Extractions: This interactive map shows the Maximum Contaminant Level violations for water systems in the Eastern U.S. for 1998 . Click on the map to see a closeup of a selected state. From the state map, click on a county to see the EPA SDWIS data for all public water suppliers in that county. We have also assembled a map of 1997 Southeastern U.S. water quality violations , and 1996 Southeastern U.S. water quality violations for systems with contaminates exceeding allowable levels. These are arranged by county and state. Sometimes plots like this can point to regional water treatment problems, or highlight problems with the quality of source water in a region. Existing problems can then be targeted by county and system and solved much more readily. We have based the map on 1998 data from the States' Division of Water and the Environmental Protection Agency because the data set is both reliable and relatively recent.

Extractions: Kentucky Women and Heart Disease: An Atlas of Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Mortality , a new publication from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and West Virginia University, features three heart disease mortality maps for the state of Kentucky. Women ages 35 years and older who lived in Kentucky during 1991 through 1995 were studied. Overall, a total of 29,501 women in Kentucky died from diseases of the heart during the five-year study period. County variations in heart disease death rates were mapped for all women, black women, and white women in Kentucky. The populations of American Indian and Alaska Native women, Asian and Pacific Islander women, and Hispanic women were too small to produce valid maps.

I can be reached at keithb@indiana.edu Water Science for Schools A site that is full of factual information about water. It also includes galeries of pictures and maps, each image accompanied by a text explanation of the image and often links for additional information. The links feature is quite useful and found throughout the site with cross links on many topics. The only part that I was a little disappointed in was the Activity Center, which consisted of various questionnaires to be filled out rather than activities related to water that you can carry out on your own. Overall, it is an attractive, well organized, easy to navigate site suitable for middle and high school level. Kentucky Earth Science Education Network (KESEN) This part of the Kentucky Geological Survey's site is designed specifically for K-12. KESEN has interesting facts about Kentucky geology with attractive graphics. The Earth Science Standards page has grade-level appropriate links to sites for various specific topics. There is also a listing of classroom activities for topics in Earth Science. Only a few are active at present, but those appear useful.
