Pacific News Member of Micronesia Marshall Islands These beautiful islands are a collection of 1,225 islands and islets of which only five are single islands. The rest are grouped into 29 coral atolls which together make up more than one-tenth of all the atolls in the world. They resemble strings of pearls in a blue ocean backdrop, which is why they are referred to as the 'Pearl of The Pacific'. They lie in two parallel chains known as Sunrise and Sunset (Ratak and Ralik) and in true atoll form, they are narrow and low and encircle large central lagoons. All the islands have glorious white sandy beaches, tall palms and are lapped by crystal clear waters. Of the 29 atolls, 27 are accessible by small plane (Air Marshall Islands). Majuro and Kwajalein Atolls, the two population centres are serviced by both Air Marshall Islands and Continental Air Micronesia jet aircraft. There are also regular flights to Guam, Hawaii and Fiji.

Extractions: As an unincorporated territory of the United States , Midway officially flies the flag of the U. S. However, an unofficial flag was designed for the Memorial Day 2000 event being held at the USS Arizona by the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge staff with assistance of a National Park Service employee. The top blue is sky blue, the thin stripe is white for the beach and the turquoise (greenish blue) bottom stripe is for the color of the surrounding ocean. The bird, a Laysan Albatross, is white and black. Located in Oceania, Midway is a coral atoll in the North Pacific Ocean, about one-third of the way from Honolulu, Hawaii , to Tokyo, Japan . The island group includes Eastern Island, Sand Island, and Spit Island. Claimed by the U. S. in 1867 under the Guano Act, Midway operated as a U.S. Navy installation until recent years. When the U. S. Navy closed its facilities at Midway Island, the island was transferred to the Department of the Interior. It is managed as a national wildlife refuge and is open to the public for wildlife-related recreation in the form of wildlife observation and photography, sport fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Because of the cost of maintaining a protected area so far from the shores, a private company was leased the right to operate a hotel facility which allows people to view the wildlife in the area as well as the historic sites on the island. Under the contract, the hotel employees and Interior Department employees cannot exceed 150 in number, and the total number of tourists cannot be more than 100. The accommodations are former military housing units.

Extractions: Midway Night Information The Battle of Midway, fought near the Central Pacific island of Midway, is considered the decisive battle of the war in the Pacific. Before this battle the Japanese were on the offensive, capturing territory throughout Asia and the Pacific. By their attack, the Japanese had planned to capture Midway to use as an advance base, as well as to entrap and destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Because of communication intelligence successes, the U.S. Pacific Fleet surprised the Japanese forces, sinking the four Japanese carriers, that had attacked Pearl Harbor only six months before, while only losing of one carrier. After Midway, the Americans and their Allies took the offensive in the Pacific. Background to the Battle of Midway Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1941, the Japanese armed forces conducted military operations against U.S., British Commonwealth, and Dutch possessions in the Pacific and Southeast Asia. The first phase of these operations, which was the seizure of Malaysia, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, the Philippines, and various island groups in the central and western Pacific, was virtually complete by March 1942. The second phase, initiated by Japanese Imperial Headquarters on 23 January, was designed to isolate and neutralize Australia and India. In the Pacific, this plan envisioned the seizure of bases in Papua/New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, which would be used to support future operations against New Caledonia, Fiji, and Samoa. By early March, with the seizure of Lae and Salamaua, the entire north coast of Papua/New Guinea had fallen to Japanese forces who were planning for an amphibious invasion of Port Moresby.
