Extractions: Index Home About Looking over HMS Belfast is also a pretty good way to use up several hours. [mod.note: Belfast is a light cruiser (in Washington Treaty terminology) as she's armed with six-inch guns. She displaces 10,000 tons and was the lead ship of the third group of Southampton class cruisers. - Bill ] There is the Imperial War Museum in Kennington, south of the Thames. It will be marked on any tourist map. Bits of Berlin wall, Polaris missile, collection of aircraft hanging off the ceiling and a lot of odd bits and peices of military history. An example of this is the covert stuff. There is a German torpedo vessel, crewed by a single man, carrying two ca. 450cm torpedoes, one either side of the hull, which is shaped very much like a torpedo itself. This craft was intended for what would probably be called 'covert precision strike' or some such these days, as its optical (and presumably audible) signatures were very small. Centimetric radar may well have shown it up, but you'd have to know what you were looking for. Index
Extractions: Index Home About : Not to dwell on the macabre, but the big science museum in Chicago : (the one on the lakeI forget its name) has a (very, very, very old) : exhibit where a cadaver has been sliced top-to-bottom in something like : 1/2" slices and encased in lucite or something similar. These are then : mounted on a hinge, so you can "flip thru" them like the pages of a book. Yes, it's the Museum of Science and Industry on Lake Shore Drive, just south of downtown Chicago. By all means an excellent museum! I especially like touring the captured submarine (WWII ?). : This must date from before the 50's. I'd have to agree. It's been 4 years or more since I saw the exhibit, but it was definitely pretty old. Fascinating, though. Not a naval base, but it's worth a plug are the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath and Bath Iron Works next door. You can take a boat ride on the Kennebec and get a good view of the ways at BIW, and MMM has exhibits on naval shipbuilding etc. From: bartb@hpfcla.fc.hp.com (Bart Bobbitt) Newsgroups: rec.guns Subject: Re: Barrel Dia. measure w/ air? Date: 13 Apr 1994 21:58:05 -0400 Folks wanting to see an air gage in a rifle barrel should visit the John Browning Museum at Rock Island Arsenal near Rock Island, Illinois. There's a sectioned M14 with a Sheffield Air Gage pushed into about mid point in the barrel. The gaging head, air lines, pump and readout gage are all there. An interesting display indeed. At least this was there when I last visited the place about 5 years ago. BB

Extractions: Preserved US Military Aircraft This list of US military aircraft preserved and displayed was originally compiled by Ben Marselis with input from many others. He posted it on the newsgroups and we asked him if we could host it here. With his cooperation, we have converted it to HTML and added URL's for pictures and technical data. Over the decades covered by the list, designations and types have become hopelessly muddled. I will try to keep the various lists in as much logical and chronological order as possible, but you may have to look in several to get what you want. In general, reconnaissance versions and other specialized variants will be included with the basic type.

We couldn't afford the kind of fishing poles that could be broken down and carried inside a vehicle. We had to settle for bamboo poles and war surplus (olive green) fishing line. Since these poles could not be broken down, we had to tie them to the side of our airplane. A picture of the airplane is at a link memorializing my father .
