Political State Report: Straight From The Trenches Local politicians may use this data to push for alternative schools at all elementaryand secondary levels, which they believe will radically cut down on http://www.polstate.com/archives/001157.html
Extractions: VA: 1 in 2 Richmond Student Suspended Last Year The 25,000 student Richmond school system handed out 12,231 suspensions last year. Local politicians may use this data to push for alternative schools at all elementary and secondary levels, which they believe will radically cut down on suspensions. Alternative schools have worked in other places, but I have my doubts about their effectiveness as a complete strategy. I'm going to roughly estimate that the average suspended student is suspended 3 times a year. This gives you 4,000 individual students suspended last year. You're going to move 1 in 6 children to an alternative school? On what criteria will these students be judged to decide whether they move into the alternative school? Will the program be voluntary or mandatory? This could turn into a horror issue if an alternative school program is expanded beyond truly troubled kids to include random malcontents and act-ups. by scott wrightson Comments Trackback

Extractions: HELENA - Thousands of students at 26 schools throughout Montana will put their best foot forward on Oct. 2 by walking to class in support of active, healthy lifestyles and safe, "walkable" communities. These schools received a total of more than $11,000 in grant money to support the annual Walk to School Day promotion, which typically includes safety-oriented handouts for students, guest speakers and safety demonstrations. The international event is in its fourth year in Montana and has grown vastly each year; this is the first year the event has been celebrated statewide. An estimated 1,000 Helena students and parents participated at six schools last year, including Gov. Judy Martz. The Governor will again walk this year with students, to Smith School in Helena. "Walk to School Day reinforces so many important social elements that children will need to succeed in life, like the importance of education, physical fitness and being safety conscious," Martz said. "And I can't think of a more enjoyable way to get to know our state's children and parents than by walking with them to school."

Extractions: When people first began calling Montana the "Treasure State" in 1895, they were paying tribute to our mineral wealth-the gold, silver, and copper that helped to build our cities. Sign up to receive our eMail newsletter But the nickname is just as apt when applied to our energy resources. Because as the nation's energy needs have evolved over the past two centuries, Montana has consistently been able to meet them with her abundance of natural riches. We've had timber to stoke our steamboats, coal to run our railroads, hydropower to light our homes, and oil and gas to warm them. Now, as the nation seeks new alternatives to conventional energy sources, Montana is once again poised to play a valuable role. Wind is the most promising of the existing energy alternatives. It's the world's fastest-growing source of energy. It's the most economically viable source of alternative energy. It's increasingly cost-competitive and, unlike coal or nuclear power, it can be sold as a value-added product. Most importantly, it's renewable and environmentally friendly. And, as any resident can tell you, wind is plentiful in parts of Montana. In fact, during the infamous Hard Winter of 1886 and '87, the wind was so strong, according to one wag, that the cattle had to tie their tails to their hind legs to keep them from blowing away. More recently-and using a more scientific approach-the American Wind Energy Association determined that Montana ranks fifth among the 50 states for its wind energy potential.
