The approach taken by the working group has been to define 22 high level metadata fields that should be used in all metadata directories in Australia and New Zealand. The rationale is to include only those fields needed to determine: whether or not any data set exists on the required issue, subject or theme, what area, generally, is covered by the data set, summary information about the content and quality of the data set to assist the user in deciding whether to enquire further, and a contact for getting further information. For instance, the user can define a region of interest by clicking and dragging the mouse to define a box or by clicking on a number of map sheets to build up a list. This information can then be submitted to the server to carry out a search for data sets. Mapping systems can be set up using Java and pre-prepared transparent GIF images but these are inadequate for many purposes. Access to the zoom/ pan/ overlay/ and analysis capabilities of GIS systems through the Web is required. ESRI's Spatial Database Engine (SDE) offers interesting possibilities for interactive mapping on the Web and has been used by Telstra Australia to map the locations of Australian businesses found via directory search on the Web. For catalogues stored in the Oracle RDBMS, Oracle Web System provides a method of direct access and distributed searching but represents a proprietary solution which may not be used by every agency providing data.
