Extractions: CHILD SUPPORT RESOURCES ON THE WEB Many individuals have started to contact our office regarding actions pending in another state. Unfortunately, each state has their own rules about collection of child support, and you may need to speak to an attorney licensed in that state. An attorney licensed only in California, or New York, or Florida, can only answer questions regarding the law in the state they are licensed, and unfortunately, there is no simple answer since each state is free to make up their own rules for enforcement. Also, part of the requirements of the bar in each individual state is a rule that an attorney licensed in one state shall not give legal advise regarding the laws of another state unless they are licensed in that state. An attorney can be sanctioned by their own bar for failure to follow these ethical rules. So, if your matter is pending in some other state, take advantage of the research we have done. Contact one of the attorney referral services listed below, or nationwide organizations listed. Do not contact us, because you will most likely get a response that reiterates the bar rules of the state of California. The following is a list of resources we have found on the web for further information, and it is not intended to be exhaustive, nor does the listing serve as an endorsement of their views or reliability of the legal information included. These are being posted for the hundreds of people who call or email each month about a case somewhere outside of California, or for those people who cannot afford the services of an attorney or for those who are just simply interested in learning more. This site will be updated quarterly, and if anyone has any suggestions or comments about a site, or wants to include some other site that we missed, please feel free to email us with the information.

Extractions: "The Commissioners may create a Section of the Bar at any time. Each Section may adopt, amend and repeal Bylaws by a vote of 2/3 of its members present at any meeting thereof. The Bylaws of any Section shall not be in conflict with these Bylaws. The initial Bylaws of the Section shall conform to Model Bylaws approved by the Board of Commissioners, and no amendment thereto shall be affected without approval of the Board of Commissioners." (Bylaws of The Mississippi Bar, Article 8). Membership in all Sections is open to any Bar member in good standing upon payment of the prescribed Section dues. As voluntary, non-appointed groups, Sections elect their own officers and choose their own activities with the limitations established by the Bylaws of the Bar and the Section, as well as general policies established by the Board of Commissioners and the Section Executive Committees. Sections provide the structure through which all members of the Bar have the opportunity to participate in its work. Sections may be divided into smaller units. For example, committees of Sections may be appointed to undertake particular assignments such as membership, newsletter, legislation, annual meeting program, etc., or practice areas may be further divided within Sections by the establishment of committees. The Executive Committee of each Section should serve to govern and coordinate the work of the Section committees rather than attempt to undertake all Section work.

Extractions: When the government of the United States established the Mississippi Territory in 1798, the region around Natchez, which held the bulk of the population, contained about 5,000 whites and 3,500 slaves. Upon entering the union in 1817, Mississippi received slavery as a fully established economic and agricultural system. With the exception of the interior of the Delta region, which remained largely isolated and unsettled until after the Civil War, Mississippi by 1850 had been formed as illustrated by this county map In 1817 Mississippi had a population of about 40,000 whites and 30,000 African Americans. By 1860 African Americans made up 50% of Mississippi's total population of approximately 791,000 people. The African American's place was solidly established, regulated by legal codes and fueled by the institution of slavery. At the time of its admission only the southern quarter and a narrow strip up the Mississippi to the Yazoo were open to legal settlement. The rest of the state was held by the Chickasaw and Choctow nations. By 1835 these Indian nations had lost all claims to their territory. An increasing flow of newcomers to the southern and eastern sections of the territory, mainly from Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and the region above Mobile began to arrive. Those who arrived with sufficient capital quickly took possession of the better dark-soil lands and established plantations, leaving the cheaper uplands for those of lesser means. The French first introduced slavery into the Mississippi territory in the early 1700 and the English, who later settled into the territory, were eager purchasers of slaves.

Extractions: Gambling proponents frequently refer to the economic activity and tax revenues generated by casinos in Mississippi as the "Mississippi Miracle." However, these same proponents conveniently ignoreor attempt to concealmany of the negative social and economic impacts attributable to the casinos. The depth and breadth of the harmful repercussions spawned by casino gambling in just a few short years reveal that the "Mississippi Miracle" is rather a mirage. A Growth Industry: Gambling Addiction Mississippi now has one of the highest rates of gambling addiction in the nation. Nearly 7% of Mississippi adults register as having had a problem with gambling at some point in their lives, while nearly 5% indicate such a problem in the past year. This is even more striking given the fact that less than half of Mississippi adults report participating in a gambling activity in the past year. That means that approximately one in every ten Mississippians who does gamble fits the criteria as a problem or pathological gambler. While only a small fraction of those with gambling problems actually seek treatment, the number of such individuals in Mississippi has risen dramatically in recent years. According to a March 1998
