There were also B-body Monacos in '77-'78 (rebadged Coronets). (The Eagle Premier-based Monaco in the early '90s was a completely different car. When the Monaco was first introduced in 1965, it was only offered as a 2 door hardtop in the US (Canada had Monaco convertibles as well, but these were never offered in the US). It appears to have been conceived as a specialty hardtop along the lines of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Olds Starfire. This solo offering was the top of the Dodge line in '65; other C-body Dodges following included the Custom 880, Polara 500, and Polara. The Monaco was most readily distinguished from lesser C-body Dodges by its unique taillight treatment, a tradition that continued as long as there were C-body Monacos. The Custom 880 was dropped in '66 and the Monaco line expanded to offer most of the former Custom 880 body styles (all except the convertible and 6-window four door sedan). A Monaco 500 two door hardtop was introduced to take the place of the original Monaco at this time, accompanied again by a Canada-only Monaco 500 convertible.

Search The once-independent American Motors Corporation (AMC), struggling to create a market identity after the demise of their Nash and Rambler labels, came up with small but very heavy cars with available 4WD (Eagle), forerunners of the late-80s bubble-style little cars (Pacer), and fast, furious experimental cars with high-performance engines (AMX). But it was all to no avail, and Renault ended up buying AMC, partly to sell their own cars in the American market. Their attempt failed, and Chrysler, under "buy and sell" Iaccoca, bought AMC. This move, though widely regarded as stupid at the time (probably by the same analysts who loved the Daimler-Chrysler merger), gave Chrysler one of its two biggest moneymakers: Jeep. When Chrysler bought AMC, it agreed to sell a certain number of Renaults. (Iaccoca also reportedly promised not to end the AMC name, which he did shortly after the sale went through. Instead of AMC, he chose the name Eagle for the division, after the 4,000 pound 4WD-capable, bulging-tired, oddly-styled AMC which can still be found in snowy and hilly areas. The Eagle's sister, the AMC Concord, eventually found a namesake in a Chrysler LH car). The Premier itself was not totally discontinued; its design was adapted into the LH.

The first sedentary inhabitants of the region, the Ligures, are described as a mountain people, accustomed to hard work and an exemplary frugality. The coast and the port of Monaco were probably the sea access for the interior Ligurian population, the Oratelli of Peille. The origin of the name "Monaco" has been subject to several hypotheses. For some, the name comes from the Ligurian tribe, the Monoïkos, who inhabited the Rock in the 6th century B.C. For others, the origin comes from the Greek. In antiquity, the port of Monaco was associated with the cult of the hero Herakles (Hercules for the Romans), and his name was often linked to the expression "Herakles Monoïkos," which means Herakles alone. This version seems to bear out, as the modern name for Monaco's main port is the Port of Hercules. At the end of the 12th century B.C., the Romans occupied the region. Monaco is part of the Province of the Maritime Alps. During their occupation, the Romans erected at La Turbie, the Trophy of Augustus, which celebrates the triumph of their military campaigns. During this same period, Phoenecian and Carthaginian sailors brought prosperity to the region. After the fall of the Roman Empire (5th century A.D.), the region was regularly sacked by different barbarian populations. It was only at the end of the X century, after the expulsion of the Sarrasins by the Count of Provence, that the coast slowly became repopulated.

The area which is now Monaco has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Legend has it that during the Roman era a young Corsican Christian named Dévote was executed and her body placed in a boat for Africa. The boat drifted off course and ran aground on the coast of modern-day Monaco, where a state was founded in her honour. The first serious spate of building in the area - the perimeters of today's Princes Palace - was undertaken by the Ligurians, a Ghibelline Genovese dynasty which ruled Monaco in the 13th century. In 1489 King Charles VIII of France recognized Monaco's independence. This Machiavellian approach - indeed, Machiavelli himself was in Monaco in the early 16th century to sign a treaty on behalf of Florence - paid dividends in 1612 when Honoré II was granted the title of prince by the French crown. He signed a treaty of friendship with France, and the principality remained independent from that time on, despite a brief interruption during the French Revolution.
