Extractions: The Capital-Journal By lighting seven candles, and observing seven cultural and community values with their families, millions of Americans will celebrate the seven days of Kwanzaa from Dec. 26 through Jan.1. Topekans will also have an opportunity to take part. A citywide Kwanzaa family celebration and dinner, free to the public, will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 28 at Maner Conference Centre at the Kansas Expocentre. It is sponsored by the youth organization Topeka Rites of Passage, the American Association of Retired Persons, and the Kansas African American Advisory Commission. "It's going to be awesome," said Larry Mack, director of Topeka Rites of Passage. "It's all about values, it's all about family; it's about having a foundation to build on." Mack, who has been involved in organizing local celebrations for the past eight years, discussed the significance of Kwanzaa in a recent interview. Echoing the words of social theorist Dr. Maulana Karenga, who created the holiday in 1966, Mack said that Kwanzaa is a celebration of family, community and culture. "Some people come out of curiosity, and then when they see it, they say, 'Oh, OK, I understand,'" he said.

Hull uses music as the tool to teach children about positive values, healthy self-image and most recently about diversity and peace. Kids Creative Classics offers parents and children an original, unique and entertaining approach to positive self-development and education for children by using entertaining songs, artwork and stories which remind them of their own creative power and teach them how they can each, in their own way, discover the wonder of life's possibilities. Hull does this by fostering an attitude which encourages children to believe in themselves and their dreams. "Every child needs to know the power they hold to make a difference in the world", says Hull. Subject to availability Bunny Hull schedules her "A Drop Of Peace" workshops for children ages 6-10 in groups of 20-40 at schools, churches, for children's groups and other special events. Extractions: to the Festivities of Kwanzaa Kwanzaa (KWAN-za) is a seven-day African-American cultural festival that is observed from December 26 to January 1. It is the only nationally celebrated, indigenous, non-heroic African-American holiday in the United States. During this time, families explore, share and celebrate the African-American community, their culture and their history. It's a time for black Americans to recognize their African roots, and honor the achievements of their people throughout history. People across the globe have observed Kwanzaa since 1966, when Dr. Maulana Karenga founded the cultural event. Dr. Karenga, then a professor at California State University at Long Beach, wanted to create a holiday about bringing black Americans together and strengthening the bonds between black people. When visualizing a holiday for the African-American community, Dr. Karenga was inspired by Kiswahili, the African language commonly known as Swahili. As the most regularly spoken language in Africa, Swahili represented a cultural and historical bond between African-Americans. Dr. Karenga named the holiday Kwanzaa after the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning "first fruits of the harvest." The extra "a" was added to the name in order to give the word greater impact.

But while I waited for Santa Claus to bring my presents on Christmas morning, my brother was celebrating Hanukkah in Jerusalem. His unexpected conversion opened doors for us that probably never would have been opened otherwise. While many families are torn apart by differing faiths, we learned how important and broadening it can be to understand different religions and cultures.

Kwanzaa was never mentioned in my hometown. I'm also not African-American sothis holiday wasn't mentioned in my home at all. Kwanzaa is a holiday that is a personal choice on whether you want to observe it or not because of it's political and racial undertones that can't be ignored ( which I briefly mention below .) Some consider this a holiday that celebrates racial strife. Others consider it a week of ethnic awareness. It's all depends on personal viewpoints. I scanned several websites. I spoke with some African-American friends and I also used the book referenced to create this page.

Extractions: Umoja (oo-MOE-jah), meaning "Unity" in Swahili, is the first of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, the African-American spiritual holiday celebrated in late December to honor black accomplishments and culture. Each principle represents a way for African-Americans, in particular, to empower themselves as individuals and as a community. It was Umoja that convinced Rodney Jordan, his brother and a friend to launch The Kwanzaa Information Center Web site in 1994. Since then it's not only become the premier site for African-Americans to come together and share the Kwanzaa celebration, it's become a resource for people of all backgrounds to learn about the black experience. "Kwanzaa is a source of reflection and inspiration," says Jordan, the site's operating manager. "For those who do not consider themselves of African descent, Kwanzaa is a time to truly educate themselves about the African contribution to the world." Jordan says the mission of the Kwanzaa Information Center site is to first educate African-Americans about Kwanzaa, then second educate the entire human family. Jordan believes that if America is to live up to its potential, then all of its citizens must strive to perform and interact at the highest levels. "Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration with living principles that reinforce and institutionalize the necessary ingredients for African Americans to provide that needed leadership," says Jordan. "The principles rooted in Kwanzaa are a foundation on which we can build."

Despite some common traditions, your child may be confused by other people's celebrations.
