Extractions: Office of Communications and Public Affairs GSU educators design teacher certification examination preparation model GRAMBLING - Preparation of quality teachers was the goal of several faculty members in the Teacher Education Department of the College of Education at Grambling State University who designed a model to help teacher education test takers master the Praxis examination. The Praxis exam is the testing component used in the certification of teachers. The Praxis series is a program developed by the Educational Testing Service and includes several types of tests that are used as assessment tools for teacher candidates across the country. Each state has a "cut-off score" for those students entering the teacher preparation program. Teacher candidates must also meet requirements for a given state. Three GSU faculty members, Elaine Foster, assistant professor of education; Dr. Kathryn Newman and Dr. Loretta Walton Jaggers, both professors of education, designed The ACHIEVE Model. The model was the result of a review of related literature regarding test mastery and numerous years of experience that the team had in conducting test preparation workshops at Grambling State University and surrounding areas. The model was basically designed to help test takers enhance content knowledge, expand test taking skills and strengthen their self confidence in an effort to promote test mastery. The model was also designed to help expand and reinforce skills necessary for promoting effective teaching and learning in the classroom.

Extractions: International Employment for Teachers Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.
