Knit the season is disappointing
I totally enjoyed the first book in this series. .and liked the second.This third book, Knit the Season is really a disappointment. Too much time is spent recapping the events of the first two books, and there are senseless flashbacks to childhood events that have nothing to do with the story.I couldn't even finish it.I think the author needed to turn out a third book - and fast - for her publisher.And this trite and boring read is what we got.Too bad.Save your time and money.But do take a look at the first two books.The first book, especially, is a delight.

Makes You Want to Knit
I am a huge fan of Boboth The Friday Night Knitting Club and Knit Two so I had to read this one.It was not as good as the first two but I still would not have missed it for anything!If you are a fan of the series you wont be disappointed.I still needed kleenex for this one too.I hope there are more novels to follow this wacky bunch of friends. Not to mention I wish I had a group of friends like these!

Knit the Season- The Series Continues
I know I have read posts from other people who read different Christmas-themed books around the holidays, and the truth is, I always look at these books and intend to read them around the holidays. I check them out around the holidays, but the actual reading gets done a little bit later than that. I read Knit the Season by Kate Jacobs this weekend. This is the third book featuring Jacobs' Friday Night Knitting Club characters. I enjoyed the first book, and thought the second was not quite as good. The third falls somewhere in between the two. There is some closure for some characters who are able to find happiness, and yet the book leaves things open enough that another book could be published someday.


Dakota, Georgia's daugher is pursuing her dream to become a chef and has the possibility of working at an internship at a high class restaurant over Christmas break. Unbeknownst to her, her father has purchased plane tickets for them to fly over to Scotland to be with her great grandmother for the holidays. Catherine is in love with Marco, the sexy Italian she met while in Italy, who happens to be related to Anita in a roundabout way. Anita has almost settled into married life with Marty, if it weren't for her son, Nathan, who continually thwarts their wedding plans. Peri is still working on her Peri Pocketbooks and looking at different career opportunities. Darwin didn't receive a lot of mention in this book - certainly not a lot of plot for her.

Still the theme of friendship and loyalty rings out in this book, showing that even as years have passed, these women still find time for each other and share a bond that they credit Georgia (Dakota's mother) with. I enjoyed the different memories of Georgia that are included, making her feel like she is still a part of this story even though she is no longer alive.

Despite the fact that I didn't read this in December for the holidays, I enjoyed this book and reconnecting with familiar characters.

Not a stand alone book
This book is very thin on story.Maybe you have to read the other books in the series to enjoy it.I received it as a Christmas gift, so, I thought if I liked it, I would buy the others for myself.The thin story line of this in no way made me want to read the rest of these books.My Mom gets an A for effort on this one, though.I love knitting and reading, so, it was a great idea as a gift.It's a shame the book was so blah and lacking a good/interesting story.Reading this was like coming in in the middle of a boring movie, hoping it would get better and then it just ends, leaving you to realize it didn't get better and all you have is wasted time spent on this.So, so sad to end a book feeling so let down.

Fun holiday read
I love this series, partly because the first novel was one of the most touching stories I`ve ever read. I`m attached to all the characters and felt like I was catching up with old friends while reading. Since I read the first two books this one was easy, comforting, and familiar to get into. Although I don`t think this book was as good as the first two, I still think it`s a must read if you`re into the series. ... Read more

Best book ever on Fair Isle-Starmore is a genius
Back in 1988 Alice Starmore wrote Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting and it was considered one of the premier books on the subject. The book has been available through used outlets and Ebay, at premium prices, but now this fabulous book has been reprinted by Dover Press and is once again available at reasonable prices.(For editorial honesty, I own two copies of the 1988 version which I purchased, not realizing I already owned it, and I've purchased at least two others to give as gifts, and Dover Press sent me a copy of their new soft cover version.)

The Book of FairIsle knitting traces the history of FairIsle knitting and then Starmore proceeds to interpret it in a modern and wonderful way.There are many experts in FairIsle knitting and there are a lot of practitioners, and Starmore is the reigning queen.When I first took up knitting 20 years ago, I was blown away by this book and it inspired me to become a Knitter with a capital K.I thought if I could knit anything close to what was in this book, I would really be a knitter.

The updated version of this book has improved photos and those photographs show the beautiful colors Starmore has selected to put together.The colors just pop off the page and show her genius.She explains how to choose pattern bands to make your own designs and she offers many complete patterns for you to make yourself without designing.In addition, the book has a comprehensive section of techniques to actually knit the patterns or make up your own pattern in the fair isle style.The only draw back to this book is that the sizes are not very large, the largest finished size in the book is 47 3/4" or 122 cm. through the chest.If that is not a problem for you or those you knit for or you do not own any fair isle books this book is the one book every knitter interested in the topic should own.I think even if you need larger patterns, the section on designing your own will allow you to adjust her patterns.

I realize that knitting is a lot of things to a lot of people, experts and novices alike. And one never has to knit FairIsle to be a knitter, but the book is eye candy for the knitter and a celebration of the art of knitting. Ms. Starmore is at the top of her game with this book and this edition should open the eyes of knitters new to the craft since it was first published.It has brought me joy just reading the book.

Mixed Review of new paperback

This is a mixed review, not because of the book itself but because of the photo quality of the new edition. I used this book before the reprint came out (borrowed from a friend), and of course it is marvellous. The other reviewers are completely right. However, when I bought the new paperback reissue, I immediately realized that the color photo reproductions are completely off. Instead of the deep rich natural-looking colors of the original book (and Starmore's other books), this reprint has blaring, neon-ish, completely shocking colors. It's as if the printing shifted completely into the orange/yellow/red register and no one in production noticed it.

Maybe this is a glitch that happened on early print runs and has been eliminated. I hope so! Because it really mars an otherwise great re-edition of a knitting classic.

Still a great book, and still worth buying for the text alone. But if you are relying on the new paperback edition to see Starmore's colors, make sure to get an alternate reference. It's completely off.

Like painting with yarn and needles,,,,,
Over the years I had taken this book out of the library to study this fantastic art ,but since I had been studying ( and knitting ) mostly in top down knitting I had gone away from this fantastic art which I have dabbled in only for a bit thus far.

This summer ,while on vacation, we happened to get to a lovely fiber arts school on an Island (in Door County, Wisconsin) and right there standing up all pretty, proper and ready to read ,,,,,was one of my most * wished for * books of ALL TIME ~ Alice Staremore's Fair Isle Knitting) in soft cover!!

Now I have tried to purchase this book for 8 years ( since I started to knit) only to find that I could purchase this book * used* for a rate of about 200$$ or so~( e bay sources etc)

Nope, toomuch $$,,,,,,it was back to the library everytime I wanted information, that was a wee bit too high for my taste~

After knowing the incredible wealth of information that this book contains I purchased it right on the spot in that lovely little Fiber Arts shop and commenced to read it like a novel.
Page after page intrigued me all over again like a good mystery book!!! I had to have that book in MY HANDS that day!!!

There aremany reviews on this book already so much has been saidthat this book is THE source for fair isle knitting information of all time. No other book even comes close to this book.

Now the thing this book gets into that really has it over all the other " technique books" on Fair Isle is inspiration,,,,, and how to learn to "paint" ( as I call it) with your yarn and needles,,,,,how to * really* look at things from an artistic perspective vs a process perspective,so I started to do what the author suggested.( tho let it be known that information on process is IN the book too!)
I took pictures ,,,,and lots of them~

Next time we went to a different island ( Mackinac Island ~ upper Michigan) I hiked up about 1/4 mile to a site with colored pencils and graph paper.( Simple, I know,,no computer generated graphing,, I bet the farm they have programs like that but then again they have knitting machines too,,,)

It was there that I could see for miles and miles,,,clear blueshades of water and the colors of the horizon~
I looked at the shoreline of the mighty Lake Huron, and the various shades of the water,,,,even the sand and stones ,,,and now have come up with some colors that I think would make my " artistic sweater",,, and will commence this project just as soon as the yarn arrives.

Two handed knitting etc is all covered in the book and I know how to do it ( it really just takes a little practice, really!!),,but the section on planning color was incredible to me ,and well worth paying full price for the book rather than waiting to order it from amazon ( my usual way of ordering books for music or knitting)
I simply cannot say enough how very much owning this book means to me!
I DO feel like an artist with yarn and needles,,,,,, every bit the same way I feel with my bow and violin when I play music!
THANK GOODNESS it has been re printed or so very much of the MOST valuable information regarding this age old art would not be able to reach the hands of so many knitters today!

One thing to say on the subject of shaping or fitting a sweater,,,,if you love the fair isle look but tend to love a more fitted look, check out the "Ivy League" sweater DVD,,,,,, that gets you started in your quest for color and fitted form~ (if that is your preference of course)

My first attempt will be that garment ( in my own colors from my sketches ) and from then on I can work with what I know and create my own masterpieces.

One other note,,,,,Alice Starmore's " Aran Sweaters" is being reprinted also so if you are into texture, I think its due out this fall( 2010)
Another must if you ever intend to do work with cables etc~
Also check out her website as listed in the book ( virtual yarns) for some kits that frankly are not all that expensive,,,, (and its the real deal folks!)

I am smitten with this book ( obviously) and haven't seen a decent knitting book out in a few years ( barring Wendy Bernards knitting book, which I LOVE!)
I cannot plan fair isle from the top down as I shape my plain ( or textured ) sweaters but I can still use my knowledge of fitting to create a well fitted garment for me or someone I love! Just gotta think more about the vertical gauge a bit more ( which I did learn from top down knitting I may add)

GET THIS BOOK if you think you will * ever* be interested in this age old art!
I cannot recommend it enough!!!!!!!

This is one of my favorite Fair Isle books, both the techniques & the beautiful patterns. There isn't a sweater in this book that I wouldn't like to knit, the only problem is so many projects & so little time!Not for beginners, but once you have the experience this is THE Fair Isle book to get.

Great basics for knitting
This book provides clear visual and written instructions for many knitting basics. Great resource for a variety of basic knitting stitches and techniques. The patterns are limited, but very workable for the beginning knitter.

Best beginner knitting book ever
I have been knitting for about three months but I didnt feel that I had the knowledge to make great projects. I refuse to make scarfs and wash clothes so I needed something different for beginners. This book is full of projects including the basic scarf, shrugs, dog sweaters and more ALL FOR BEGINNERS. It teaches you everything you need to know how to start what type of yarn to buy and even how to fix mistakes. Not boring at ALL.

Guifde to Knitting
I found this book hard to follow the diagrams. As far as casting on, I had a friend show me a way that worked for me.The book only shows one way while stating that there are many ways. Would not recommend for a beginner. It almost squashed my desire to learn knitting.I am an avid crochet fan and have been so for over 30 years.

Great Directions, Great Photos
Authors Queen and O'Connell bring a fresh, new approach to teaching an old subject.This book starts at the very beginning, explaining needles, yarn, gauges, and basic stitches.With each additional step they teach, they give you one or more projects to let you try it out.They use a wide variety of yarns in their projects, giving you a good sense of what's available today.
In fact, if there was one thing I could complain about, it's that the authors used too many fancy yarns too soon.These ladies assume you have a top-flight yarn store in your neighborhood and you can afford to shop there.I didn't see one project that used yarn you could buy at national craft chains.In addition, the first two projects, a scarf and an envelope bag, require you to knit with two different-sized yarns held together.That's not something I would suggest someone attempt on their first two projects.Although I have to admit, the results are stunning.
Aside from that one caveat, this book is an excellent choice if you're just learning.The authors supply handy extras such as practical shortcuts and an entire chapter on how to fix your mistakes.Their goal is to give you all the information you would expect to get if you were taking a class in a yarn store.Whether you're a rank beginner, or just need to round out your repertoire of knitting knowledge, The Chicks with Sticks Guide to Knitting is an excellent choice. ... Strange Designs for Knitted Amigurumi
Knitting Mochimochi: 20 Super-Cute Strange Designs for Knitted Amigurumi by Anna Hrachovec is, well, it is different.The book contains 20 designs for knitted toys.I am entranced by the designs.In general they are small enough to finish in a very short time. The techniques are fairly simple and give the beginner practice using double pointed needles.In addition, there are many, many pictures of the techniques used to help ease the way.

Frankly, this book is definitely not a must have, but it is a lot of fun and if you are knitter who is looking for something different this might just fit the bill.

LOVE mochimochi land
I'm a fan of mochimochi land patterns in general, so when I saw there was a book I was pretty excited about it. I had a hard time choosing what to knit first, so many of them appeal to me enough to see myself knitting several... but I finally settled on knitting the pencil first. It's on my desk right now being absolutely adorable, and it was fun to knit too. Great book, designer/author does awesome work :)

Knitting Mochimochi rocks
I received my copy last week.I have knitted the No-Bite Bed Bug pattern.It is the cutest ever! The pattern is easy to read and follow.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves knitting cute little creatures.Knowing on how to knit on DPNs is a must.Can't wait to try out the other patterns.

A very useful and cute book
This book is full of great patterns for people who want to knit cute little critters for gifts (or for themselves).I love the color images inside, and the instructions are all clear and useful, and easy to follow.I could have done with more pictures occasionally, but it offers enough detail to let you make all the patterns without any problems at all.

I highly recommend this book.

MochiMochi doesn't disappoint
I was in a bookstore, and hadn't realized this book had been released yet, so I was very pleased to be able to buy it.I've already started on the Feet Eaters pattern (the main pattern on the cover of the book).

All of the patterns are incredibly cute, and the instructions for knitting said patterns are very clear, and concise. Lots of beautiful pictures to guide you along the way with construction for pieces that require it (such as the Feet Eaters).

Makes me glad I picked this book, instead of the one I originally went to the store to buy (which was *not* a knitting book)...

Good book for the money, and great patterns for toys and fun little things to decorate your home (or husband's desk at work) with. ... Read more

Buy the BOOK-- not the Kindle version.
While I absolutely LOVE the contents of this book, the Kindle version translates very poorly.
Photos are black and white, and after casting on Ysolda Teague's Orchid Thief Shawl, I realized the chart was so small I could barely make out any of the symbols. After wincing through Charts 1&2, I was relieved to find some errata with Charts 3 & 4 reprinted on Ysoda's blog. However, because everything is in B&W, I didn't realize there were color-coded pattern repeats and had to rip back several rows. :(
Other than that, I was an excellent read. Though I highly recommend purchasing the actual physical book if you plan on knitting any of the patterns.

Indie Knit Designers: Talents and Stories
Lovely book, love the stories that accompany each designer, interesting knitwear, several things I'd like to make.Only wish they would increase the size range, XL is not a 37" bust, just saying.

Nice!
This book has a nice mix of interesting projects - both large and small. The photography is lovely and to top it off, I loved reading the stories about the "mingling of knitters and the Internet." I would say that the Internet has had a major influence on my knitting, both in learning how to knit via little video clips and exposure and interaction with other knitters and designers.

Looming at its best
I have used the book a number of times. Put it down pick it up I know exactly what I am doing. It's just like days of our lives walk away come back 3 weeks later and you can figure out whats happening in a mater of minutes.

I Can't Believe I'm Loom Knitting
This is the nicest book; it has so many great projects I'm not sure which one to make first.

perfect for beginners
This a great starter book for loom knitting.Good instructions, and the sampler afgan works you through several knitting stitches from easy to advanced.

i can't believe i'm loom knitting
i love this book, easy to understand, well written, detailed instuctions and pictures makes it easy to follow and learn the stitches.i am working on the 12 stitch afgahan now and pleased with each block.i would recommend this book for the everyone.

Not for those that want patterns
Was looking through this book at my LYS & there's not a pattern in the book to be found. I'm not the only person that was looking at it & noticed that. LYS owner is putting it in the 1/2 price basket. Don't waste your hard earned $ on the book, save it for yarn.

Knitters take note!
This book is a great information source for knitters who want to expand their techniques.It is not full of patterns, which was a mild disappointment, but it provides well-written information allowing you to become the designer of top-down sweaters.

The one knitting book I would take with me to a deserted island.
This book changed the whole way I think about knitting. It taught me how to understand the structure of knitted garments, so now I can knit just about anything without following a pattern. What's more, everything I knit fits perfectly because I can try on as I go. Best of all, garments are knitted in one piece. Once Ibind off the last stitch, all I have to do is weave in the yarn ends and I can wear my new creation (although it's usually best to block large garments before wearing.). A must-have for anyone who wants to progress past knitting scarves!

wish I culd give this book 6 stars
This is the best knitting book I own or have ever seen.
Still, it is not for everyone.
It is not for knitters who like to knit row-by-row patterns.It does not have projects in it with type and amount of yarn and needle sizes.
It is not for knitters who like to knit panels and then sew them together.
It is not for knitters who do not like to shape garments to the body as they knit.

This book has no photos of finished projects because there is no need for those.The book is a manual.It tells you how to knit most styles of sweaters from the top down, to your own measurements, and in your own choice of yarn, color, and pattern stitch.Design your own, or pick a style from an illustrated knitting magazine or book. Then follow the very clear and cogent directions in this book to produce the design in your chosen size, knitting from the top down.You can adapt these directions easily to almost any pattern you buy, eliminating seams that the original might have.

If you are a beginner knitter, with little experience in clothing construction, you might find the instructions hard to comprehend, and may have to work at understanding something about how clothing fits the human body before it all makes sense.

The hat instructions, though, are simple even for a beginner.You can also knit leggings with the directions in the book. These would be simple projects.

Knitting a sweater from the top down is a liberating experience. It is easier to shape than kitting from the bottom up.As the book points out, you can try it on as it progresses.You can make it shorter if you find you are running out of yarn.You can knit & attach the sleeves early on in the knitting.And you avoid the tedious sewing of the seams when you are finished.

If you are a magic loop knitter, you can cast on using that method for some of the sweater styles.

I found the book to be well-written and easy to read and the instructions completely comprehensible.If you are used to following patterns, you might not, judging from the negative reviews here.

disappointed
Ms. Walker's wonderful books of knitting stitches set me up to be thrilled by her book describing this elegant and clever approach to knitting garments. One would presume that the intended audience would consist of moderately experienced and highly motivated knitters. Bizarrely, the author wastes many paragraphs crowing about the superiority of knitting from the top. Didn't I think so already? Why else did I buy the book? At first baffling, this quickly became annoying. Actual techniques, such as the essential invisible casting-on, are poorly described. (Surely we need to know where the yarn and the string are, not that our fingers should make a diamond.) In contrast, ample space is given to something as fundamental as how to multiply one's gauge by one's desired size to give the proper number of stitches. While, if I grit my teeth and plow through, I think I can eventually figure out the techniques, it should have been easier and far more pleasant...

In addition to a judicious rewriting of the text, the book would be improved by more and better diagrams. ... Read more

This book is amazing
I adore this book. It's well written, hilarious and an enjoyable read. It's filled with stories, and easily adjustable patterns. It made me feel less like a loser for my hat turning into a towel. Thank you, Stephanie I loved it.

Argh...
I'm a brand new knitter and have been trying to make up for lost time and read everything I can get my hands on.So I ordered this book. It was inexpensive and looked amusing. I can't tell you how much I disliked this book. I kept waiting for it to get better and finally gave up towards the end. I have nothing against the author, but as a new knitter I want to learn how to knit. I do NOT want to become a knit evangelist nor a neurotic yarn stasher. There seems to be a time for knitting and a time other things. I'm just really not sure why the author wrote this book.

do not buy this book for a kindle
The drawings disappear, and the charts are miniscule. Buy it in paper if you expect to make use of it.Talked to Amazon Kindle support unit about the problem of disappearing drawings but they were unsupportive, and placed the blame on the publisher. No ideas for how to rectify the problem.

Ok, some good formulas given
I checked this out from my local library.Because of this author's popularity, the little things she says are taken for gospel and the good word spread throughout the land.

Well, I think she helps to perpetuate the snobbery against man-made fibers.Her melt test goes into great detail.But really, if your house is on fire, go get the baby and leave the burning OR melting blanket behind already.

Along these same lines, even though she does a great job laying out the modern landscape of knitting, i think she really goes through specific efforts to classify sister yarn crafts (aka crochet) as sort of hippy-dippy attempts that are lesser than knitting efforts (see the "organic class of knitter").

If you like knit-centric yackity, then buy her books.They're cute.But do look for them at the library first before spending your dollars.

Elizabeth Zimmerman Knitting Workshop
As a fan of Elizabeth Zimmermann, I found her book to be most informative and certainly full of humor and down right common sense.

A classic must-have for knitting designers

Engaging reading.
Ann Hood writes from the heart. Whether or not you are a knitter, this story will resonate with anyone who has ever been part of a small, supportive group of women. Each woman's pain and promise develop as the story unfolds, confirming my belief that no one can know what goes on behind the closed door of another person's life.Well written, it is a gift that Ms. Hood resumed her writing after losing her precious daughter.

The Knitting Circle
I've always been a huge Ann Hood fan, and enjoyed her novels from way back. Until I read this one.While it's absolutely devastating Ms. Hood lost her young daughter, and went through such a life shattering tragedy, I'm not sure writing about the experience, through one of her characters, was such a good idea.As a mother and person, I'm sure it was cathartic, but as a novelist...?

Strong women, comforting words
I lost my only child at 20 six years ago.True, you never "get over it", but you do learn to live with it and the hole in your heart doesn't feel rough and raw all the time.So, over the years, I've looked for books that would mirror my thoughts, words, actions, feelings and behaviors during that first hellatious year.Ann Hood does it in this book and in her memoir, "Comfort".I was completely validated.It was so good to know I wasn't permanently crazy, but crazy like all grief stricken mothers.I read this book a year or so ago and bought this one for a newly saddened friend.I think it's one of the best.

the knitting circle, follows mary baxter in her grief after her young daughter dies from meningitis.the book starts with mary going to a knitting store owned by a woman named big alice, five months after the death of her daughter.she is not sure why she is there, except that her mother, an aloof and seemingly-never-present woman had been calling her, 'once a week offering advice.' she'd told mary that what she needed is to learn how to knit.big alice gets mary started and invites her to join the wednesday night knitting circle.

like the red thread, this book alternates chapters between mary's life and stories of the individuals in the group.just like all married couples have their own complexities and issues, so does every knitter.each has her or his own sadness, heartache, or tragedy to contend with.the knitting, while easing the pain with the repetition and comfort of lovely wools, also helps bind the people back together, as well as forming a circle of friendship.

the characters in this book are interesting, warm, compelling, and tragic.my only complaint was the (a?) denouement with mary's mother.it's one thing to have some reconciliation in a hospital scene, but this was just too much.other readers may find it heartwarming and believable, but it just made me groan. that aside, i liked the book very much and would recommend it.

Perfectly Titled
Knitting in Plain English is perfectly titled.I have tried to learn to knit before but I gave up, because I never really understood it.Ms. Righetti writes in a way to clearly show you what you are doing.She sometimes explains something three different ways so that you will likely be able to understand it in at least one of them.She includes both Continental/European style of knit (yarn in the left hand) and British/American (yarn in the right hand).She is positive and encouraging the whole way through.I think I'll keep this book forever.

Knitting with common sense!
Excellent book by Maggie Righetti! She manages to present knitting in a step by step logical and straight-forward way. She covers techniques from simple to advanced in a way that you can reconcile her instructions with what you already know, and even if you knit in an uncommon style you can use this book to learn from.Something that is not always true of other knitting books.

The tips on tailoring and finishing are ones that every knitter should read, and help you understand that, no, sometimes it can be the pattern.Something that knitters can sometimes be afraid to believe.

I wish that I had run across this book years ago.There are many things that a beginning knitter can take away, and even more that an advanced knitter can learn from the long years of experience she shares in this book.

I will recommend this book to every knitter I know.

Knitting Patterns Revisited
I had this book and several others by Barbara G. Walker years ago, and I'm glad to be able to find them again--they are the clearest and easiest-to-use of any instruction books I've ever seen.

A Treasury of Kntting Patterns
I love this book.It's like knitting porn!I love to page through and look at the different stitches!I am fairly new to knitting and I find the instructions easy to follow.

Love it
I've been disappointed by stitch dictionaries before, so I wasn't sure about another one especially at it's price.But it's become my favorite stitch book in less than a month from receiving it.Not only are the patterns super easy to catch on to, but she gives a little bit of information on each one.Which for me helps when I'm designing something, and I'm not sure what it is exactly that I'd like.

I know some don't like the fact all images are black and white.But they're very clear and well done, and imho better because you aren't enticed by the yarn rather than the stitch itself.I prefer it, however if you're considering this book, and that's a drawback, you can easily see a color photo of the stitches at the Walker project being done on-line.If anyone asked, I'd highly recommend this book for any knitting library.

I plan on collecting the rest of her books.I don't think you'll find a better dictionary of stitches anywhere else.There might be one just as good, but not better imo.

Very Pleased With This Book.
I almost hesitated buying this Treasury of Knitting Patterns based on some reviews that the pictures were in black and white. I was prepared for grainy poor pictures of the knitted work. While the pictures are in black and white, they are clear and show what the patterns look like knitted. I have other pattern books, including The Harmony Guides which I like, but this one has become my favorite. I will be purchasing more Barbara Walker books. I am a decent intermediate knitter. Far from expert and probably never will be. I plan to find this book very useful in the future.

knitting both socks at same time
I made socks years ago and enjoyed doing it. But now at69 and with arthurtis in both hands, trying to use three or four needles at a time was truly painful.In trying to find some good patterns to use I found this book and it is just wonderful.I'm almost done with a pair of knee Highs for Christmas gift.It was very easy to learn the two needle method in the round.The ease of using this method is great and the patterns are quite nice.This book is well worth the money spent for it. The instruction and pictures are great.

What a waste of an afternoon!
I actually went to the author's class before checking this book out of the library.I've knit socks on DPN's for several years now, but was intrigued by a way out of the 2nd sock syndrome.I've literally spent nearly 8 hours straight trying to understand this. I almost had it once then ended up with both circular needles tied in knots literally. I thought I was going to have to cut the socks off to get the needles loose.I even tried just doing one sock using this so called "magic loop" method and it was ridiculously hard to avoid doing something that can so easily be done on DPN's.Guess the old way was the best way after all.So much for new technology.Thank goodness I didn't waste my money on this waste of a tree.

I should have checked reviews for this book FIRST!
After buying a different book full of errors and unclear pictures, I checked this book out of the library. What a difference! I got to read a book that covered necessary topics and explained things in an understandable way with beautiful photos and lovely patterns. After seeing her 2nd book at the library for toe-up knitting as well, you can bet that these two will be PERMANENT additions to my sock-knitting library ASAP!

Working with socks knit 2 at a time
This is a nice little book with really excellent instructions for knitting two socks at a time using 2 circular needles. There are some valuable hints and tips on dealing with needles and wool and about half a dozen sock patterns using lace, ribbed and beaded stitches.But my initial disappointment with the book did not fade when after more careful perusal I found that the did not include instructions for knitting the 2 socks from the toe up.

Nice little projects, fair price
I bought this used, and am grateful for the price though puzzled by its lowness. The directions are fairly clear while those that aren't I was able to figure out after some trial and error. The projects themselves are interesting and as stated, highly portable - always a plus for someone who frequently finds herself on the sidelines at the pool for swimming lessons, Scouts, and the doctor's office. I just wish that the yarns pictured weren't frequently either out of my price range, or out of production.

A few UNUSUAL items makes this a worthwhile small-project book
This book advertises "your favorite authors" by which they mean "designers" and they are certainly well-published ones like Prudence Mapstone, Marcelle Karp, Stephane Japel and Hannah Fettig. The projects include gloves, hat, scarves, handbags, socks, slippers and a baby sweater and even earrings. The fun stuff includes a fedora and fishnet stockings, and well, maybe the leaf-shaped earrings, though I am not a fan of knitted jewelry, myself. Some projects involve felting, which will please those who love this type of craft, or for someone not willing to lay out extensive cash to knit a large felted item, only to find out it doesn't felt quite the way you'd like. Here, you can test it out on a smaller scale.

Small projects are my favorite thing for trips and just to slip in a purse in case I have to wait at a doctor's office or for some other reason. Scarves are great for gifts, as are baby sweaters, so small projects have their place in the knitting universe. And they use up small bits of yarn in your stash. I always have a few small things on the boil, and I'm sure you'll like this book as much as I did. ... Read more

Afghan Patterns
Lovely patterns in this book.Some very complex.Working on the Aran Afghan pattern now.It won't be done soon, but it will be heirloom worthy.

Another Great Book From an Inimitable Designer
Louisa Harding does it again. She has an inimitable style to her designs and I love her patterns.In this book she has mittens, a satchel, hats, a lovely pillow and a tunic that I like.She also uses buttons in very creative ways in several of her patterns.Instructions for the patterns are clear as well as instructions for techniques used in the knitting of the designs (e.g. short rows).

The patterns are mostly for intermediate to experienced knitters though there are one or two, such as the pillow,for the experienced beginner.

I would enjoy knitting several of the patterns, find the patterns to be clear and easy to follow, and would use the book as a resource.I recommend this book for any knitter's library.

Neat designs
I have to admit that I will probably never make most of the projects in this book.Not because they aren't cool or pretty, but because they are a bit too time-consuming and/or technically difficult for me.But that won't stop me from looking at the pictures and drooling.

Simply Amazing!
This book completely wowed me! From the moment I opened its cover, I loved loved loved it! The patterns are beautiful and feminine in a classy way. The photography is gorgeous, and the colors are stunning. After I'd kept my library's copy for several weeks, I realized I was never going to return it, so I bought my own.

I admit that I bought the book entirely for inspiration and eye candy. As someone else said, the patterns are intermediate at the hardest, so they're not much in the way of skill advancement. Besides, I'm the sort of person that never does a pattern straight. I always alter something to better suit my tastes. None of these patterns are constructed exactly as I'd like: I'd never knit anything flat and sew it together if it could be done in one piece. However, even considering all that, I can already anticipate this book being the most inspiring pattern book I own, and I own a bunch.

Although it's already been done, I want to go over the sections and highlight the things that I found notable about each. The patterns are timelessly gorgeous, or so I thought anyway. I was very surprised to see them called trendy by other reviewers. It's true I'm young (twenty-something), but I've always considered my tastes very classic. I'm probably more a product of my generation than I think. :) C'est la vie. Here are the sections.

Electic + Quirky: Just as the name says. I love the use of randomly sprinkled buttons, embroidery, and other embellishments. The patterns as pictured are heavy on pink and and baby blue, which will look great to those with a cool skin tone (like me). I especially love the Cecily Beanie (with all the buttons) and the Betty Wrap, which does lace with big needles and chunky yarn -- a delight.

Textured + Modern: Heavy on cables. This section has really innovative designs. A purse is knit horizontally. A tunic has a dramatic cable that travels diagonally from shoulder to opposite hemline. Probably one of my big favorites from this book is the Belle Scarf & Wrap. The scarf is framed with seed stitch and stockinette cables that make an undulating, uneven edge, and the middle is flanked by columns of double yarnovers. Knit it on bigger needles and it becomes a wrap. This section is almost entirely done in a metallic blue and is photographed on a sparse-looking beach -- very modern minimalistic.

Pretty + Feminine: My favorite section. Lots of lovely lace. None of it is very hard as lace goes, but it's always arranged so artfully that the finished result is quite stunning. I love everything here, but the Catherine Purse, Juliet Scarf, and Diane Cardigan especially impress me. This section has softer colors and is photographed indoors for a very feminine feel. It also has the finest gauge yarns of the whole book.

Traditional + Folk: Excellent for those who like colors. They're all fair isle, and three out of the four look intricate enough to keep an intermediate strander busy. I'm not much for color knitting so I go for the Mary Beanie (the simplest in terms of colorwork). Again, a lot of pink and purple, though the Emma Hat is shown in camel, olive green, and brown, which should appeal to the warm skin tones.

Finally, I should address the quality of the instructions. Again, since I tend to modify, I don't notice instructions as much as some might. However, I'm halfway through the Belle Scarf (with a horseshoe lace insert instead of a center cable) and so far, everything has been very easy to understand. All but the simplest patterns have diagrams and charts. In most cases, duplicate written instructions are also provided.

As for the book itself, it's typical of Interweave Press: Layout is beautiful and uncluttered; font is easy to read; pictures are great. What more can a knitting addict ask for? ... Read more

Paris, Milan, London … Cleveland? Yes, it's true. For decades, this Midwestern city of grit and steel remained at the forefront of American fashion. Cleveland was home to such garment makers as the Ohio Knitting Mills, which created knitwear designs for department stores from Sears to Saks as well as for hundreds of labels, from Van Heusen to Pendleton.

Author Steven Tatar discovered a treasure trove of mint-condition knitwear and patterns for men and women when he acquired the mill's archive in 2005. Now, working with the original patterns, from the 1940s through the 1970s, he has painstakingly adapted 26 colorful knitwear projects for the home knitter.

The majority of the patterns are for classic mid-twentieth-century women's sweats, from 1956's Abstract Expressionist to 1976's Puppy Love. But there's much more in The Ohio Knitting Mills Knitting Book: men's sweaters like 1954's Father Knows Best, as well as dresses, shoulder bags, ponchos, and scarf sets. Clear directions, supplemented by schematic charts and color guides, make all of the patterns easy to follow, for everyone from beginners to more advanced knitters. For a Younger Crowd than I
I fell for this book based on a blogger's review.Of all the patterns in it, there are only a couple that I could see myself knitting. The history of the factory, etc., though is very interesting and I did enjoy reading that.The designs are quite youthful, so if you're a young knitter you may find them appealing.

Ohio Knitting Mills Knitting Book
This is a book of history and a book of knitting patterns.The author, Steven Tatar was looking for raw materials for his sculptures and happened across the archives of the Ohio Knitting Mills.That archive contained about 5000 original knitted garments.He sold them online and in New York City but he also worked with knitters and knitwear designers to document his most amazing find.He also researched the history of the Ohio Knitting Mills and presents his findings as introductions to the garments, ordered by decade from the 1940's through the 1970's.

Having grown up in the Cleveland-Akron area in the 50's and 60's, I was surprised to learn that Cleveland had a thriving garment industry.While not in the league of New York City or Paris, Cleveland did produce many garments supplying national stores and labels. For those interested in history and vintage knitwear, this is a wonderful document about a fashion-conscious middle-America in the mid-20th century. For hand-knitters, this book can be a great taking-off point for re-creating vintage garments with a contemporary twist.

I have this book from our library, and, I think it is something for a home bookshelf. The historical point of view, with a pattern interpreting a style is just my kind of thing.One may want to make every one of them.A beginner knitter, actually, I've made a few and am in the shawl ministry for a year, can appreciate the history:My mother has a few knit skirt/sweater outfits from the 1940's. There is a page of labels in the back of the book. The models are cute, too. from the 19 FYI: There is one Lion's Brand pattern using fisherman's yarn, a woman's turtleneck with Vanna yarn embroidery. Great book.If you are in the shawl ministry, consider buying a knitting book of stitch patterns and perhaps an knitted edging book.I agree that one may have to familiarize oneself with different yarns than what is sold at the national chain stores.I mean would that bag be the same if not done in Uruguay wool?... I don't know about the washability of the wools in the book, so maybe.There is also a Patons and Classic Elite yarns, some Italian filatura.There are a lot of people probably who like to look at patterns for crochet and knit, and, may not keep up with projects.This book is one that has reading.

Not what I expected
The book is the history of the Mill and the people who worked there. It shows many of the classic sweaters they made commercially on the machines there over a 40 year period and have patterns in the book that update and now make those gems available for home knitters to enjoy making. There is little care in letting us know what size the yarn is they used which is always a shortcoming to me. You have to diligently swatch with several yarns unless you are lucky enough to find the only yarn that is listed.
The sizes show that, as usual, the designer considers all people to be small framed and only one of the mens sweaters even has a chest measurement of 49 1/2 inch. The rest are much smaller.Wish they had done a bit more work on the patterns they published instead of just the history of the plant, but that's just my opinion.

Mr. Rogers had an amazing mama...
because she knit him all of his sweaters! i had no idea of this wonderful fac until I found this book. Filled with historical detail and incredible modern renditions of patterns from the past, The Ohio knitting Mills Knitting Book is a real find. My infamously picky husband loved the men's styles and I fell hard for the easy, classic(but never boring) women's patterns. i can't wait to knit up something fabulous for Rhinebeck! Gorgeous!
