Extractions: This project was funded by an LSTA grant titled The Public Library's Role in Student Success: a Planning Grant to Determine Best Practices for Multnomah County Library. For one year (January 2001-January 2002), two Multnomah County librarians conducted research, interviews, focus groups and surveys in an effort to identify the most effective strategies for the public library in supporting the academic success of students attending the eight public school districts in Multnomah County. This is a copy of the blank survey we sent out to every school library in all eight public school districts. All the information from the surveys is entered into the database we created for this project, but has yet to be analyzed. We plan to use this information to correlate data on school libraries and student achievement, library budget, collection, staffing, etc.

The LSL program is one component of the Department's commitment to dramatically improve student achievement by focusing available resources, including those of school library media centers, to ensure that no child is left behind. School library media centers have an important role to contribute to the success of local improvement plans especially in the literacy area by increasing collaboration between instructional and school library media center staff, providing additional instructional materials and resources, and extending hours of operation during non-school hours.

Extractions: School Library Library Statement and Rationale HOME 5th Grade Book Reviews Poetry Online Resources ... Suggested Reading "The school library media center is the very heart of a school. Library services are common to all grades, all subjects, teachers, administrators, staff and parents." I can think of no better statement and rationale than that provided by the professional organization, the Massachusetts School Library Media Association in the Standards for School Library Media Centers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1996, published by the Massachusetts Department of Education. Rationale for Todays School Library Media Center "In the complex technological world of today, education is no longer simply the acquisition of a body of knowledge. It is rather the ability to continually access and use a vast array of information sources. The learner must be able to effectively evaluate these sources, combine them in meaningful patterns and react creatively to the results. For a successfully educated individual, this mode of learning becomes a lifelong habit, since knowledge acquired today may be inadequate tomorrow, while the process of searching out answers, once learned, will be a lifelong skill. As education moves beyond the textbook and the classroom, the school library media center and its programs are essential to the educational process, providing access to a collection of skillfully selected, organized, and managed resources in all formats. With such resources, the center serves as a major channel through which the changing body of knowledge flows, thereby providing all members of the school community with the broadest possible range of information and ideas.

Extractions: Objectives for school library media programs adhere to the concepts found in the Information Power guidelines . Defining objectives is a function of the school library media specialist in partnership with administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents. Objectives for the program become the school librarian's responsibility within the school and the library. The school librarian's evaluation should be based on the performance of those defined responsibilites. Here are some examples of program objectives that a school library media center might have, illustrated with sample action items (the school librarian's responsibilities). Extractions: OUR YEAR OF THE CAT 1996-97 THE NEEDHAM SCIENCE CENTER NEEDHAM PUBLIC SCHOOLS NEEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS U. S. A. It was an offer our Science Center could not refuse. A zoo offered us a 450 pound Male lion that had died! Now, who in their right mind could refuse an offer like that? SO... Led by Dan DeWolf's "Taxidermy Magic," we transformed our donated lion into a number of exhibits including a full-size ultra-dramatic skeleton. We caught "CAT FEVER," and so did every teacher that visited us! CONSIDER Because of this mushrooming enthusiasm, the concept of celebrating a "Year of the Cat" evolved as the Needham elementary school's system-wide theme for the 1996-97 school year. Lots of things were done to make this a purr-fectly feline year. TO CELEBRATE CATS, HERE ARE SOME OF OUR ACTIVITIES... A "CATS" AUDITORIUM PROGRAM During the month of November we presented a "Cats" auditorium program for grades K-5. This included demonstrations of "Cat Geography," "Cat Olympics," and "Vanishing Cats." The finale was the assembly of our take-apart lion skeleton which was then, instantly, turned into the skeleton of a Saber Toothed Tiger! LOBBY EXHIBITS These 5 major exhibits, which rotated from school-to-school, were placed in lobbies and hallways early in January and continued until the end of school. The displays included electric quiz boards, skulls and skeletons, posters, exotic cat fur coats, etc.
