Extractions: The first mainland Mississippi lighthouse was constructed at Pass Christian in 1831 simultaneous with a similar light tower placed at Cat Island. These beacons were necessary to aid schooner traffic between New Orleans and Mobile to make tourist stops at the antebellum hotels of Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Biloxi, Ocean Springs and Pascagoula. The Biloxi Lighthouse, constructed of cast iron in 1848, continues to stand tall on U.S. Hwy. 90 at the beach front.

Lighthouses: FAQ When were the first lighthouses built in the us? Some lighthouses have as many astwo hundred steps! twentythree lights along the gulf coast and killed the http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0800631.html
Extractions: Almanac Cool Stuff Architecture Source: The United States Coast Guard Our first lighthouses were actually given to us by Nature. Sailors sometimes used landmarks such as glowing volcanoes to guide them. In the Ancient World, trading ships were eventually built enabling navigators to sail long distances to buy and sell goods. In the days of wooden ships with sails, the wind and waves could easily push them against the rocks and wreck them. And so, the need for lighthouses as warning signals arose. Today we call people who study (or are interested in) lighthouses pharologists. The name comes from that famous lighthouse. What is a lighthouse? It is a tower with a bright light at the top, located at an important or dangerous place regarding navigation (travel over water). The two main purposes of a lighthouse are to serve as a navigational aid and to warn boats of dangerous areas. It is like a traffic sign on the sea. Do all lighthouses look alike? Although we often think of a lighthouse as a tall, white conical tower, there are many, many variations of design. Depending on its location, it might be tall (where the land was very flat) or short and squat (where there was a high cliff or rocky coast). It could be square, octagonal (with eight sides), conical (like an ice cream cone upside down), or cylindrical (like a very fat pipe). When the lighthouses were built, they were constructed with whatever materials were most readily available. They were designed to fit the local geographic and climatic conditions. Some are made of stone; others brick, concrete, wood, steel, cast iron, and even tabby (a mixture of shells, lime, sand and water).

Tall Towers Of Iron the Fifth Auditor of the Treasury and the pinch penny supervisor of us lighthouses. decidedto use cast iron for three taller towers needed on the gulf coast. http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/lighthouse/types/earlyiron.html
Extractions: Cast iron is an alloy of iron with carbon and silicon which can be cast into any desired shape in molds. It was invented in the seventeenth century, but it was not until the later part of the eighteenth century that it became possible to cast sheets of iron large enough to assemble into buildings. As a material for constructing lighthouses, cast iron had many advantages. It is light in weight. When properly assembled, it is watertight and weathers well, even in a salt-air environment. Cast iron lighthouses, prefabricated offsite, can be quickly assembled by relatively small crews of workers. If the lighthouse is threatened later by beach erosion, it is relatively easy to disassemble the tower and reconstruct it at a safer location. The first cast iron lighthouse was built at Swansea, Wales, in 1803. However, it was many years before cast iron began to be used in lighthouse construction in the Americas. In 1841, a cast iron lighthouse prefabricated in England was built at Morant Point in Jamaica. In 1846, the British completed the Gibbs Hill Light in Bermuda, a 117-foot cast iron tower that remains in service today.
Louisiana Lighthouses gulf coast lighthouses (coastlights.com) Posted by Lowell Thomas, this site Lake PontchartrainArea lighthouses West Rigolets 1855 can be seen from us 90 where http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/lighthouse/la.htm
Extractions: This listing shows 16 lighthouses for Louisiana. Only 5 are active and none are currently open to the public. Little or no information seems to be available on the Internet about many of these light stations. I have deleted listings for the Point au Fer Reef Light, Timbalier Bay Light, and Oyster Bay Light; the best information is that these light stations off Louisiana's south coast are no longer in existence. Definite information on the fates of these light stations would be very welcome! There is no statewide lighthouse preservation society in Louisiana, although there are many lighthouses in need of preservation. In fact, there are 7 Louisiana lighthouses on the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List . One of them, the Franks Island Light, was apparently lost in 2002. The good news is that preservation efforts have now begun for at least four historic towers, at Madisonville, Pass Manchac, Port Pontchartrain, and Sabine Pass. Many of these lighthouses are rarely visited and poorly known; I would be happy to have reports from visitors. My thanks to John Kulba for a very useful report of his visit in early 2003.
