Extractions: Standard Certification The Massachusetts State Department of Education initiated a two-stage certification process with a new certificate titled School Library Media Specialist (SLMS). The Massachusetts Department of Education is currently in the process of revising state regulations for the licensure of educational personnel, including school library media specialists. The new regulations, when approved by the State Board of Education, will be effective October 2001. The aforementioned requirements may change. Applicants graduating after August 2001, are advised to inquire about these new regulations. Degree Requirements In total, the master's program for the School Library Media Specialist consists of 36 semester hours of graduate, professional education. The requirements are as follows: (1) 14 semester hours of core requirements, which includes a 150 clock hour practicum qualifying the candidate to be eligible for the "provisional with advanced standing" certificate as a school library media specialist; (2) 20 semester hours of required course work; and (3) 400 clock hours of clinical experience, which includes a research paper requirement.
