This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. Also see our list of Early Entrance College Programs , programs specifically designed for the younger student ready for college level course work. And, don't miss this list of U.S. schools that specialize in LD students, often working well with gifted / LD students... LD Resources K-12 Schools with LD Programs, USA

Extractions: Language and Stories Have you ever heard Mary Louise tell a story? If not, you're in for a treat! She weaves English and Dakotah languages together to create beautiful images, teach lessons, and share history. One of the reasons she weaves the languages together is because she wants people to hear the sounds and tones of the Dakotah and Hidatsa languages. Mary Louise also hopes that in listening to the languages in her stories you'll begin to learn the language they way she did, through stories. Everyone in Mary Louise's family told stories, but it was her Hidatsa grandmother who left a lasting impression on her about Native languages. While Mary Louise was growing up, her grandmother frequently came to visit. She lived about 45 miles away and Mary Louise remembers that she "would always hire someone to drive her here. As kids, we would see a car pull up and get excited because we never knew who it was going to be at first! But, sure enough, the driver would be bringing our Hidatsa grandmother! Oh, I remember how she'd tell us this story about a boy who lived with his grandmother and had many adventures..." By listening to her stories, Mary Louise learned Hidatsa words.

Teachers increasingly emphasized the importance of speech in teaching deaf children and often excluded the use of sign language entirely. In response, deaf individuals and the National Association of the Deaf rose in defense of what they called "the natural language of the deaf." Have students research the history of languages other than English in the United States by searching the following on the Web: Cajun French. Spoken in Louisiana by people of French heritage who were expelled by the English from Canada in the late 1700s, this language of the Bayou was forbidden in schools.

The two men Dale Knowlton hired to abduct his 16-year-old son showed up as planned at his home near Kansas City at 4 a.m. sharp. Because Knowlton was nervous, because he wanted the regrettable work over and done, he met the men in the middle of his yard, before they even reached his doorstep. As the father greeted the near strangers who would take away his defiant and suicidal son, he felt crushed by failure. That it had come to this. That he really was out of options. That no one not therapists, not insurance companies, not the juvenile justice system gave him any choice but to have his son taken by force to a religious reform school across the state.Knowlton had sought out the men from California after he first heard of "escort services" that do nothing but transport problem teens to treatment programs. He was relieved that the obscure industry could help but devastated to be one its clients. "It was the most horrendous decision of my life," he said. Several days and $2,500 later, he was letting the men in his home and going over the protocol they had discussed in numerous phone calls. He took them directly to his sleeping son, turned on the light, and repeated a rehearsed line that went something like: "Corey, I love you very much, but we both know that you need help. These guys are here to help you."
