Extractions: Although many different groups constitute the KhoiSan peoples of Southern Africa, recognition by other people generally assumes a KhoiSan or Bushman oneness, namely the San with a particular hunter-gatherer identity. A well established visual imagery, largely constructed by non-San, sustains generalised notions of Bushmen identity. These notions are depicted in representations which can be divided in two major groups of images. The first is of a unique Bushman-ness, which is further often used to support ancient cultural claims. The second is that of a marginalised rural people of the Third World whose rights have been denied because of centuries of colonialism, apartheid and African Independence.

Extractions: When Jesse asks his dad why he has no brothers or sisters, Daddy declares that Jesse does indeed have a plethora of talented, beautiful and diverse brothers and sisters who live all over Africa. Jesse and his dad take turns sharing their knowledge of the Djerma who are known for their jewelry making, the Guere, skillful dancers, the Ashanti, weavers of beautiful cloth, and many other tribes. While affirming the strength of a positive bond between an African-American father and son, this picture book helps to expose young readers to African cultures of which even many adults will not be familiar. The colorful watercolor illustrations depict native African customs in a positive light, helping American readers to appreciate cultural differences. The pronunciation key, labeled map of Africa and author's note also make this a useful addition to any classroom library. 1998, Aladdin, Ages 4 to 7, $5.99. Reviewer: Michelle H. Martin Beginning in November of 1992 and ending in August of 1993, Dan Buettner and his brother Steve led a multinational, multiethnic cycling team on a trek through 14 of Africa's 52 countries. This book enables readers to tag along on the 11,855-mile adventure from the Mediterranean coast of North Africa to the southernmost tip of South Africa. Although these courageous explorers dealt with severe sandstorms, disappointing setbacks, unfamiliar foods, tropical heat, frequent illness, and warfare, Buettner also includes the simple African hospitality, the kindness of strangers, and the beauty of unspoiled scenery that they experienced. Readers will enjoy the real-life action of this cycling adventure and learn about the geography and cultures of Africa along the way. Includes a pronunciation guide, glossary, and index. 1996, Lerner, Ages 10 up, $22.95. Reviewer: Tim Whitney

This trip is timed perfectly to catch the best season for touring these areas. Duration: 17 days More Information Trip Name: Tea Horse Expedition Tibet enjoys fame as "The Rooftop of the World" - and the road from Yunnan to Lhasa is the toughest road in the world, offering surprising views and varied ethnic cultures along the way. This trip covers the 'must-sees' in northwest Yunnan and southeast Tibet. You will learn about distinctive cultures and religions on this trip. The ancient Tea Horse Road was once the main connection for the transporting of goods to Tibet and India from China. If Tibet is one of the relatively untouched areas of the world, then the eastern part of Tibet, bordering Yunnan Province, is the most untouched area of Tibet. Rich with virgin forests and crystal blue lakes, this formerly inaccessible route offers spectacular scenery as well as an opportunity to come in contact with the primary village cultures of Yunnan and Tibet. The long and winding drive on unpaved roads is very challenging and arduous, but this will be an unforgettable, once in your life journey.

I tillegg avslutta mellomfagsstudentane sitt distansetilbod våren 2001.

Extractions: Italian Ivan Quaranta clinched his first win of the 2001 Tour de Langkawi. The Alexia Alluminio rider beat a storming Jans Koerts of Mercury and Enrico Degano of Panaria in the last sprinter's stage before the TDL hits the mountains. Quaranta had been moving inexorably to his elusive first win of the Tour with a fourth place on stage 1, third on Stage 3, and second on stage 4. A finishing straight clash thwarted a possible win on Stage 5. Funnily enough it was also on stage 7 last year that Quaranta won his first of the 2000 TDL. The finish, at the end of a slow stage (average speed 40.88 km/h) featured a very serious crash within the last 100m, which resulted in several riders needing hospital treatment for broken bones and other injuries. Initial views of the TV footage suggests that Spaniard David Fernando Dominguez (Colchon-Relax) got into problems during the final stages of the sprint. Alexandre Usov of Phonak can be seen pushing the Colchon-Relax rider upright, and the next moment Usov himself was falling, bringing a few with him.

Extractions: The North American Free Trade Agreement January 1999 Implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) began on Jan. 1, 1994. This agreement will remove most barriers to trade and investment among the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Under the NAFTA, all nontariff barriers to agricultural trade between the United States and Mexico were eliminated. In addition, many tariffs were eliminated immediately, with others being phased out over periods of 5 to 15 years. All agricultural provisions will be implemented by the year 2008. For import-sensitive industries, long transition periods and special safeguards will allow for an orderly adjustment to free trade with Mexico. The agricultural provisions of the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA), in effect since 1989, were incorporated into the NAFTA. Under these provisions, all tariffs affecting agricultural trade between the United States and Canada, with a few exceptions for items covered by tariff-rate quotas (TRQs), were removed before Jan. 1, 1998. Mexico and Canada reached a separate bilateral NAFTA agreement on market access for agricultural products. The Mexican-Canadian agreement eliminated most tariffs either immediately or over 5, 10, or 15 years. Tariffs between the two countries affecting trade in dairy, poultry, eggs, and sugar are maintained.
