Using a simple vector analysis routine and the PORTS wind and current data, a trajectory for the spill was calculated using wind direction as a cardinal direction, wind speed in knots, current direction in degrees true, and current speed in meters per second. At each hour, speed and direction for the oil movement were computed based on these data using a generic Minerals Management Service algorithm. Performance Objectives: Students will describe relationships among the two and three dimensional shapes and their connections to the real world. Students learn to solve problems by using their drawings and technology. Students will make a hypertext notebook of the formulas and ideas in their geometry unit which will include real applications to that formulas or ideas. Instructional Strategies: At the beginning of the unit of study in geometry the teacher explains that the students will create a "Geometry Notebook" using HyperCard or HyperStudio. After each new concept learned, the class will be adding to their notebook. This notebook will become part of their final grade in the geometry unit of study. After the teacher explains each new geometry formula or idea and gives the class examples of practical use of the formula/idea the class will add it to their geometry notebook. Each concept should be explained in two to five cards and should include: 1.) the name of the geometric formula or idea, 2.) an example drawing to show the concept along with the formula, 3.) examples of how the formula/idea relates to shapes in nature*, 4.) two real -world applications of that formula or idea and 5.) at least one sample real world problem for someone in the class to work at a later date. The HyperCard or HyperStudio tools can be used for drawing and design of the cards in the stack.

Imagine teenagers in groups playing with slinkies and cups of marbles, talking and laughing - and then imagine a group of well-dressed visitors taking notes - and you've about got it. "The teachers down the hall thought I was insane," Wilson says. "You can imagine what went through my mind when they called and said 'we're coming on Valentine's Day,' and I looked at my lesson plans and saw what I had planned for that day....You never know what they're going to think. If they're from the old school, they imagine a math class with all these straight rows and the students working quietly."

Such experiences build an understanding of variable, the relationship between variables, and generalizing these relationships. Lesson Objective Students will design and carry out an experiment to model a real world situation. They express their results with multiple representations and use the results to make predictions. Overview of the Lesson Students design an experiment to model a leaky faucet and determine the amount of water wasted due to the leak. Using the data they gather in a table, students graph and write an equation for a line of best fit. Students then use their derived equation to make predictions about the amount of water that would be wasted from one leak over a long period of time or the amount wasted by several leaks during a specific time period. Materials For each group: Procedure Prior to the Lesson: Students should have prior experience interpreting tables and graphs. They should also have worked with finding a function rule for a set of data. It would be helpful, but not necessary, if they had designed models to simulate real world events.
