Extractions: Published in The Boston Globe It is no secret higher education faces a crisis recruiting and retaining technology and engineering students. The Wall Street Journal has reported that 40% of freshmen starting on the road to becoming technologists drop out to pursue other fields. The article went on to suggest academia needs to consider how we motivate this new generation of students. I counter that the answer is not found solely in motivation, or making academics more exciting, engaging, and rewarding for these college students, although such efforts are underway in many engineering schools, in particular. The solution lies in changing how we prepare students as early as possible by building the proper foundations in math and science during their K-12 years. Without this foundation, it's no wonder these 40% quickly become frustrated with their studies, fall behind, transfer to another major, or ultimately fail to meet the institution's academic standards. The sad truth is, despite our teachers' best intentions, the priorities given to math, science, and technology in our public schools are sporadic at best. Typical graduation paths in our high schools feature four-year English and social studies requirements augmented by a good range of elective programs, varying somewhat by school district. Yet, according to a survey conducted by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), in most states science and math are relegated to a two- to three-year requirement. This must change if we are to have any meaningful success in retaining students in engineering or technology programs, or even just reducing the number of freshmen students requiring remedial math and science courses.

Extractions: Faculty Retention on a Shoestring By Marc A. Pitman The Faculty Retention on a Shoestring research project was initiated to identify simple organizational characteristics and environmental considerations that schools could implement to improve their faculty retention at a relatively low cost. This research was not meant to find a boarding school temperamentthe ideal personality, intelligence, and skill set that flourishes at boarding schools. Rather, it was intended to bring to the surface the best practices of schools with optimal retention in order to help schools leverage those things they are already doing well and to suggest areas for possible improvement. The research consisted of a survey mailed to more than two hundred ninety boarding schools. The survey had a very strong 20 percent response rate. Normal response rates to mailed surveys are reported to be 1-2 percent. Respondents included fifty-nine schools from twenty-two states in the U.S., two Canadian provinces, and one country in Europe. Follow-up phone calls and visits were conducted with some of the respondents. A Common Purpose Based on this research, the most common characteristic in schools with optimal retention appears to be a common purpose among the faculty. Niche, fit, and common values were words commonly used by schools with optimal faculty retention. These schools attracted and retained faculty that resonated with the schools values. This clearness of purpose also seems to help faculty members who do not resonate with these values either seek another school or not seek a position in the first place. The results seem to indicate that schools can increase faculty retention, at times significantly, by clarifying institutional mission and values.

Extractions: Academic Freedom in Elementary and Secondary Schools Some of the most contentious battles over intellectual freedom are fought in elementary and high schools, where the protections of academic freedom are often much weaker. James Daly, Patricia Schall, and Rosemary Skeele (2001) write in Protecting the Right to Teach and Learn: Power, Politics, and Public Schools (Teachers College Press): Preserving academic freedom is our common cause. Everyone has the right to learn in an environment that is open to multiple possibilities and perspectives. No individual, group, or political body should be able to restrict these rights.(p. 1) Even the opponents of academic freedom endorse its name, as when a Louisiana law claiming to protect academic freedom tried to compel public school teachers to teach creation science.(Edwards v. Aguillard, 1987) A similar approach to academic freedom is used in this essay: Teaching Darwinism and Creationism: Academic Freedoms Foes Squelch Darwinisms Critics b y Catherina Hurlburt: http://www.cwfa.org/library/education/2001-08-23_evolution.shtml
