UMMZ Mollusk Division-- Taehwan Lee Phylogenetic relationships among North American sphaeriid genera were tested using education.2001, Ph.D. University of michigan, Ann Arbor, michigan, USA. http://www.ummz.lsa.umich.edu/mollusks/people/taehwan.html
Extractions: Email: taehwanl@umich.edu My research interests are on the evolution and systematics of bivalve mollusks. I am especially keen on using morphological and molecular phylogenetic patterns to test evolutionary hypotheses concerning life-history and reproductive/developmental character evolution as well as biogeography. Through my Ph.D. study, I conducted a number of evolutionary studies of the cosmopolitan freshwater fingernail clams (Family Sphaeriidae) which exhibit various peculiar biological features, including hermaphroditism, self-fertilization, ovoviviparity and pronounced polyploidy. Chromosomes of various North American taxa were cytogenetically investigated and evolutionary hypotheses concerning the origins of sphaeriid genome duplication were tested by phylogenetic analyses of single-copy nuclear gene (PGD) allele sequences. Phylogenetic relationships among North American sphaeriid genera were tested using morphological characters. Finally, the current sphaeriid taxonomy was revised based on separate as well as combined phylogenetic analyses of three different gene sequence data, mitochondrial COI and 16S, and nuclear ITS1. Extractions: The World's Biomes, provided by the University California Berkeley's Museum of Paleontology, is an introduction to the earth's ecological regions. Biomes are the world's ecological communities, distinguishable by their predominant vegetation and by the organisms that have adapted to that vegetation. This site provides an introduction to the environmental and ecological features typical of various aquatic, desert, forest, grassland, and tundra biomes. Users can read about the planet's ecosystems, including information on the weather conditions, as well as the geological and soil conditions, that allow different biomes to flourish. The site contains a reference page with suggestions for further reading. [CH] The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set up this site to teach kids about global warming, climate change, and climatology, as well as environmentally friendly habits that benefit the earth. The site allows students and educators to approach ecological issues from various perspectives. Global Warming (What it is) is an introduction to current climatological change. Other resources such as Climate and Weather and What is the Climate System? provide overviews of such climatological phenomena as the water cycle, greenhouse gasses, and climatological change over the world's history. Finally, socially and environmentally conscious resources such as So What's the BIG DEAL? and We CAN Make a Difference discuss how changes in our daily lives can affect our impact on the earth's climate. The site also has games, animations modeling climatological activity, and recommendations for educators interested in using the site.

From 1971-1979, he worked for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in Annapolis in a tidal wetland program. He has lead numerous field trips in the mid-Atlantic Region and has taught various wetland delineation and plant identification courses in the private sector at Johns Hopkins University, and the Institute for Wetland and Environmental Education and Research in Laverett, MA, Environmental Concern, Inc. in St. Michaels, MD, the Northern Virginia Community College in Woodbridge, VA, and at the Graduate School, U. S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC. His graduate training was in regional planning at the University of Pennsylvania and plant ecology at the University of Maryland. This seminar offers a comprehensive overview of the systematics and ecology of grasses, sedges, and rushes. Field studies will focus on recognition of major groups and important species, but will also cover reasons for the diversity of species in different habitats of coastal and inland Maine. Lab studies of specimens and discussions will develop identification skills and will review the various keys that are available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own challenging or interesting specimens needing identification or verification.
