Extractions: home a-z index contacts help What is a serial? Any publication issued in successive parts and intended to continue indefinately is considered a serial. Serials include almanacs, abstracts, annuals, bibliographies, periodicals (magazines and journals), and newspapers. What distinguishes magazines from journals? Magazines are for general reading and contain articles on various subjects. Journals are the publications of associations or societies and contain accounts of activities, recent developments, and research in specialized fields. When are periodical and newspaper articles preferable to books? Their advantage lies in timeliness and brevity. They may be the only source for topics of recent concern or for research in rapidly changing areas of knowledge. What are the Library's resources and policies regarding serials? The Library subscribes to approximately 2005 periodicals, 855 non-periodical serials, 34 newspapers, and 14 digital subscriptions. Titles are located to correspond with the courses taught on each campus. Business, nursing, pure science, and social science are concentrated in Portland. Education fine arts, applied science and selected Maine newspapers are at Gorham. Material may be sent from one campus to the other for use by serious researchers.

The library assembles, preserves and makes freely available material that will encourage lifelong learning as well as meet informational, cultural and recreational needs. The library maintains a carefully selected collection of popular, practical and informational books, newspapers, magazines, audiobooks, and videotapes. The town of Pittsfield financially supports the library, making all library services available to Pittsfield residents and taxpayers. People who are not residents of Pittsfield may use the public library. To receive full borrowing privileges, they must pay a membership fee of $25 per family. The towns of Burnham, Detroit and Palmyra have reimbursed this fee for their residents. A preservation program has begun for the library building. Masonry was cleaned and bricks were repointed in the rear of the library. The storm and primary windows for the basement and side rooms were repaired or replaced. The windows were painted the original color, "black watch green". Funding for this project included $20,000 from the Maine Historical Commission and $5,000 from the Maine State Library through the New Century Community Program, both matched with town funds.
