My project I believe will be a combination of written items derived from the data I plan to obtain, along with some pictorial items. Due to the fact that the topic of underwater marine archeology is tremendously broad, the concentration of my research will come from various shipwreck sites. For myself the interest in this subject arises from curiosity about previous generations of people, along with an interest in the sea. Presently I have obtained various web sites that pertain to this topic. As I continue with my research I plan to find more detailed data as to the purpose, interest, and necessity for archeologist to explore this underwater realm. Extractions: Release Date: December 19, 2000 Fugro Seastar Supplies Precise Differential GPS for Underwater Archeology Expedition in Black Sea ABERDEEN Fugro SeaSTAR supplied differential GPS (DGPS) equipment and service for a recent underwater archaeology expedition led by famed explorer Robert Ballard in the Black Sea. In September, Ballards team discovered the remains of a 1,500 year old wooden ship and a possible ancient habitation site beneath the Black Sea off the northern coast of Turkey. The Fugro SeaSTAR system served as the primary aid to navigation for the research ship RV Northern Horizon, which served as the primary expedition platform. "The satellite-based DGPS service played a critical role in achieving the high levels of positioning accuracy needed to support the underwater research," said Ian Padgham, sales manager for Fugro SeaSTAR. "This was especially important for the Black Sea, which is not covered by shore-based DGPS beacon broadcasts." Ballard reported that the astonishingly well-preserved ship, dating to the Fifth Century A.D., was discovered in the "dead zone" of the Black Sea, an oxygen-starved area located below 200 meters. Three other shipwrecks were found at depths of about 100 meters. The expedition also investigated underwater sites of possible habitation, possibly pre-dating the Biblical flood.

Extractions: A three-week expedition in response to Ankara Universitys request for the University of Haifas cooperation this summer in conducting underwater explorations off Urla, a city some 35 kilometers southwest of Izmir, led to surprising discoveries. One such find might be termed the cargo remains of a 5th century BCE bulk carrier. Israeli and Turkish underwater explorers wade into the deep. The Universitys logo is clearly visible on the oxygen tanks At the same time we tried to understand the possible elements which are now positioned under water, whether they were originally terrestial or underwater constructions. We, at the University of Haifas Maritime Institute, have had plenty of experience in both fields, especially harbor constructions and underwater geological research. Thats why they called on us. The Universitys Institute of Maritime Studies and the Dept. of Maritime Civilzations have for a number of years been conducting wide-ranging coastal and underwater excavations along Israels northern Mediterranean shore: in the ancient harbor of Caesarea, at Tel Akko (Acre), Tel Nami, and the shipwrecks at Maagan Mikhael and Dor (Tantura).

This action was one of the most remarkable events in naval history as it was the first example of a submarine successfully sinking a ship in military action and was an accomplishment not achieved again until World War I, approximately fifty years later.

Extractions: Background: Imetrix provides advanced remote control underwater intervention products and services to the marine transport, offshore oil and gas, marine archeology, DOE (both hydroelectric and nuclear), DOT (MARAD, US Coast Guard) and DOD (US Navy). Imetrix brings to the underwater workplace an integration of technologies that provide field-proven solutions for robotic inspection, survey, imaging, mapping, navigation and maintenance. Imetrix applies this unique technical capability as an inspection / survey service. Our inspection process is proven to be more accurate, reliable and more cost-effective (minimally invasive and reduced risk) than human intervention (diver) methods. Technically complex tasks of "fusing" multiple sensor information to produce an accurate and repeatable record of structural condition is now possible with the Imetrix process of inspection. Dam Inspections: Figure 1 is an illustration of the Imetrix dam inspection / survey process. The Imetrix process of inspection employs propritary remote intervention technology, consisting of precision underwater navigation, 3-dimensional dynamic positioning control and data fusion software. Accurate and repeatable underwater inspection of the "wet" face of dams is conducted without the need for human intervention. The inspection is conducted by a remotely operated underwater vehicle (
