5-0 out of 5 stars Macroeconomics for the Real World
In this short work, Stephen Horwitz plants macroeconomics -- economics of whole economies, including their changes -- firmly in Austrian microeconomics - economics at the level of individuals and firms. He grafts Austrian trade cycle theory -- its explanation of business cycles -- onto monetary disequilibrium theory, that peculiarly non-Austrian theory of shifts in money championed by Leland Yeager, Axel Liejonhufvud, and Robert Greenfield.

Horwitz analyzes inflation and also deflation, focuses on how changes in money affect capital at a macroeconomic level. He illustrates how fractional reserve free banking fits into macroeconomics - mainly by showing how laissez faire in banking would avoid many of the pitfalls of regulated or central banking.

Horwitz's summary and appraisal of William H. Hutt's work on price rigidities is another reason to recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for first timers to Macroeconomics
This was the course text for my class at NYU and the book did not dissapoint. All the key concepts were well described and I managed to read the text quite easily even though it was my introduction to Macroeconomics.

The questions at the end of the chapters are good enough to keep your brain active. I can't complain.

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatBook - Samuelson and Nordhaus Are Awesome
This is a classic Macro text used for many Intro to Macro-Econ.

I used a similiar text (many editions before) when I took my first econ class in college over 10 yrs ago.

This is a great book, easy to understand and fluid reading.

Thumbs Up!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars great book for starters in economic theory ,esp for students
It's a great book for first year business studentsand all those who want to learn something about basic principles of macroeconomics and the influence it has on everyday business activities

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to macroeconomic theory
In comparison with other macroeconomic texts around it should get 5 stars. It starts with a historical perspective of the crisis in economics at thetime of Keynes, setting the picture for why anyone bothered to inventmacroeconomics in the first place. It then rapidly proceeds to introduce the major schools of macroeconomics and to develop the relevant ideas andmodels. It is an ideal introduction for the interested or serious studentand manages to be exciting as well as fairly comprehensive. If you'retaking an introductory macroeconomics course, get this book instead of yourtext. If you're coming from outside the economics profession and have amind of your own, this ones for you. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Wow
If your econ teacher uses this book, take a class that uses a different one, it makes all the difference!

1-0 out of 5 stars TOXIC TEXTBOOK- If I could have given zero stars I would have.
This is required reading for my BA Eco program, and in my opinion there is no greater crime than mandating such pure trash. This text isn't just wrong, as in it's micro theory is fallaciously presented, it's also not a real textbook. Every lesson is steeped in ideological rhetoric and political bias. The terms are presented, analysis follows, and then a conclusion supporting free-market fundamentalism is posited. This is NOT an academic treatment of the theory or practice of microeconomics. It could best be described as illogical fiction and propaganda.

Pure ideological brow-beatings through blatant fallacies, missing data citations, hyperbolic uses of rhetoric, and frequent "applications" that lack both context and validity, are the true merits here. If you must read this book, please let your own thinking cap be the helmet that saves you from Perloff's brainwashing tirade of toxic misinformation.

For those looking for more useful micro related resources search for agent based modeling, neural networks, complexity economics, behavioral eco, orany of the other realistic approaches towards "micro" based economics. Please don't accept this as book as either authoritative or instructional, it's trash.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Micro Book EVER
I used to like Econ before this book. This book is confusing, hard to follow, and torturous to read. While reading it, I find myself taking a well-deserved nap every 15 minutes. It seems like the author deliberately tries to explain things in the most confusing and driest way possible. Also, there are too many equations throughout - many of which hurt your brain in the way they are explained. This is the first time I've written an online review of any sort, but I felt like I had to perform a public service and let you know before you buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nearly impossible to follow
This is my first review on Amazon ever, I feel so adamantly about the horrible quality of this book that I needed to share.
The author does an extremely poor job of introducing concepts and making them easy to understand. Problems are CONSTANTLY laid out in a manner where leaps are made between steps without explanation.
The "myeconlab" supplement is supposed to walk through solutions from the book but instead only offers multiple choice "quizzes" that are much different.
Of course many of you will not have a choice in the matter if it is required for the course but what a P.O.S.....worst way to spend $200.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I feel this product does a good job explaining intermediate microeconomics. Perloff has a good mixture of concepts and math with some good examples as well. The book also arived in a timely fassion witch pleased me as well. If your interested in economics at all you should buy this book. ... Read more

Product Description
This book provides an analysis of the endogenous mechanisms that govern the dynamic processes in capitalist economies. A nonlinear IS-LM version of a macromodel is developed in which 'real' and 'financial' feed-back mechanisms lead to income distribution-employment dynamics along with fluctuations in aggregate demand and the capacity utilisation rate. Emphasis is placed on the relevance of demand constraints in firms' pricing strategies, within the context of imperfectly competitive markets, and its implications for the dynamics of income distribution in the cyclical process. The 'financial' mechanisms appear in terms of the effects of the endogenous liquidity creation process on the dynamics of firms' indebtedness. The stress is on the two-fold nature of "finance": it supports the accumulation process and enhances growth, and yet it can lead to financial fragility and act as a source of systemic instability. ... Product Description
In recent years, innovative texts in mathematics, science, foreign languages, and other fields have achieved dramatic pedagogical gains by abandoning the traditional encyclopedic approach in favor of attempting to teach a short list of core principles in depth. Two well-respected writers and researchers, Bob Frank and Ben Bernanke, have shown that the less-is-more approach affords similar gains in introductory economics.Although a few other texts have paid lip service to this new approach, Frank/Bernanke is by far the best throughout, and the best executed principles text in this mold. Avoiding excessive reliance on formal mathematical derivations, it presents concepts intuitively through examples drawn from familiar contexts. The authors introduce a coherentshort list of core principles and reinforce them by illustrating and applying each in numerous contexts.Students are periodically asked to apply these principles and to answer related questions and exercises.

Frank/Bernanke also encourages students to become “Economic Naturalists,” by employing basic economic principles to understand and explain what they observe in the world around them.An economic naturalist understands, for example, that infant safety seats are required in cars but not in airplanes because the marginal cost of space to accommodate these seats is typically zero in cars but often hundreds of dollars in airplanes. Such examples engage student interest while teaching them to see each feature of their economic landscape as the reflection of an implicit or explicit cost-benefit calculation. ... Read more

Product Description
Many economists view competition among central banks as leading to an over-issue of money. This book challenges the conventional wisdom by showing that competition among Federal Reserve banks in the 1920s did not result in an over-issue problem. The US Congress imposed a more monopolistic structure on the Fed in the mid-1930s so that it could accomodate an increase in the revenue needs of the Treasury. This book is unique in emphasizing the evolution of the Fed's structure from a highly competitive one to a highly monopolistic one. ... Read more

Microeconomics offers a novel approach to the principles of economics course based on three pedagogical principles:

  • Ongoing assessment is an essential component of the learning process;

Quality assessment permeates every component of Microeconomics, the first textbook to offer a class-tested test bank. MyEconLab’s innovative online homework and tutorial system, with its innovative computer-grade graphing exercises, is tightly linked to the text.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT a book, it's hole punched pages you put in a binder!!
This is no book. It is hole punched pages you put into a binder. You cannot resell it! Which sucks for any university student wanting their money back. It is also the wrong version used in my university. I couldn't log onto MyEconLab because our edition is the 7th, while the one I bought was the 9th. Make 100% sure you have the right textbook if you'll be doing assignments online!

2-0 out of 5 stars Item 'front page' on amazon site misleading
Be sure to read the entire description of this item.It says softcover, (and was shipped to my son with a receipt marked 'hardcover')but it's a NO COVER 3 hole punched copy of the book.Due to that my son doesn't feel that he'll be able to sell this book for hardly anything once he is done with it; and he can't send it back for refund because he needs it NOW. The shipping took quite a while (maybe someone had to xerox the book after we ordered it!), he was behind the 8 ball already when it arrived.

1-0 out of 5 stars I didnt receive the book

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible book. Buy McConnell Brue
The Parkin book is dumb down but so much so that you dont understand Microeconomics the way you'll need to if you plan on taking advanced theory, money and banking, etc.

I prefer McConnell Brue who has been the staple and bible of Microeconomics for years!

Smart universities choose McConnell Brue and dumb ones like Micro econ at Rice seem to choose Parkin.

5-0 out of 5 stars First-time micro students NEED an understandable text!
I have used Parkin as an auxilliary source for my micro 102 classes for years. His examples are products that can be related to by 19-year-olds, AND he does not use wheat or other perfectly competitive products toexemplify a downward sloping demand curve! Many other do, which causesgreat confusion among the students. What is wrong with careful, thoughtful, comprehensive explanations of concepts that are difficult for first timemicro students? He covers several complicated topics that are left out ofthe more highly rated texts by Mankiw and others.I am wondering if we areeven rating the same book...I give it the maximum rating! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars not a well writen book
The authors don't know how to explain the theories in a easier way, on the contrary, they try to confuse you as much as they can. They also have all sorts of stupid examples which have nothing to do with reality. They are theorists, not good writers!

There are also many mistakes in the book. not too professional.

If your university requires this book, you do not have a chooose, but it is not a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Macroeconomics by Case/Fair
The authors provide an understandable presentation of the dynamics of demand/supply, the price structure, equilibrium and concepts of elasticity. The data employed is current & this version is supported by the publisher in various prior versions , as well as, this successive version. The work has considerable technological support in the form of the CD Rom and various instructional materials. The authors provide a useful "News Analysis" to integrate current events into the text. This is very useful in providing background information for students. The problem sets are topical and challenging. There is a considerable discussion of international economics and transitional economies. Overall, the text can satisfy a wide range of student interests. i.e. Those students having a quantitative orientation will appreciate the considerable graphs throughout the text. Students having a more visual learning experience will enjoy the various news items throughout the text & the extensive discussion of basic definitions. The chapter summaries and WEB exercises are helpful in integrating the material & applying the various concepts using current technologies. This text should be employed for intensive renditions of introductory economics at the collegiate level. There is an appropriate amount of microeconomic coverage in the Principles of Macroeconomics, as well as, the more comprehensive Principles of Economics work. After having read this book, students should have a firm grasp of economics and the various data employed by industry. In addition, students will become more knowledgable on current events applicable to studies in this field. This work would provide very helpful background for further studies in Price Analysis and Econometrics (Mathematical Economics). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good text from a teacher's point of view
I liked this text and might adopt it for my classes. Economics is not an easy subject but Prof. McEachern's text is clearly written. The end of chapter summary of key ideas help to clarify what the chapter was about. The problems and exercises are rigorous, but within reach of anyone who has had algebra.

The case studies bring a real world aspect to the material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!
This book is terrible. The author is for one thing extremely dull. Worst though is the questions he expects you to answer at the end of most chapters. The examples he gives while reading the chapter are totally different from the questions he asks at the end of the chapters. As a result of this you are left asking yourself, when the hell did we do this?????? To make matters worse their is no answer key to any of this, so even if you attempt to answer the questions, you will never even know if you did them right or not! Stay away from this book if possible, take a teacher who uses another book, because this book is very poor. In my class, probably half dropped because of this!

5-0 out of 5 stars compelling easy-to-understand book

In Foundations of Microeconomics, Robin Bade and Michael Parkin provide a serious, yet accessible economics course that is focused on helping students understand the basic principles of economics, connecting these principles to today's economic issues, and developing a lasting interest in economics as a relevant part of their own lives.Foundations of Microeconomics features a tightly constructed pedagogical approach that never wavers from its goal--to give students an in-depth understanding of important economic principles in a way that is clear, concise, and concerned every step of the way with engaging students' interest and understanding. This text is shorter than most and focused on key concepts--but not watered down. The glue that holds together the chapters and the entire teaching/learning package is the "Checkpoint" feature. Bade and Parkin know that the best time to review material is when it's fresh in students' minds. "Checkpoints" reinforce the key points of the chapter by amplifying concepts with a full page of practice problems and solutions that immediately reinforce the learning objectives and strengthen students' understanding of the material.Efoundations, the text's Web site, free with the purchase of any new copy of the book, includes a complete eText, integrated links to the eStudy Guide, Foundations Interactive, Economics in the News, and a full range of Web resources including self assessment quizzes with links back to the eText. ...
