Extractions: Trauma Surgery Family physicians are trained to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide variety of ailments in patients of all ages. These primary care doctors place special emphasis on caring for entire families on a continuing basis, using professional consultations and community resources when appropriate. Family practitioners complete a diverse training program that includes surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics and geriatrics. One such program is the Central Maine Medical Center Family Practice Residency Program. Some family doctors complete additional training and gain certification by the American Board of Family Practice (ABFP) in a subspecialty. However, to do so, they must first be certified by the ABFP in family practice. Several family physicians who practice in Central Maine Medical Family facilities are certified by the ABFP in geriatric medicine, a subspecialty concerned with the provision of healthcare to older individuals.
