Secondary Mathematics Education For more information about teacher certification in maryland, consult the marylandState Department of Education certification and Accreditation page. http://www.math.umd.edu/undergraduate/majors/UG-Ed.shtml
Extractions: As of Fall 2001, all students seeking certification for Secondary Mathematics Teaching must be enrolled as a Mathematics Major and would usually be expected to complete the Second Education Mathematics Major Track (although they could as well complete one of the other Mathematics Major Tracks). The student must also be enrolled in the secondary Mathematics Education program of the Curriculum and Instruction Major. The demand for qualified teachers of mathematics in middle schools and high schools is very high. By studying to obtain a mathematics teaching certificate at the University of Maryland, you can make yourself highly employable, and be prepared to make an important contribution to many people. At the same time, concerns continue to be raised at the highest levels of government about the qualifications of the people who are teaching mathematics. For instance, in the 1999 State of the Union address , the President said: ... many teachers lack even a minor in their main teaching field. Additionally, students in schools with the highest concentrations of poverty those who often need the most help from the best teachers are most likely to be in classrooms with teachers who are not fully qualified. [I propose to:] require states to adopt competency tests for new teachers, demonstrating subject matter knowledge and teaching expertise;

Extractions: The Missouri Council on Economic Education (MCEE) was invited to speak at the signing of economic education legislation by Missouri Governor Bob Holden. The Governor is a member of the MCEE Advisory Council and a former Trustee. The MCEE authored the legislation which calls for a major study of economic and personal finance education in the state for K-12 students. Passed by the Missouri House 130 - 11 and by the Senate 30 - 0, the bill is the result of new collaboration between many groups promoting economic and/or financial education. Governor Holden Signs Economic Literacy Bill In January, the Missouri Coalition for Economic and Financial Literacy was formed with about twenty organizations participating in a meeting called by the Missouri Bankers Association. A legislative subcommittee led by the MCEE was charged with drafting legislation as requested by participating legislators. The result was a bill that asks for recommendations on changing school funding, amount of economics and personal finance included in the curriculum, teacher training, teacher certification, testing, and to create an outline of a course required for high school graduation. To date, the MCEE has raised $65,500 of the $100,000 required for the study. Operation Outreach Makes Use of Talented Teachers The Economic Advocate program of the University of Missouri-Kansas City center's Operation Outreach has been functioning at high speed. One of the most rewarding and yet time consuming projects has been a collaborative effort to help edit and support the development of a module written by Jennifer Ernat, Hamilton, MO, to help teachers assess student progress toward the economic content standards of Missouri's statewide assessment. The module is in the field testing stage now and will eventually be posted on the Operation Outreach website at

Registering for Classes Students interested in receiving financial aid need to plan accordingly. For those in the Accelerated MBA Program, this means pre-registering for all courses they intend to take in the semester's modules. Stafford Loans Request Financial Aid Transcripts. Contact the Financial Aid Office(s) at each previously attended college/university and request these forms to be sent to the MSM Financial Aid Office, Emmitsburg, MD 21727. This step is required regardless of whether aid was received at the prior institution(s) or not. Complete Stafford Loan Application. First-time borrowers must complete a Master Promissory Note and a Stafford Loan Certification Form, both of which are available by calling the Financial Aid Office at (301) 447-5207. (Students who have borrowed previously in the Federal loan program should contact their prior lender and request a loan application.) Completed applications should be sent to the MSM Financial Aid Office. Once the Master Promissory Note is on file in the Financial Aid Office, a student may request additional funds for any ensuing semester by submitting another Stafford Loan Certification Form.
