Extractions: Boise Links National Engineering Week is February 17-21 , and The Discovery Center of Idaho is featuring three days of exhibits from local and state engineering and technology firms from the 19th-21st. INEEL/Bechtel is sponsoring this look at the many ways engineering touches our lives. INEEL will be featuring new technologies developed for use in national security programs, such as Homeland Security. Along with information on the engineering technology used to develop those projects; the engineers of INEEL will also be on hand with activities about engineering and information for students thinking of a career in engineering. Other companies participating in the three days of exhibits include Micron, Micron PC, Washington Group International, Boise State University and the University of Idaho, Boise Police Department, and CH2M Hill. All are expected to offer a variety of technologies and special demonstrations or activities. On Wednesday February 19th the focus will be on careers in engineering with special invitations having gone out to area high schools to schedule field trips during that day. Thursday the 20th has been designated as Home School Day from 9 AM-2 PM. That evening, DCI and INEEL are hosting a Boise Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours function. Friday, is Honored Citizen Day for senior citizens, and also for local law enforcement and emergency responders. Friday night the Discovery Center of Idaho will stay open until 8 PM so the general public can have a chance to see the exhibits.

In addition to contributing to the financial support of the Fair, the Center also rewards individual students who have done a superior job in creating science exhibits for the Fair. At the March 2000 Science and Engineering Fair, three optics projects, one at the elementary school level, one at the junior high school level and a third at the high school level, were judged outstanding by a team from the Optical Sciences Center.
