American Cities THE CENTRAL CITY THE SUBURBS THE NEW URBANISM ASSESSING THE AMERICAN CITY We're coming, finally, to a sequence of four portraits of the world's humanized landscapes. That's what human geography is finally about. You could say that we're looking at pattern now, rather than process. Or you could say that we're looking at the visible consequences of all the activities we've been tracing. I want to begin with American cities, because they're the places we know best. What comes to mind with this topic? One thing is downtown, that cluster of skyscrapers that immigrants first saw from the decks of liners coming into New York's harbor. Now we mostly see downtown through a car or plane window, but it still grabs our attention. Around it, there is the huge penumbra of suburbia: freeways, arterial streets, curvilinear residential streets, commercial strips, a carpet of houses with backyard pools, and a scattering of bigger buildingsshopping centerss, college campuses, hospitals, stadiums, warehouses, and factories. Those are the tangibles. There's something else, too. Maybe it's excitement. Maybe it's fear. Maybe it's a sense of a world with nothing worth doing or seeing. Maybe it's some of each.

No more than a page per city should be necessary. We are looking for the reason thei city was founded where it was; what its relationship is/was with the surrounding area (situation); if this has changed since its founding, how and why. I do not need to know the Chamber of Commerce hype. You are to choose 2 cities from the list at the right and analyze the city's site and situation. You will need to look at a variety of maps(see below) and both zoom in and zoom out to look at the city's physical features (site morphology) and its relative location and hinterlands (situation). I have emphasized location, site and situation in class. You should know what they are by now, but just in case: Site: This extends the location description to include the ground a town occupies. The physical features of the landscape favor the placement of towns. It also allows for classifying towns according to physical features: rivertowns, gateways, natural resources. Site can also include the street layout, the demographic patterns and city functions or zones.

"The New Geography" By Joel Kotkin former 3Com CEO, lives on a farm in maine. new economy has loosened the traditionalrules of economic geography. of urban structure, in which cities are ringed http://www.newgeography.com/IndustryStandard_review.htm
Extractions: I t's hard to guess where business will go these days or why it will go there. Bob Metcalfe, former 3Com CEO, lives on a farm in Maine. Meanwhile, real estate developer Wes Christian is riding high in central-city Houston, where a downtown revival ignores the city's lack of a conventional downtown. And Richard Holcombe runs his software firm in Raleigh, N.C., a once-sleepy backwater where he can now pick and choose programmers from a deep labor pool. The changes taking place in the new economy tie these fellows together, but no simple cause-and-effect can account for their varied stories. It is not surprising then that research connecting high tech and geography is scarce. With The New Geography, journalist and think-tank habitué Joel Kotkin takes the plunge with a comprehensive look at how cyberspace is reshaping physical space. He introduces us to the vanguard of America's transformation whiz kids, new-media managers, bootstrapping immigrants and analysts who figure out what it all means and provides a snapshot of what is really happening on the ground as the industrial era wanes. Kotkin begins with the uncontroversial premise that the new economy has loosened the traditional rules of economic geography. The concentric model of urban structure, in which cities are ringed by suburbs and separated by farmland, no longer holds. The emergent geography, however, lacks form. It is governed by networks and connections, not location.
"The New Geography" By Joel Kotkin rural places such as Burlington, Vermont, Boulder, Colorado and Camden, maine, whichhave is at his best in describing the renaissance of older cities such as http://www.newgeography.com/Henton_review.htm
Extractions: H ere is a book that should be required reading by every regional steward in America. Joel Kotkin, a senior fellow at Pepperdine University who writes a monthly column on "Grassroots Business" for the New York Time s, make the strong case for why place still matters in the digital world. His paradoxical message is: " The more technology frees us from the tyranny of place and past affiliation, the greater the need for individual places to make themselves more attractive." Kotkin colorfully illustrates his point with a rich range of interesting examples from communities across America. What matters today is talent, quality of life and an entrepreneurial environment, not low costs and access to raw materials. Kotkins law: Wherever knowledge workers cluster, in small towns or big cities that is where wealth will accumulate. Knowledge workers want good places to live. So places better get busy trying to create livable communities attractive to knowledge workers. Kotkin points out two trends that reinforce this urban renaissance. Immigration has transformed the landscape of most America cities. According to Kotkin, this has been a good thing- adding to the talent pool, creating urban vitality and promoting cross-cultural trade. A second trend has been the rise of creative services and the emerging cultural industrial complex in cities. He makes the case that "The cultural intensive nature of knowledge value production draws on a different, often younger, demographic base that is more attracted to a distinctly urban environment."
