Child And Adolescent Food And Nutrition Programs -- Position Of ADA nutrition, nutrition education, and nutrition programs for programs must respond to emerging nutritional concerns about the role of diet in health promotion, the role of nutrition http://www.eatright.org/adaposchild.html
Extractions: Home Knowledge Center Nutrition Resources Member Log In Search Find a Dietitian (Enter ZIP) Our children are our future. In light of that, The American Dietetic Association (ADA) recognizes the importance of nutrition, nutrition education, and physical activity to the growth and development of the nation's children (1). Food and nutrition programs for children and adolescents, whether school food programs or programs targeting at-risk populations, are an important way to ensure that US children will continue to have access to a healthful diet that follows the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2): eat a healthful, varied diet, as outlined in the Food Guide Pyramid (3), and balance energy intake with physical activity. Children who do not have access to an adequate diet are at risk for a variety of conditions. For example, research has estab lished that malnutrition in early life can limit long-term intel lectual development, and that learning capabilities are af fected by how recently one has eaten (4). Despite the demonstrated need for nutrition programs for children, historically, local, state, and federal governments have had a controversial role in meeting the food and nutrition needs of our children and adolescents (5). Furthermore, because most child nutrition programs are federally funded, there is a constant threat of elimination or alteration as the political climate changes. To ensure continued access to food and nutrition programs we must have reliable funding and national nutrition standards that ensure quality programs for all children and adolescents (6).
Extractions: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC Program) is a supplemental food and nutrition program for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, and infants and young children who are at nutritional risk. The purpose of the WIC Program is to prevent health problems and to improve the health of program participants during critical times of growth and development. The WIC Program provides nutrition education, access to health services, referrals to health and other social services and vouchers for supplemental foods. The food vouchers list the types and quantities of WIC foods that are consistent with the participant's nutritional needs. We're excited about the options we can offer and we hope this information will be useful as you explore this field. Public health nutrition advances knowledge about the role of nutrition in disease prevention and health promotion and applies this knowledge to planning, managing, delivering, and evaluating nutrition services and programs. Four key areas of study include: analyzing the relationship of diet to health and disease; developing, implementing, and evaluating programs to achieve and maintain healthful eating patterns; assuring delivery of nutrition services as a basic component of health care; and providing access to a safe and adequate food supply.

Extractions: We are reporting against one joint or integrated research and Extension theme-human nutrition. However, this theme embraces a wide spectrum of nutrition programs, each targeted to a specific type of audience. The commonality is the attempt to get each audience to better understand nutrition and change their eating habits, in order to better maintain their health. Inputs and Outputs : Nutritional research and educational programming are closely linked. Consumers are often frustrated by the plethora of information on diet and health-much of it contradictory. However, there is growing public recognition of the connection between a well-balanced diet and maintaining good health/preventing disease, so many consumers are interested in new information. Extension is generally viewed as a reliable source of information-especially when it is linked to university research. Educators estimated that they'd reached more than 17,000 people with nutrition and health information during 2000-01. In order to do this, they invested about 2.9 FTEs of time and about $116,000 in program costs. Extension staff also reported receiving nearly $293,000 in grant funds to support their work. They collaborated with a number of organizations and agencies, e.g., the Childcare Providers Association, tribal colleges (in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin), technical colleges, churches, hospitals, human service and public health departments, community education programs, the Minnesota Council on Aging, and numerous others.
