Product Description
This timely volume discusses the extent to which the labor market is becomingmore flexible in response to competitive pressures and examines the pivotal roles of collectivebargaining in introducing this flexibility.

Providing detailed information from 22 country studies, the book covers industrializedand developing nations across Western Europe, North and South America, and Asia.It analyzesthe extent of flexibility introduced in these labor markets, as well as the changing role of the statein industrial relations, and the positions of employers and trade unions on labor marketflexibility. This comprehensive study reviews the move toward flexibility in four principal areas:contracts of employment, pay, working time, and work organization.

While closely examining the means of achieving greater labor market flexibility, thishighly topical book addresses the various ways in which flexibility has been introduced, including through legislative action, collective bargaining, individual contracts of employment, and unilateral employer decisions. The findings in this book reveal that collective bargaining isthe most effective means of introducing flexibility, as it engages both employers and workers inthe process of change.

In addition, the volume examines the outcomes of negotiations on flexibility at thecentral, sectoral, and enterprise levels, paying special attention to the trade-offs that arise, particularly in the areas of job security, working time, and workers' lifestyles. ... Read more

From the supplier: A public choice model is presented to determine whether states employed branch banking during 1930 to 1933. This period was chosen since much of pro-branching legislation was passed during this time, with about 20 states passing bills concerning branch banking. The model correctly predicted 29 out of 39 states that adopted this legislation.

From the supplier: Nation's Bank and Bank of America are two of the larger banks to sign an agreement with insurance companies to support proposed legislation allowing banks to establish interstate branches but limiting the insurance business of banks. The American Bankers Association has not yet taken a position but the Independent Insurance Agents of America back the agreement. Although the new law would allow interstate banks to open branches across the states, state governments would retain the right to decide against the law within a three year period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb analysis and well written
This book provides an in depth analysis of how corporations die or give up the ghost. It is extraordinarily readable, well researched and entertaining, and I couldn't put it down-- which for a legal research book had certainly never happened to me before.

If you have ever wondered what happens to a company or a corporation when they liquidate, dissolve or go bankrupt, this book explains it all for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars The final stage
An interesting combination of legal requirements and practical commentary on the final stages of the life of a company - the liquidation.Although only a small book for its genre, it seemedto cover every aspect I had ever experienced as a non practitioner and plenty of those I had not.Easy to read and understand.Probably not for the expert but strongly recommended for those seeking a practical guidance of the process under US laws. ...
