Over 100 marine scientists work in the Departments of Botany , Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental and Geographical Science , Geological Sciences, Oceanography , Surveying and Zoology, many of them full-time researchers sponsored by outside funding organisations. Oceanography is the general term applied to the scientific study of the sea. Marine Biology, Marine Geoscience, Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Coastal Engineering and Sea Surveying are all thus specialisations within the general field of Oceanography. All marine related activities at UCT are co-ordinated within the School of Marine Science The University of Cape Town does not offer a major degree specialising in Marine Biology (in fact no such degree is available in South Africa). The solution of many important problems will depend heavily on research involving marine biologists. Topics such as the greenhouse effect, the biodiversity crisis, and environmental preservation have activities rooted in marine biology. Florida Tech's subtropical location and proximity to mangrove, reef, lagoonal, and high-energy beach systems make it an ideal place to study marine biology. The department offers related degree programs in Aquaculture and Ecology. Some students elect to register in dual degree programs. Started in 1971, Florida Tech's marine biology program was one of the first of its kind in the United States at the undergraduate level. The program includes specialized courses in biology and oceanography to provide the knowledge and skills needed for the study of marine life. Emphasis is on the diversity of marine organisms, their characteristics, interrelationships, and interactions with the marine environment. In addition to required and elective courses which include laboratory and field studies, there are many opportunities for additional experience through volunteerism, professional clubs, research courses, campus employment, and internships.

Extractions: Type of Activity: A combination of hands-on, inquiry lab, group/cooperative learning, and off-site activity. Target Group: High School environmental studies (Jr.and Sr.), but could be modified for middle school. Background information: This activity involves visiting a study area 2 or 3 times. The students are required to write a report after the last visit including what is listed below. Prior to the report, students spend two to three periods in the field, and usually an equal amount of 45 minute periods back in the lab doing identifications of specimens and the calculations that are required. If students are sincere, this information may become part of a database for your community or state. Preparation time Preparation time varies depending on the student level, class chemistry and backgrounds, the equipment you have, and the proximity to the study area. It could take 5 periods or longer to prepare the students. Materials needed: Parental permission slips, transportation to and from work study area, life jackets if students enter the water, waders, meter sticks, testing equipment for oxygen, salinity and pH, seines, plankton nets, secchi disks, jars or zip lock bags to put specimens in, line level and 100 ft. line, Beaufort's scale, compass(es), notebooks and field guide book for mollusks, fish, birds, etc. Aerial photographs and topographic maps may be useful on site or in the classroom to "see" nearby influential factors.

Extractions: Richard Ellis is well known as one of the foremost marine illustrators and experts, and this book, covering every species of whale, is an example of this. There is tons of information in here, on all whale species, and everything is complimented by excellent black and white illustrations, and color paintings of selected species, by Ellis. Ellis is a great writer as well, so overall his books are some of the best marine biological tomes available, and are easily digested by anybody. Dolphins and Porpoises by Richard Ellis. Retail: $35.00. Amazon price: $28.00. Pbk. In this companion work to The Book of Whales (the two books succesfully cover all cetaceans), Ellis presents us with another excellent book. Every dolphin and porpoise species is covered in great detail, and throughout are illustrations, and a section of beautiful color paintings of certain species. The book also gives a nice chapter on basic dolphin and porpoise biology and behaviour, and relations to man. This is probably the best work on the subject. This major provides coursework and laboratory and field experience in both marine and freshwater sub-disciplines. UCSB is ideally located for the study of fresh and salt water environments and inhabitants. The campus' outdoor "laboratories" include the Pacific Ocean and four of the University of California's protected natural land and water reserves: the Carpinteria salt marsh, the West Campus sand dunes, Santa Cruz island in the Santa Barbara channel, and the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research laboratory in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range. The campus' Marine Science Institute (MSI) involves faculty and graduate students from six academic disciplines in worldwide research in areas such as global environmental change, biological oceanography, subtidal and intertidal ecology and polar tropical, and temperate ecosystems.
