The documented history of Korea begins in the 12th cent. B.C. , when a Chinese scholar, Ki-tze (Kija), founded a colony at Pyongyang. After 100 B.C. the Chinese colony of Lolang, established near Pyongyang, exerted a strong cultural influence on the Korean tribes settled in the peninsula. The kingdom of Koguryo, the first native Korean state, arose in the north near the Yalu River in the 1st cent. A.D. , and by the 4th cent. it had conquered Lolang. In the south, two kingdoms emerged, that of Paekche (c. A.D. 250) and the powerful kingdom of Silla (c. A.D. 350). With Chinese support, the kingdom of Silla conquered Koguryo and Paekche in the 7th cent. and unified the peninsula. Under Silla rule, Korea prospered and the arts flourished; Buddhism, which had entered Korea in the 4th cent., became dominant in this period. In 935 the Silla dynasty was peacefully overthrown by Wang Kon, who established the Koryo dynasty (the name was selected as an abbreviated form of Koguryo). During the Koryo period, literature was cultivated, and although Buddhism remained the state religion, Confucianism : introduced from China during the Silla years : controlled the pattern of government. In 1231, Mongol forces invaded from China, initiating a war that was waged intermittently for some 30 years. Peace came when the Koryo kings accepted Mongol rule, and a long period of Koryo-Mongol alliance followed. In 1392, Yi Songgye, with the aid of the Ming dynasty (which had replaced the Mongols in China) seized the throne.

Korean writing systems (4th century a.d.), architecture, political systems, religions, and even musical instruments came from China. Koreans adapted these Chinese things and made them their own. Chinese scholars had devised a kind of printing system using carved wooden blocks. Koreans took this invention one step further and created the first world's first metal moveable type in the 12th century. Adaptation of foreign things for their own use is a historical characteristic of Korean culture, even today.

The beginning of Korean history is often dated to 2333 B.C. when King Tan-gun, a legendary figure born of the son of Heaven and a woman from a bear-totem tribe, established the first kingdom named Choson, literally meaning the "Land of the Morning Calm." While the historicity of the Tan-gun myth is disputed among scholars, it is known that ancient Korea was characterized by clan communities which combined to form small town-states. They rose and fell so that by the first century B.C., Three Kingdoms, Koguryo (37 B.C. - A.D. 688), Paekche (18 B.C. - A.D. 660) and Shilla (57 B.C. - A.D. 935), had emerged on the Korean Peninsula and part of what is now known as Manchuria.

The Republic of Korea was proclaimed on August 15, 1948. Left-wing groups had boycotted these elections, and virtually all the legislators were firm anti-Communists, as was their chosen president. Following is a treatment of South Korea since the Korean War. For a discussion of the earlier history of the peninsula, see Korea, history of. The political experience of the people of the Republic of Korea since 1948 has been varied. They lived under 12 years of Syngman Rhee's authoritarian rule, checked by the rise of a vocal opposition under semicompetitive conditions; nine months of liberalism under the cabinet system of Prime Minister Chang Myon that followed the student upheavals of April 1960; the 27-year rule by two military strongmen under a tight and effective presidential system that ensued after the military coup of May 1961; and a liberal democracy from 1987. The First Republic, established in August 1948, adopted a presidential system and elected Syngman Rhee as the first president. He was reelected in August 1952 while the nation was at war. Even before the outbreak of the Korean War, there had been a serious conflict between Rhee and the opposition-dominated National Assembly that elected him in 1948. The dispute involved a constitutional amendment bill that the opposition introduced in an attempt to oust Rhee by replacing the presidential system with a parliamentary cabinet system. The bill was defeated, but the dispute continued at Pusan, the wartime provisional capital, where the National Assembly was reconvened.

The Founding of the Korean People's Army - After consolidation his grip on the Party and administrative organs in North Korea, Kim Il Sung set out to raise an army. The Soviet Occupation Army was behind Kim's power and Kim's army was in line with the Soviet doctrine of 'power base of democracy' and his personal ambition of becoming the national hero who would unite the country.
