens school. "This school is an incredible place. These are the famous words spoken by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the Modern Olympics. Since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, the Olympics has offered an opportunity for the world's youth to gather in the spirit of friendship and learn the importance of values that transcend differences in nationality, geography, and culture. Extractions: This FAQ has been derived from the official IOC FAQ for those items that we feel are most relevant to the sport of surfing. 1. What is the role of a National Olympic Committee (NOC) and how many are currently recognized by the IOC? A: Each "nation" has but one NOC. Although most the NOCs that are recognized are from nations, the IOC also recognizes independent territories, commonwealths (such as Puerto Rico), mandated territories, protectorates and geographical areas. As of February 2000, the IOC recognized 200 National Olympic Committees. Each NOC has the responsibility for governing Olympic affairs within its nation, including identifying, training, selecting, entering and funding an Olympic Team from that nation to compete in the Olympic Games. 2. What is the role of an International Federation (IF) and how many IFs are currently recognized by the IOC? A: The International Federations (IFs) for Olympic sports and those sports wishing to be considered for the Olympic program establish the eligibility and competition rules, set the schedule of events (which then must be approved by the IOC and the host organizing committee for the Olympic Games), and select and identify the referees, judges and other officials to "run" the sport. The IFs can also make proposals to the IOC concerning the revision or development of the events in its own sport, and recommend the addition or deletion of an event on the Olympic program. The IF is responsible for resolving all technical issues such as officiating disputes and recognizes only one National Governing Body (NGB) per sport in each country.
