" Laws, or "Acts and Resolves" as they are called in Massachusetts, are published as the state legislature, the Massachusetts General Court , passes them, so a criminal law may be listed right after a real property law. The session laws are assigned sequential chapter numbers, i.e., "Chapter 1 of the Acts of 1998" is the first law passed in the 1998 session, which are NOT equivalent to the chapter numbers appearing in the statutory codes "Acts" are more permanent and general in application than "Resolves." "Special Acts" are acts aimed at a particular individual or group of individuals, and do not have wide applicability. "Special Acts" may not be included when the session laws are codified. Extractions: Not long ago the politically correct Boston Globe noticed a "shocking" new trend. It seems as if some citizens of Massachusetts were so fed up with crime that they have begun to intervene in petty street crime afflicting the streets of our cities. Thieves and pickpockets in Massachusetts should exercise caution in where and how they ply their craft as the chances that vigilantes pummel them and drag them to the nearest cop are definitely on an upswing. While the Globe is shocked at this healthy trend, students of the law should note that both a statutory and common law basis for a certain degree of "vigilante behavior" is well founded. Indeed, in an era of lawlessness it is important that readers be advised as to their lawful right to protect their communities, loved ones and themselves by making lawful citizens' arrests. The purpose of this essay is to simply explain the law and the historical context of the citizen's arrest. First, what is an arrest?

Extractions: By Pat Vaughan Tremmel It is illegal in Michigan to use vulgar language in the presence of a woman or child. In certain parts (but only certain parts) of Maryland, it is a crime to tell someone's fortune. West Virginia's anti-flag-burning statute consists of a full page of dense legalese. In the District of Columbia, you can be punished more severely for burning down your own house than someone else's. A new study by a School of Law professor highlights such absurdities, inconsistencies and confusion in our nation's laws in a rigorous examination of all 52 American criminal codes and a detailed scoring system ranking their performance. Paul H. Robinson, the study's author and the Edna B. and Ednyfed H. Williams Professor of Law, also grouped the criminal codes according to academic grades from A to F. "Our study shows that poor writing, incoherent organization, unclear or missing fundamental elements, absurd criminal offenses and haphazard or arbitrary punishment systems are frighteningly common in American criminal law," said Robinson, the author of the recent book "Would you Convict? 17 Cases that Challenged the Law." Texas, Colorado, Arkansas, Alaska, Missouri, Utah and Arizona ranked in that order got an A for their criminal codes. Vermont, Washington, D.C., Michigan, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, West Virginia and Mississippi ranked 44 through 52 got an F.

Choose an article: The Animal Welfare Movement Animals and the Law Animals and the Law Every day, SPCAs and humane societies across Canada receive calls from concerned, often distraught people reporting mistreatment of animals. A family has moved away without taking their animals; a farmer is not feeding his cattle; a neighbour beats her dog; someone is poisoning cats. What can an SPCA do or not do in each case? No one can make people love their animals nor force them to provide optimal care. SPCAs can try to educate them to do so, they can enforce the existing laws against cruelty, and with our help, they can work to improve those laws. Laws relating to animals fall broadly into two categories: those that protect people from animals and those that protect animals from people. Examples of the former are the Dangerous Dogs Act and most municipal animal control by-laws. Examples of the latter are a provincial
