Extractions: Contact: CDC, Division of Media Relations CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care." The grants cover a range of subjects, including prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, genetics and home, workplace and recreational injuries. (See complete list attached.) Activities include centers of excellence in prevention research, research projects to inform public policy, and research investigator training and development. The average grant is approximately $250,000. Most projects are funded for three years.

The first International Walk Our Children to School Day on October 4 seeks to help reverse this trend, and will highlight the benefits of childrens walking and bicycling to school as a way to promote health and the benefits of making communities more pedestrian-friendly. David Satcher, Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary for Health of the Department of Health and Human Services, will help kick-off this years event as he joins a group of children on October 4 th walking to the East Silver Spring Elementary, Silver Spring Maryland. Yet, the National School Boards Association (NSBA) estimates that nearly three million incidents of crime occur on or near school grounds each year. In an effort to address issues of school violence and the emotional health of students, more than 500 educators, school health professionals, and mental health experts from around the world will meet in Denver, Colorado, on September 16-18, for the Fourth Annual Conference on Advancing School-Based Mental Health. Extractions: The School Library Media Program (SLMP) is a specialization housed within the overall M.L.S.degree program offered by the College of Information Studies of the University of Maryland. Students in the specialization (1) earn the M.L.S. degree and (2) receive the educational preparation necessary for certification as a School Library Media Specialist by the State of Maryland. This arrangement ensures that graduates have the widest possible employability because they have both an ALA-accredited M.L.S., which qualifies them for positions in all kinds of libraries, and eligibility for State certification, which attests that they have the specialized knowledge and skills required to work within the public education system. The CLIS program is accredited or approved by all appropriate national and state agencies-including the American Library Association (ALA), the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the Maryland State Department of Education. While there is no direct reciprocity for library media certification in individual states throughout the country, the CLIS program generally meets or exceeds the certification requirements for library media personnel in many other states. Graduates of the SLMP work in all levels of education in Maryland and the surrounding region and in localities across the United States.

The mission is accomplished by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats; providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing and using information and ideas; and working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students. (Information Power, p. 1) This is the mission statement that I gave my administration when asked what is the purpose of the library. I needed this statement to show my administrators why the library is such an important part of the school. We as library media specialists are not people who just sit and check out books. Though we may not deal with students seven or eight periods a day, we do have many "chores" to do. When school started last year, I went in to visit my new principal. She told me that I was the third administrator of the school. I finally found someone who realized the work it takes to run a library media center. The administrative functions of the school library are often done behind-the-scenes but are essential to the operation of the library. The library must serve teachers and students to its fullest and it is your responsibility to make that happen. There are communities where the school library is the only library in town. Are you prepared to serve the community as well as the school?

Sponsored by HC DrugFree a coalition of parents, schools and county agencies the discussion delivered a warning: Howard County kids are having unprotected sex and are getting pregnant and many are contracting STDs, said Kathy Siltanen, charge nurse at the Howard County Health Department's Teen Clinics. Siltanen told attendees that a cross-section of Howard County kids from every high school and socioeconomic group are seen at her clinic. "Everybody has this attitude of 'not my kid, not my county,'" said Laura Smit, coordinator for HC DrugFree and the Coalition for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention. "I think that kids also feel powerless going against the mainstream media, which is sexualizing everything. And that's where the silence of the parents [comes in] if you don't say anything, then you're letting the media teach your kids," said Smit. Parents seeking advice on what they should say to their children were told to be clear about values, talk early and often with children, and be an active presence in their lives. Do not be afraid to say what you feel, said Anne Anderson Sawyer, instructor in Human Sexuality and Women's Health at Howard Community College and a CAPP volunteer. Scariest to some parents was the idea that some kids divorce the act of sex from love and relationship. "Oral sex is so big [now]. They don't consider it sex, they really don't," Smit said.
