Terracotta Clues (1 day) The Migrating Jing (5 days) Abstract The geography of cities, particularly planned cities and capitals, are valuable historical documents that can be read to reveal what was important to a society, how the society saw itself in the world, what its priorities were and what it feared. This information can be seen both in the location chosen for cities and in the actual layout of the city plan. Cities are created by humans. Therefore city possess, in their location and design of their buildings and streets, a human logic. Decoding that logic gives powerful insight into the minds of the people who built these cities. This unit explores methods of reading cities that are applicable to ancient Rome, imperial China, modern Boston and any city of any time or place.

Ch3 But there is as much contrast in maine's municipalities as there is in its geography. Mostof maine's cities are located on the state's major rivers. http://www.memun.org/resources/Public/HTML/Publications/LocalGovtBk/ch3.htm
Extractions: Chapter 3 Types of Municipalities The geography of Maine varies from the rocky coast to the vast valleys to the mountain ranges. But there is as much contrast in Maine's municipalities as there is in its geography. Its communities vary greatly in terms of population and in land area. For example, the busy harbor city of Portland has more than 60,000 residents, and the small town of Centerville has 19. And the city of Ellsworth covers over 84 square miles, more than 40 times the size of Maine's smallest community, Randolph. Geographical location had much influence over where settlements were located in Maine and how much they grew and prospered. Portland and Searsport prospered as commercial centers because of their deep and safe harbors. Most of Maine's cities are located on the state's major rivers. In the early days these waters provided the only source of power for industry and were a transportation link with the sea. The availability of other natural resources was an important factor in determining where settlements were made and how they prospered. Some had rich soils for farmland; others were near vast forests for logging operations and the manufacturing of forest products. Communities located near mountains, lakes and ocean beaches have thrived through the years as vacation and tourist centers. This has been particularly true in more recent years as transportation has improved. Adequate transportation has always been a key factor in the development of Maine communities due to the state's location. This statement can be supported by the fact that in the late 1970's more than 70 per cent of Maine's population resided in a corridor 20 miles on either side of the interstate highway system, which runs from Kittery to Moulton. In contrast, more than 40 per cent of the land area in Maine, mostly in the northwest section of the state, is inhabited by only about 6,000 people. This area is in the form of unorganized townships. It has no local government and is supervised and taxed directly by the state. About half of Maine's approximately one million citizens live in communities of 5,000 or more population.

The largest of the New England states in area, Maine, in 1820, was the 23rd state to join the Union. The most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi River is appropriately called the "Pine Tree State", as 90 percent of its land is forest. Maine forms the northeastern corner of the United States. West Quoddy Head is the country's easternmost piece of land. Along the famous rock-bound coast of Maine are lighthouses, sandy beaches, quiet fishing villages and thousands of offshore islands. Jagged rocks and cliffs, and thousands of bays and inlets add to the rugged beauty of Maine's coast. Inland, there are sparkling lakes, rushing rivers, green forests and towering mountains. Maine's Acadia National Park is the only national park in New England.

These regions are cultural units rather than governmental units formed by history and geography and shaped by the economics, literature and folkways that all the parts of a region share. What makes one region different from another? A region's multicultural heritage as well as distinct demographic characteristics like age and occupation also make regions different and special. Within several regions, language is used differently and there are strong dialects. There are also differences in outlook and attitude based on geography. E-Texts Megalopolis The Bypassed East New England New England has played a dominant role in American history. Until well into the 19th century, New England was the country's cultural and economic center. The earliest European settlers of New England were English Protestants who came in search of religious liberty. They gave the region its distinctive political format town meetings (an outgrowth of meetings held by church elders) in which citizens gathered to discuss issues of the day. Town meetings still function in many New England communities today and have been revived as a form of dialogue in the national political arena. New England is also important for the cultural contribution it has made to the nation. The critic Van Wyck Brooks called the creation of a distinctive American literature, in the first half of the 19th century, "the flowering of New England." Education is another of the region's strongest legacies. The cluster of top-ranking universities and colleges in

Extractions: census population estimates text menu What is a population estimate? The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program (PEP) produces July 1 estimates for years after the last published decennial census (1990), as well as for past decades. Existing data series such as births, deaths, Federal tax returns, medicare enrollment, and immigration, are used to update the decennial census base counts. PEP estimates are used in Federal funding allocations, in setting the levels of national surveys, and in monitoring recent demographic changes. A methodology reference accompanies most of our population estimates offerings. How are estimates different from projections? There is not a distinct dichotomy between population estimates and population projections, but there are some differences in time reference and derivation. Estimates usually are for the past, while projections typically are for future dates. Estimates generally use existing symptomatic data, for example, (births, deaths, migration), collected from various sources. Projections must assume future trends for fertility, mortality, and other demographic processes. At the Census Bureau, the population projections use the latest available estimates as starting points. In our current product offerings the user may see both an estimate and a projection available for the same reference date, which may not agree because they were produced at different times. In such cases, estimates are the preferred data.

Extractions: census population estimates ... text menu In addition to the Nation, the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, PEP produces estimates for census regions and divisions, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, and metropolitan areas. Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.
