Extractions: 2002-2003 Undergraduate Catalog Home Teacher Education Program Southwest Missouri State University is approved by the Missouri State Board of Education to offer basic and advanced professional education programs for purposes of professional certification. Admission to the University does not automatically qualify a student to participate in the professional component of the teacher education program. That participation is granted upon demonstration of a high level of academic and professional competence. Successful participation should result in the students achieving certification to teach in Missouri public schools. Professional Portfolio All students desiring Missouri certification are required to submit a professional portfolio. This portfolio will be assessed, evaluated, and monitored throughout the teacher education program with assistance and guidance from faculty. There are three distinct checkpoints for the portfolio: 1) at admission to the teacher education program (culmination of the introductory course-ELE 302 or SEC 301 or SPE 310), 2) at the designated methods course(s) for each departmental major, and 3) at the culmination of supervised teaching. Completion of certification requirements is a four-step process. Students who receive a certification recommendation must meet the standards for certification eligibility as outlined below:

Most colleges will require more than the minimum listed courses or credit hours: Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education: Certification Look on the right side of the page for a direct link to teacher certification requirements. A second frequently asked question is where can I take classes other than at MWSC. Be cautious with taking classes that are not formally approved for teacher certification by a college or university. The following, however are sources for off-campus study classes.
Extractions: D epartment of E ducation Teacher certification options offered through the Department of Education include: All teacher education majors except some middle school students are required to double major in a subject area. This requirement ensures that students have a firm grounding in the liberal arts and sciences; widens their prospects for employment upon graduation; and enables them to return for graduate study in their second major field if they so desire. Middle school and secondary teacher education students will double major in the subject area they expect to teach. The State of Missouri requires specific content in those majors; please consult an education advisor for more specific information. In addition all teacher education students must complete the State of Missouri's general education requirements which are: American History American Government Economics (Elementary only) or any Social Science elective (Secondary) Physical or Earth Science (Laboratory work required) Biological Science (Laboratory work required) Oral Communications College-level mathematics (two courses for Middle School)
Extractions: D epartment of E ducation The Post-A.B. (P.A.B.) Teacher Certification Program is designed for those with a baccalaureate degree who desire secondary (9-12) or middle school (5-9) teacher certification without seeking another degree. Secondary and middle school can be done together if all requirements for both programs are met including two student teaching experiences. Course work may be completed on a part-time basis through University College (the evening division of the College of Arts and Sciences), which offers substantially lower tuition than the day school. Course work is taken for undergraduate credit. This program leads to teacher certification only; no degree is granted through this program. For General Education requirements, please see the teacher certification page. Subject Area Requirements To achieve certification through this program students will need to fulfill State requirements in three fields: general education, the teaching subject area, and professional education. Washington University offers post-baccalaureate secondary teacher certification programs in the following areas: Art, Classics (Latin), English, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages (K-12) (French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Russian), Unified Science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics), and Social Studies (usually History or Political Science major). Art and foreign languages are K-12 certifications; all other areas are for grades 9-12. Middle school (5-9) teacher certification can be done in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, or English. This program assumes that entering students already have a major or the equivalent of a major in the subject area they wish to teach. Nevertheless students should expect to take some subject area course work to meet Missouri requirements.
Health Teacher Certification missouri State Health teacher certification. The Status of Health Education inmissouri. You have heard of the missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP). http://www.lincolnu.edu/~ddalton/mohealthcert.htm
Extractions: Missouri State Health Teacher Certification You have heard of the Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP) . It is a document of standards which lays out the state's vision and expectations for a quality school and is the method of accrediting Missouri's public schools. One standard states: "The district must document how it is providing comprehensive health instruction, including, specifically, drug and alcohol abuse prevention education and AIDS prevention education to all students at every grade level." (Copies of the MSIP standards are available from DESE.) Presently, only courses that have "Health" in the course title require a Certified Health Teacher (CHT). These courses are found predominantly at the high school health level. The majority of Missouri's children (K-8) are expected to be taught health by classroom teachers who have not been certified to teach health. It is the "integrated" approach which often never gets done. Lincoln University would like to help central Missouri's active teachers become better prepared to integrate health into their classrooms by becoming Certified Health Teachers. Most of our health-related courses are offered in the late afternoon, evening, or summer for your convenience. In-service training can broaden the knowledge base of working teachers and get the much needed health curriculum actively working in Missouri schools. Our children and communities need it desparately. Lincoln University's Department of Education is just beginning to include Health Education as part of its pre-service program.
Teacher Certification Requirements teacher certification Requirements. A Position Paper of the missouriSchool Counselor Association. Spring 2000. The missouri School http://schoolweb.missouri.edu/MSCA/Teacher Certification.htm
Extractions: Teacher Certification Requirements A Position Paper of the Missouri School Counselor Association Spring 2000 The Missouri School Counselor Association (MSCA) is strongly recommending that a teaching requirement remain part of the certification requirements for all school counselors in Missouri. MSCA believes there are a number of compelling reasons for the continuation of teaching training and experience for counselor certification as part of the certification process. Missouri is the leading authority in Comprehensive Guidance Programs. According to figures from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, 96 percent of the school districts in Missouri have implemented comprehensive guidance programs. One of the major components of a comprehensive program includes classroom visits so that the counselor is no longer in an office waiting for students, but rather in the classroom interacting with each and every student on his/her caseload. Specific curriculum is delivered and each student is now exposed to the counselor on a regular and on-going basis. In order to maintain classroom control, employ affective teaching methods and assess student learning, a teaching certificate and experience is vital. Often teachers in Missouri are given preparation time during the school counselors classroom visit and the counselor is left in total charge of the students and the classroom. It is also important to note that a counselors training will enable him/her to recognize subtle signs of a student at risk and shorten the time that may elapse before a teacher would recommend and refer that student for assistance. The combination of teaching with counseling would be a valuable asset in identifying and helping students in need.
