Linda Schele None of those who are born in the light, begotten in the light will be yours. Several books by the late Linda Schele contribute to the study of mesoamerica and the ancient system used to write glyphs and codices. http://www.halfmoon.org/schele.html
Extractions: Typically, she continued her work as long as she was able. The night before her final hospitalization she took part in a seminar, in spite of the combined effects of her illness and chemotherapy. She died three days later, surrounded by friends and family.. I will not try to list the sum of Linda's contributions, both as an epigrapher or as one who shared the fascination of Mayan hieroglyphics with so many of us. Those of you who have read the books she contributed to or attended the Texas meetings know her value. Her loss leaves an empty space to those who learned so much from her. Beyond her more formal accomplishments, her earthy humor, enormous enthusiasm, and ability to inspire others will all be greatly missed. As will be the generousity she shared so freely with others, from her work with MayaQuest in educating hundreds of schoolchildren to her willingness to take the time to dissuade a single fool (me, for instance) from her folly. Linda's last wish was for enough funds to be raised to create an endowed professorship in Mesoamerican art so that her work would be continued after her death. You can share in helping her last hope to become reality by contributing to the

Extractions: It is generally believed that what we recognize as the ancient Maya culture began around 300 AD as an offshoot of the Olmec civilization. The central Mexican city of Teotihucan traded with the Maya and its influence can clearly be seen in some Maya sites, such as Tikal. In fact, the collapse of Teotihucan in the sixth century had a notable effect on the Maya, causing a virtual standstill of new construction for several decades. Between 600 AD and 800 AD , the Classic Maya theories have been proposed to explain this "collapse" including: over-population, extensive warfare, revolt of the farmer/laborer class, or any number of devastating natural disasters. Whatever the reason, its effect was contained to the central region By the time of the Conquest, the Maya civilization was in its Post Classic phase and had reverted to an essentially Maya culture in scattered city-states. It was this lack of cohesion that would thwart the Spaniard's attempts to conquer the Maya. Although the Maya have endured repression and persecution in one form or another for the past 500 years, more than 6 million descendants still maintain a culture that is distinctly Maya in areas of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.

Extractions: Using approaches from contemporary gender theory, Rosemary Joyce explores how Mesoamericans created human images to represent idealized notions of what it meant to be male and female and to depict proper gender roles. She then juxtaposes these images with archaeological evidence from burials, house sites, and body ornaments, which reveals that real gender roles were more fluid and variable than the stereotyped images suggest.
