Higher Standards for Teacher Certification Under the new certification system, advanced professional certification renewal occurs at five-year intervals and requires: an individual professional development plan that specifies coursework (at least six semester hours) or approved equivalent workshops and other professional activities to be completed during the five year period; and satisfactory or better performance ratings in at least three of the five years. The Committee report envisions all learners using computers and telecommunications systems as tools of learning. Professional Development for Student Performance The Maryland School Performance Program has given a new focus to professional development directed at school improvement. The State Department of Education has provided School Improvement Leadership training for hundreds of teachers, administrators, and members of the school improvement teams required by the MSPP. The training, which has focused primarily on low-performing schools, helps team members set improvement goals, use data to identify school problems, and find school improvement strategies. The Department has enlisted the support of local school systems by setting up, and providing training for, local Technical Assistance Support Teams to monitor school improvement planning.

Many credits earned in this program may be applied to a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction or Reading.
