General education in the liberal arts has two important goals. Laying the foundation for education in the liberal arts is essential to establishing an intellectual framework for liberal learning and on developing the critical and creative thinking skills and communication skills needed for future work. Courses such as English Composition develop written communication skills that will be used throughout one's college and professional life. General education courses which emphasize development of such process skills can be useful to the working adult as well as the traditional student in pursuit of an undergraduate liberal arts degree.
