Extractions: The development of any computer software is a graduated process of trial and not infrequent error over accumulated time. The HyperFind system developed by the staff of the Social Welfare History Archives is moving toward the close of the "alpha 1" stage. In other words, there's enough viable substance here to produce immediately visible results, but the underlying application is still being developed to integrate new features as well as refine and extend the existing functional range. From moment to moment this daily work may briefly interfere with the returns produced here. In the interim, a reduced set of functions has been extended through a custom software component to respond to the frames capable browser standard at present most commonly in use. This access point is not intended for public display (hence the primitive design aesthetic), but as a vehicle to show Libraries staff members how text, images, and other information about diverse archival collections can be accessed through hierarchical displays and custom indexing. The HTML that produces this view in the web browser is created on-the-fly at the time of request by the remote user. Thus, the system is responsive to ongoing work in real time. Changes made through the HyperFind interface are instantly reflected to remote users. Moreover, this retrofitted version can be maintained indefinitely for users who do not upgrade to ActiveX compliant browsers.

Housed in five major facilities and eleven branch sites, the University Library system is comprised of over 5 million print volumes, 48,000 serial subscriptions, 5 million microforms, 3 million government documents, and 397,000 maps, making it the 17th largest research library in North America. Extractions: Theres never a dull moment in retirement for leaders in the library profession. Pat Green (formerly Harpole) has moved to P.O. Box 2558, Homer, Alaska 99603. "I shall miss Minnesota but the adventure of moving to Alaska was too good to pass up, especially being with daughter, son-in-laws and grandchildren." 00 miles from Anchorage, Pat is exploring her creative side. For example, four acres of trees prompt her to consider making lathe bowls. In spring and summer 2003 she will host seven-day needlework seminars near Homer, AK that also feature art galleries, restaurants, local history, fishing, and a demonstration of octopus ink painting. Pats kaleidioscope of careers includes being an author, indexer, owner of a used book store, librarian at Minnesota Historical Society, MLA president, and delegate to the White House Conference on Libraries and Information/Minnesota. Congratulations, Pat, and thank you for the many ways you improved MLA and libraries. Mariann Tiblin , Associate Professor and Bibliographer of Scandinavian Area Studies at the University of Minnesota Libraries since 1968, retired in January of 2002. Ms Tiblin was also German and Dutch Language and Literature Bibliographer from 1995 until her retirement. She received her Fil. Kand. from the University of Stockholm in 1961 and her degree from the Swedish School of Librarianship, also in Stockholm, in 1965. During her long and productive career, Ms Tiblin has earned an international reputation for her work as bibliographer and teacher, and for community service and outreach to all with an interest in Scandinavia and Scandinavian Americans. She has a long and distinguished record of service in the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study, the Western European Studies Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association, and the International Federation of Library Associations.

Extractions: The book that started it all . . . . . . taken by Charles Lesley Ames as reading material on a trip to England in 1907, W. H. Fitchett's The Tale of the Great Mutiny so impressed its reader that he spent the rest of his life building a library on the British-Indian interaction. In 1961, after more than 50 years of dedicated collecting, Ames gave his library to the University of Minnesota. The gift of over 25,000 titles, including manuscripts, photographs, maps, prints and drawings, immediately established the University as having one of the pre-eminent libraries for the study of South Asia in the western world. The main focus of the collection is the British-Indian interaction. Particularly noteworthy are the holdings of: Current collecting for the Ames Library relates to all aspects of the humanities and social sciences. A Department of Education Title IIC grant provided funding for the cataloging of rare books, pamphlets, tracts and manuscripts in the collection.

Wearing a uniform and trailing a flowing cape and American flag, she leads other women who have heeded the call for service. They seem to have just left their work in hospitals, on the farm, in the kitchen, or in the office. In the foreground a woman in a blue robe and nurse cap is reaching upward, striving for a goal that brings movement and yearning to the image. Many propaganda posters had messages aimed at women and many others used images of women and children to evoke a strong emotional response. University of Minnesota Libraries. The propaganda posters of World War I and World War II were not only aimed at the recruitment of men, but also at women, who were needed in the defense industries, the civilian service, and even the Armed Forces. The posters glorified and glamorized the work and with flags and other symbols depicted it as their patriotic fulfillment.
