Extractions: The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. Everyone's favorite is synchronized swimming, which

Extractions: Australian officials yesterday joined the fight over whether Tiger Woods and George Gregan should get the chance to compete in the Beijing 2008 Olympics while softballers, baseballers and pentathletes sit at home. The International Olympic Committee program commission recommends introducing golf, rugby sevens and an undisclosed sport at the expense of softball, baseball and modern pentathlon. Its report was delivered to IOC executives yesterday. The proposal is part of the IOC's bid to modernise the Olympic program. Other events, including walking, Greco-Roman wrestling and the three-day event in equestrian, are also under review. Softball Australia chief executive Neil Dalrymple said his organisation was "extremely disappointed" with the recommendation to cut softball. "We have 46,000 registered players and we would lose a lot of impetus for softball in Australia. Being an Olympic event raises the profile and marketability of the sport," he said.

Modern Pentathlon Australia The choice of the five diverse and unrelated sports which make up the Patton, wasto finish fifth in the first ever olympic modern pentathlon competition and http://www.pentathlon.org.au/mpa-history.htm
Extractions: The ancient pentathlon consisting of running the length of the stadium, jumping, throwing the spear, throwing the discus and wrestling was introduced for the first time at the 18th Olympiad in 708 BC, probably by the Spartans as a method of training soldiers. The earliest recorded winner of the ancient pentathlon was Lampis of Sparta, 2 707 years ago. Admiration for the ancient pentathlon was fully shared by the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The modern pentathlon , introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm, Sweden, 1912, comprised of the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running, embracing the spirit of its ancient counterpart. It was De Coubertin's belief that it would be the event, above all others, that "tested a man's moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing thereby the ideal, complete athlete". The choice of the five diverse and unrelated sports which make up the modern pentathlon arose out of the romantic adventures of a liaison officer whose horse is brought down in enemy territory. Having defended himself with his pistol and sword, he swims across a raging river and delivers the message on foot. Not surprisingly, it was the military which most enthusiastically adopted this new sport with its inherent demands of courage, coordination, physical fitness, self-discipline and flexibility in ever changing circumstances.

Extractions: Pittsburgh currently has a robust, albeit aging, sports infrastructure, which includes Three Rivers Stadium, the Civic Arena, and Pitt Stadium. The proposed Olympic plans would replace or renovate the older facilities, construct new venues, and provide for public sports and recreation parks within Pittsburgh itself. It also highlights this region of the United States, distributing events as necessary to neighboring states. The majority of the venues fall into four main geographical groups: Golden Triangle This zone includes Oakland, Bellefield, and Schenley Park. Five of the venues will be concentrated in this area, as well as the Olympic Village. Major new facilities include additional housing facilities at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, a tennis and racquet complex, and a new convocation center at the University of Pittsburgh. Also planned are major renovations to Pitt Stadium. Greater Pittsburgh

Reports Of Triathlon's Olympic Demise Are Greatly Exaggerated I think the IOC is trying to make sure the olympic sports are contemporary and thosesports which are expensive and outdated, like modern pentathlon, are more http://www.insidetri.com/news/fea/1124.0.html
Extractions: Just when triathlon thought it was safely in the Olympic family, news of a new threat appeared this week in the media. Or did it? Months after the last emergency, when International Triathlon Union-European Triathlon Union squabbles threatened to boot the sport from the International Olympic Committee family, a new alert materialized from an Agence France-Press article on three proposed new Olympic sports for the 2008 games in Beijing. AFP Irish writer Erskine McCullough wrote that the IOC is considering including golf, a Chinese martial arts called wushu, and seven-man rugby. The catch for triathlon is that under IOC President Jacques Rogge's new regime, the inclusion of any new sport must be matched by the departure of another sport. In his August 26 article, McCullough wrote: "The three facing the ax are believed to be triathlon, baseball and softball." ITU president Les McDonald told McCullough "If we are thrown out of the Olympics, it will kill triathlon as we know it. I simply see no logic in the plan. We are spectator friendly and television friendly. And we have a huge fan base throughout the world."

PENTATHLON OLYMPIC MODERN PENTATHLON They call it the 'Modern Pentathlon' to distinguish it from the one which, for some 900 years, was a feature of the ancient Olympic Games and consisted of four athletic events and wrestling. The word 'pentathlon' comes from Greek, 'penta' meaning five and 'athlon' equals contest. This is a most demanding sport. An athlete has to be good to very good at target shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running in order to succeed. Today's modern pentathlon entered the Olympic program in 1912, largely as the initiative of Pierre de Coubertin, who saw this sport as the supreme test of versatility and felt it was an ideal sport for army officers. The concept behind the competition is that a military courier sets out on horseback to carry a message. Along the way, he has to fight a duel with epees, use his pistol, swim across a river, and then run through the woods to reach his goal. And so it was: the sport gained quick acceptance especially in Sweden and Finland and for the first 30 years or so, only military personnel took part.
