Extractions: Suggested Curriculum School Analyses (the competition) Suggested Curriculum (the competitive applicant) Gloria Schultz Special Libraries are difficult to define, in general, because they are so varied. They may be found in private companies, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, or professional organizations, specializing in such areas as law, medicine, business, news, and engineering. The Special Library Association lists twenty-eight subdivisions in all. Information Centers, or Non-libraries, are even more difficult to explain, as they are extremely varied. They are mostly found in private companies and while some of the tasks performed may be the same as a special library, the settings can be very different. In general, librarians who work in these settings tend to provide information for a client, rather than assisting the client in finding his or her own information. The information provided is related to the mission of the organization and computer skills are of the utmost importance in job performance.

Extractions: -By Becky Mather,Information Literacy Task Force Co-Chair A recent article in Principal Leadership ,("Eliminating a 'Yes, But ' Curriculum," Oct.2001 http://www.nassp.org/news/pl_yes_but1001.html ) discussed the importance of helping students become "confident, competent, and joyous readers. The author, Janet Allen, spoke of the need to teach students to love reading. Amen to that! And who better to help nurture a love of reading than the school media specialist? Unfortunately, media specialists and media centers are not mentioned in this article. As Matt Kollasch, moderator of the SLIK-12 listserv wrote on Oct.16: " Read it and weep folks. Not ONE mention of a school library media specialist or the physical entity called the "library" in this article on the importance of reading among students. And this is going to be read by school leaders who will,in many cases, (yet again) ignore the importance of a school library media program. Someone in the field should react to what is missing in this story! AASL should react to this article! How is it that the editors at PRINCI- PALS didn 't catch this...how is that Janet Allen ignored "us." We aren 't telling our story very effectively...is that it? I have been out of the front ranks of school librarianship for about a decade now,so please help me understand why PRINCIPALS and Ms.Allen still don 't get it, as it were?"
